I take this is being played on the original hardware and not emulated? It's great to hear the General Instrument AY-3-8912 in action, while not as good as the SID chip the 128K Speccy did produce some good tunes. Glider Rider being one of my favourites (crap game though).
I loaded this tune as MP3 file onto an iPod shuffle (2GB) and playback broke down after a few seconds of really weird sound (even after reformatting and reloading the playlists). Other "regular" music played well as usual.
BTW: The "AY-sound" song plays perfectly as MP3 file loaded onto an iPhone.
As a (standalone-)synth it would be pretty boring, afterall it's just 4 square channels clocked at 3.5MHz. If you have the earlier Version (rubber or 48+) you can pretty much forget about that, as it uses the same kind of beeper your pc does.
This may be unbelievably late, but with an old ZX you can still use the BEEP function to get one channel of sound, and with crafty programming you can play more that one sound at a time. Best, however, to use it as a secondary instrument - that is, an accompaniment to another instrument.
Awesome! But there's something else helping the AY.... Digitized samples? Help of the 48K beeper? One of the russian soundcards? I'll try to find out. :D
I do it.

Better leave it as it is and start tracking :)
