good on you i wouldnt have given him a ride i would have in fact not even given him cigs as he may now come back as he got a pack from you i would have given him a cig and sent him on his way telling him you best go as my brother is funny about strangers in his yard and he is a boxer so i would move if i was you thats what i would have said lol to encourage him to stay away rob is just to nice bless him regards dee uk xxx
If the situation seemed desperate like freezing weather and a sick baby in tow I'd call and pay a cab. But more than likely I'd say you got feet use them. Very first rule kids learn is don't take rides from strangers, so I question anyone asking
I did have money that I could have given that man the second time he came to our door. Since his story was transparently a scam, I lied and told him that I had no money to give. When he was desperate enough for cans, I gave in just to get rid of him. Your theory that he wanted drug money probably comes from when you heard me telling the story to other people and giving my theory that he wanted $ for drugs. I don't think I took any actions that were particularly unsafe those times.
Correction: A man came to our front door at night with a sob story. He needed anti-fever medicine for his child. He said an exact dollar amount and mentioned the pharmacy at the hospital, concrete details to bolster his story. I gave him some cash, although I suspected it was a scam. Second time he knocked was a day or two later, telling the same story word for word. I said I had no money to give. He asked if he could have our empty pop cans to get a refund. I gave him the cans. The end.
I got sort of a bad feeling about the way he first asked for a cigarette, then asked for a ride. Wouldn't most average ppl just ask for a ride? It seemed like a foot-in-the-door technique by the kind of person who was thinking about it a lot, an experienced salesman or beggar or thief. So I was relieved that Melinda gave me sort of an excuse to get out of it. Oh well.
That was hilarious, Mel. I don't know if I'd give that person a ride but I have given rides to bands of merry travelers and it was cool. But I have also passed up on giving people a ride if they looked a little shady or crazy eyed. And I really laughed when you asked if Jesus would ever come as a meth addict. I guess so, since every one of us has "God in you". That's something else, seeing God in everyone, even when they don't know their own source.
You were not being a bitch or paranoid. Unfortunately in our society today we all must be cautious and on our guard when it comes to dealing with strangers. When asked for a cigarette I would have replied, "sorry I don't smoke," even if I did. As for the ride, no way. If I had the money I would offer to call a cab and give the driver payment for the ride. If not I again would apologize that I could not help and go inside and lock my door. If he continued to loiter outside my home i'd call police
I made the worst mistake of my life giving someone a ride once. He was at a gas station with a gas can & told me his car was up a few miles on the highway & would I give him a ride. I did. (I still get upset thinking about this) We got a few miles & I ask "where's your car" & he looked me dead in my face & said "there is no car". I immediately started crying & begging him not to hurt me & that I had 2 small children & I am a single mother. He seemed to consider this as he stared at me. (cont)
@sheri226 I started thinking about crashing my car into a sign on the highway when finally said "Pull into the next McDonalds." There was a McDonalds the next exit. I pulled into the parking lot & he asked for a cigarette. I gave him the pack. He opened the door & looked back DEAD IN MY EYES & said "Do yourself & your children a favor, never pick up strangers" & got out of my car. I shook & cried hysterically all the way home. I get upset to this day thinking about it & it was over 10 years ago.
@sheri226 I'm so glad you didn't let Rob give him a ride. A gun or a knife is a hell of an equalizer, no matter how big Rob is. Jesus.. I need to take a half a Xanax now.. I'm shaking again just remembering this shit. It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. He seemed so kind at the gas station compared to the blank stare he gave me after he told me "there is no car." It's as if there was NOTHING behind those blue eyes.. just nothing. I gotta go, I'm terribly upset now.
You may miss out on something (experience, a sense of generosity, a new friend, a hidden opportunity, etc) by NOT going a ride, but you could possibly lose your life these days for being a good Samaritan. I will keep my life over any sense of good heartedness....can always donate time or money when I feel that I'm lacking in my humanity. Stay safe Mel!
There are scams being reported on the local news all the time.
A couple weeks ago, aWhiteTruck unexpectedly pulled into ourYard (we're on a rural back road). At first myHusband thought it was our son's friend who works4aCableCompany. The guy came running toward our steps as myHusband was walking out. The guy wanted2know if we wanted2buy someOmahaSteaks for $3 each. MyHusband was going2buy a couple, but was told he had2buy a CASE at $3 per steak! He quickly changed his mind+said no.
