i see this dood has really good martial arts skills in his wheelchair, but all that other guy has to do is come up behind him and tip him back and he's screwed. any ideas wot u do then?
yeah that sounds like a pretty good idea, but jus recently i found a way to get back up off the ground (: it probly wont work with everyone but how i do it is i put my brakes on and use one hand to push me up off the ground and the other one to keep the backrest against my back and then lean forward.......but if the person tryna bash u kicks ur elbow wen ur tryna push urself up then ur totally stuffed, but hey at least its actually possible to get urself up without any help at all.
Excellent video! I use a wheelchair myself and study Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. I was not aware that there is a disability martial arts association. I also did not realise that Black Belt International has a disability martial arts area. How can I learn more about this?
Read chansau comments around youtube hes a class c poomsae ref one of a few in the country, but from his comments it shows hes a class c fixer he thinks we are idiots read his coomments on koryo vs koryo as he say the only one who can win under the old or new rules is the girl, its is job as a ref to stand by the Rules weather hes there or not the video is visual evidence. as they name names it was a Kathy Barwell event sanctioned by the BTCB [WTF]watch out for the same in karate its also itf
I am in a wheelchair and I am a first degree black belt in shaolin kempo chi sao karate. I was the first student in a chair the dojo had ever had, so my sensei's had to learn along w/ me how to convert techniques. I went on to instruct classes and proctor tests. I am glad to know there are more people out there that are helping those w/ disabilities learn self defense and proving that being in a wheelchair does not always have to limit your capabilities in life.
fantastic video. i heard of your skills through my friend richard burford who i believe is becoming an ambassodor for the disability martial arts association. i admire your work throughly and wish you every success for the future. you are amazing and i hope you continue to show people that anything is possible whether they are disabled or not from kyrie baldwin xxx
Thank you very much we could not show all what I can do in the time we had. I have been perfecting and mastering wheelchair self-defence for 11 years. I am fully approved wheelchair instructor I am also the Disability Martial Arts Executive Officer for Black Belt International.
It's about speed and strategy, I myself am in a wheelchair, and I'm also into martial arts. It's possible to take on an "able bodied" person, difficult but with enough training quite possible. though the "sword" demonstration was SERIOUSLY lacking in form and show of technique, that as well is possible but much more dangerous.
I'm sorry to be the odd one out. I honestly do treat everyone equally but... i don't reckon a person in a wheelchair could defend themselves against an average person who was trying to harm them. they are to much at a disadvantage. Unless you did some serious damage to them you are more then likely going to annoy them...that or they get shocked rate you for trying and leave. No harm in practice tho. Admirable dedication!
Due to the very fact that the attacker's expectations of a physical response from a wheelchair user is low, it is possible to take the attacker off guard by an explosive counter attack. Self-defense is not about determining who is the better or stronger fighter. It is about using strategy and tactics to deceive and distroy the will of your attacker.
I realise that I would probably have a disadvantage when trying to protect myself. On the other hand, many attackers (in real life) don't know martial arts. Many would be surprised that a person in a wheelchair DOES. Self defense is NOT about destroying your enemy. It is about doing whatever you need to do survive. I know that I would likely be hurt if I were attacked. And yet, knowing how to protect myself might keep me from being killed or hurt worse. That's what is important.
Martial arts teaches: awareness of self and body, awareness of environment, flexability, breathing, how to respond without panicking, how to defend onesself, grip releases, awareness of strengths and weaknesses (not just your own) and many other useful things. Its NOT just openning up a can of whopass on everything that moves. In that way, I think studying martial arts can benefit almost everyone. Don't discount people based on perceived ability.
I am in a wheelchair, and I am going to start Karate Shotokan in a wheelchair next week. I'm going to be one of the first person to do Karate in a wheelchair in the province of Quebec.

Bravo!
I saw a guy in a wheelchair defend himself in a pub once and he handled a couple of thugs very expertly, mind you he was once a judo champion!
This guy in the video demonstrates that having such a disability does not mean you can't also defend yourself so well done to him.
Osu!
