Can anyone enlighten me on the viability of RISC in a desktop environment? As I understand it the reason ARM is so successful in the mobile space is because it requires very little power compared to intel/AMD chips; why can this technology not work on desktop computers?
Because DOS/Windows apps are compiled to run on Intel. Intel has had the slower processors from their inception (Motorola 68k CPUs were almost always faster) until around 2002, however they never had to sweat because nobody wants to change their software even if Intel processors were half as powerful.
I used RISC-based desktop Macs until IBM/Motorola stopped competing in that market. IBM focused on server and console processors while Motorola focused on embedded systems.
anyway the vids crap arm cpu's were developed by the people who developed the bbc model b using 6502 8 bit (probably the earliest risc based chip) processor and met up with the guys who developed it and took to what it is today. intel are cisc based but basically risc with lots of microcode (silicon) to do more complex instructions.
@Amrut223 servers are exactly the place where they will score. They would probably have more trouble competing on the desktop. The idea is that a lot of server workloads could be served well by using a machine with many "medium performance" processors rather than a few "high performance" ones.
One of the limits that people come up against is the amount of power that server rooms need so ARMs power efficiency makes it much easier to install big servers. I've had this problem - its no joke.
@Geoxile Lol, maybe in mobile and smarthpone are ARM good, but in computers and notebook are doubfully best Intel, so some poor ARM cant chance to be in computers, only in mobile phones.
@itaiddddd Intel is only one good cpu manufacter in world, any others suck, look at AMD best their CPU have same performance like medium i5 what is intel mid range
This buisness style home movie does not work, stick with the product, how it pleases your target audience, future steps, what the product does, support information.. This is what shows that you know the market, not a bunch of guys talking on and on about stuff that the target audience does not care about.. save it for the board room and get in touch with your customers ;)
This video is a waste of my time. A bunch of marketing spam. My bet is that these CPU's not going to be cheap initially ( ie cell phone price ). Look forward to some real technical information. ARM is acting more like INTEL... marketing .. marketing.. marketing
us brits are very good at engineering...Im very good in a 3d way of thought...I don't use phrases or old terms..im fresh, infact I laugh at more or less every product ive seen so far..I just suffer from asperger's syndrome, so ignore me....I am advancement!

ARM is great for smartphones and such. But the fact they think they will compete with x86 in the high end and server world... Not going to happen.

Amazing. ARM is progressing so quickly. And then when Graphene becomes a mainstream material in manufacturing? Imagine! What will happen to x86...

@TheQARK, yeah sure keep your intel inside heat up , while my battery will keep going on the A15
the intel could be nice for boiling eggs, but still to expensive for this task
