I'm starting to give Mayer his due. Yes, not funkier than the original. Try to play any song in the history of funky with and without a Hammond G4 organ with a leslie speaker. Yep, the Hammond is the funkiest friggin' instrument ever made. The percussion in this rendition has to be minimal, because the Ziggabo Modeleste drums from the Meters version would overwhelm the accompaniment in this version so hard that you'd just sit there missing the organ. Anyway, pretty damn good.
Who said this was a funk contest? All art is interpretation. If you can simply dismiss this performance and see no redeeming value in it, you don't know music. If on the other hand you happen to prefer the Meters, that's your prerogative. But you don't balls tangled in your Y fronts. Simple truth is I've heard the Meters treat this song several different ways. Are they deserving of the same criticism for not being true to the original?

Hey poostudent: Steve Jordan is badass, but how could you even suggest that this was funkier than Zigaboo, Porter, Nocentelli and Neville!!?? I mean, come on man! And why does Mayer choose to play the one tune by The Meters that everybody wants to play, the obvious one, couldn't he dig a little deeper?! When he stops the hollywood bullshit and the totally insipid pop music he insists on selling, then maybe that day he'll have enough genuine funk and soul in him to earn the respect of the real blues and funk musicians and audience. Selling out damages the resources that self expression draw upon, resulting in lesser music. I don't care if others disagree it's true.

C'mon man. Close your eyes and act like you didn't read that it was John Mayer puttin' this down. Tell me you would still say it's not funkier. Sometimes I wish(hypothetically) that all music lovers were blind so there'd be no way to judge a tune 'cause of who's playing it. 'Cause in all honesty this is groovy as hell; and JM's tone and playing combined add a nice kick it to the classic. We should respect him rather than rip him for playing this song. Obviously he's got good taste.
