That happend to me when I flew on a Southwest Boeing 737-700 from Columbus (CMH) to Chicago-Midway in 2005 we bounced twice before the Pilot activated the Thrust Reversers while the nose gear was still off the Ground but we landed safely. Must have been the head winds that day
I have thousands of hours in the DC9 fleet including that same plane when it was operated by NC/RC and NW. What happened, the AGS, Auto Ground Spoilers did not deploy for whatever reason, wet runway, system problem or not armed. They are normally activated by main gear wheel spin up. The AGS are used to kill lift of the wing upon on touch down. The -50 skipped, not bounce.
She floated there for a while, she didn't have a lot of room to slow down. The parking structure is right by the end of the runway which is where (Cessna154) filmed off of, which means if he pointed his camera off to the left just a little bit more, the runway ends right there. DC-9's stop fast never underestimate them.
I've once experienced a very hard landing before during heavy rains on final approach, we're flying on a Q400 and it felt like the last day of my life...
@YagoRj357 It look's like he came in a bit hot...It didn't look like any crosswind. But the passengers most likely wouldn't of noticed much. It just wasn't that unusual of a landing.
Hmmm- Not too bad a landing. Perhaps the pilot was just a bit late deploying the speed brakes to destroy the airflow over the wings - but he had it all under control by the half way marker. .
Some of you question this pilot's skills. Whether it was external factors or the pilot wasn't at his or her best it still landed safely and the passengers were on their merry way.
The pilot had to get the plane on the ground, because of the ground effect. Maybe strong headwind, fast approach, or a combination of the two caused the plane to lift after first touchdown. As a pilot you have to learn to be aggressive with the controls when landing, especially during strong winds
@betsiej I do too. However I hold a Private Pilot Certificate as well as a instrument rating. I am now in the process of getting my commerical. If you dont call that a pilot, then I dont know what a pilot is to you. No pun intended.
@TheDutchWings From my experience, go-arounds are made because the pilot determined the landing conditions aren't safe, whether it's strong winds or the approach is too high. Even if a 747 or A380 bounces it's absolutely necessary to get it on the ground. A go-around would out of the question.
Maybe some tail wind caused the pilot to touchdown prematurely. Then when it bounced the first time the pilot pushed the yoke, because the ground effect would keep the plane floating. The second touchdown was harder, causing the plane to bounce a little more.
god i hate dc-9's. they are the shittiest planes there are. i have to load them all the time (i work for delta in Atlanta) and they break all the time. and the damn air extensions you have to use to hook up the air. that is the only plane you need the extension for. one of the smaller planes and yet you need a damn extension so you can hook up the air. stupid plane. the need to get rid if them. they're from the damn 60's. get some new planes already lol
@AciDXRaiN27 True. The thing is the planes that are easy to maintain and cost less to operate are the ones that keep flying. And sadly because of the airlines' massive debt it wont be a while before they start to replace old planes like the DC-9.
@tukcdohman theres no way they are in debt. they made a huge profit last year. and i still think it will cost less to get new planes than it will to fix the dc-9's over and over again. i think they are just lazy lol
I know that when maintained properly aircraft can have a very long life but even the youngest of the DC-9s must be about thirty years old. How can they keep them flying for so long. Isn't there a limit? Don't you get to a point where the skin just can't take anymore pressurizations?
@IamtheBurceDickenson i believe after 25 years they are supposed to scrap the aircrafts, however the airlines take cuts and keep them flying. hence why u hear of places crashing like once every other week or so >.>
@xranger56x Airplanes can fly until they reach their cycle limits (E.G. 40,000 flights or 20,000 hours. Short hauls do more cycles than hours). If the airlines want, I think they can do some serious maitenance and make the aircraft operational for longer. In the mid 90s, most Dc-9s were probably around 60-70,000 hours, probably around 70-80K now...
@IamtheBurceDickenson Yes... It is called the cycle/hours limits. DC-9s are 60s jets though... Should last for a few more years... I think the Fokker 50s would be more likely to be retired now, rather than 20 years on, most of them can handle 100,000 cycles (but, that makes them usuable for about 20 years). Well, I guess he was trying too hard to make it a smooth landing for the passengers, which pilots tend to do even against regulation. Then like Cessna154 said pushed on the controls causing the plane to lift slightly off the runway.
Common problem, and a very high quality video Cessna, I enjoyed it.
@AaronzChannel - Hmm, I know they flew the Dallas Stars into CMH to play the Jackets along with another team in December using a 762 (N767MW) two different times under the name Swiftair with that same paint scheme. That 734 looks to be N802TJ. They may have borrowed it from MLW Air for that trip, don't know.
@ThePlaneShow Well it can teach what a pilot has to do when the plane bounces. The ground effect would have kept it floating for a few seconds, but he or she did what they had to do: get it on the ground.
@TheThomasTT I have a feeling that the pilot thought that his flare was a bit too much and pushed down on the controls just as the wheels touched, so the bounce happened.... Also, it was pretty windy so a gust of wind could have caused trouble for the pilot. It was a safe landing.... :)
@Cessna154 yes exactly! that's the technique (my IPs called it the Boeing flare) used to control the angle and momentum during the flare. you'll notice the pilot make about 3 angle changes, and "push" about a few inches from the first ground contact. You'll get that bounce especially if the spoilers are not deployed on initial wheel spin up (a la B727)
Great video...thanks for posting this, it was a pleasure to watch it.
@Cessna154 Well if he had pushed down on the controls as the wheels touched that would of prevented the bounce, not caused it. He was probably just a little fast and got a gust before he could apply forward pressure and the plane got airborne again.
@TheThomasTT there was probably a lot of head on wind that made it hard to adjust the nose of the plane. and couldnt set down the back of it, there for he bounced
@TheThomasTT there is old caricature about the dc-9 and the a320, where the where the dc-9's cockpit is filled with switches and gauges whilst in the a320 there are 2 buttons: up and down
who knows why it bounced it up upon touchdown? The reason?

that happened cause he flared too early, so he lost speed, and then had to flare even more, so he lost even more speed.. voila

@Cessna154 Agreed.

@Cessna154 Well if he had pushed down on the controls as the wheels touched that would of prevented the bounce, not caused it. He was probably just a little fast and got a gust before he could apply forward pressure and the plane got airborne again.

@Cessna154 Being a real pilot myself bounceing is natural when your flare and airspeed dont add up togethor. He probably gave his passengers a scare.