There are a lot of scams (or worse) out there. Druggies do some weird things when they need a fix. They don't have a problem killing someone for a couple dollars. I highly doubt we would have given a stranger a ride upon being approached as you and Rob were. I think it's best to err on the side of caution. We probably would have offered to call the police to see if they'd give the stranger a ride.
Hello Melinda, I would have said.."I will be happy to call the police and I am sure they would give you are ride for this emergency"..you did the right thing...now you will live another day to do more vlogs...regards...
No. You never can tell what people will do. I just learned of a friend, before Christmas, who was murdered. He invited a friend into his home who brought her boyfriend. My friend was murdered after trying to defend the girl from an assault by the boyfriend. He was hit with a metal stick and stabbed to death. It's best to err on the side of caution in all matters regarding strangers. Funny that you mention meth, the murderer and his girlfriend were meth addicts.
i always give someone a ride if i have them outnumbered 2 to1. that seems safe enough to me - but i live in a country with no guns so that does make it a different proposition. if i'm on my own and i get a bad vibe from the person i leave them be.
no. three reasons: he fight with his father (emotional problems?), asking cigarettes and a ride with total stranger. sounds strange. sounds that he doesnt understand the limits of other people bounderies.
I would have given him a ride but only to lure him in the car. Then I would have mugged him and pushed him outta the car in a really wealthy part of town laughing like a crazy man the whole time. Then I would have driven around the block and slowly pulled up to him and nonchalantly asked if I could give him a ride somewhere. Before he could say anything I would hit the gas and burn rubber down the street, again laughing like a madman. CONT>>
@owheydusoapsk <<Cont At the end of the street I would stop the car, get out, and moon him. Then I would pick up a big bucket of KFC to take home for supper and spend the rest of the night making love to my wife. Laughing like a madman the whole time.
No. I have kind of a shitty view on it. If you've gotten to a point where you don't have any family or friends to help you, then you've got a problem...and it's not mine. I blew out a tire once on the interstate (during a time I didn't have a cell phone) and the spare was flat. A really weird guy pulled over and I took his ride. I appreciate that he offered and drove me into town, but I'd still rather not accept rides from strangers, especially strange strangers.
i always listen to my gut on this kinda thing. if i felt it was not a good idea i wouldnt do it. i have stopped for some people for others i wouldnt even consider. i will hand anyone a buck that needs it but a ride is a confined situation in which you may not be able to get out. ...even a 6 ft 2 man is no match against an insane killer....regardless, also cold medicine is a drug and used to trip on by some folks. no you arent a bitch, just cautious. i doubt jesus would appear as a meth addict.
I just thought she was dumb and was a little frightened for her. It was actually really hard for me to not stop because I knew she would be safe if I gave her a ride, but I didnt know if I would be safe if I picked her up. It kinda sucks that we have to be so guarded, but you just never know.
(cont) When I told her no, she said I can give you money, which made me suspect that she was up to no good. I was thinkin, if you can give me money then you can call a cab and if you dont have enough ask the church for money. These days imo its never a good idea to let a complete stranger into your car. I actually saw a girl hitchhiking the other day (I seriously havent seen that in yeeearrrs) and there was no way I would pick her up.
First, no I would not have given him a ride. I may have given him some money IF I had it handy to give (meaning I would not have opened my wallet in front of him) and told him sorry.
When I went to church I had a girl ask me at like 930 at night for a ride to a really bad area (that was in the opposite direction of where i lived) and I told her no and directed her to the pastors that could give her $ from the benevolent fund. (cont)
That's not being paranoid, that's just being cautious. You can give money, cigarettes, whatever, but allowing a stranger in your car is never a good idea. I've given strangers rides before, but I was alone. The choice was mine. I was not making the choice, and perhaps compromising the safety, of others.
That is what bums do. They ask and if you keep saying yes they will keep asking for more. Can you give me a smoke? Can you give me a ride? Can you give me money? Can you give me any more money. Oh and don't forget the fake "God bless you remark" that they like to give at the end. Say no once and be rid of him.

strangers in the night exchanging glances
Wondering in the night what were the chances
We'd be sharing love before the night was through
Something in your eyes was so inviting
Something in you smile was so exciting...
