  • Why did BT need commercials? Weren't they owned by the government back then?

  • @thatxmas No. They were one of the first, 'commodities', that the Tory government sold off. When it was government-owned, it was part of the General Post Office. The British Telecommunications Act, 1981, saw fit to introduce competition into the UK telecommunications industry allowing licenses for other operators to run telecommunications systems. BT became privatised in 1984, selling off 50% of its shares to the public, before finally selling the rest off in 1991.

  • It only seems like yesterday.

  • jenzeppelin: That's right! Just be thankful you were not born american! lol!

  • @jenzeppelin You can swap with me, I wouldn't mind being Canadian.

  • @danbo1984 Wouldn't it be great to actually swap places for a month? What would our families think if we did it without telling them first? If I had the resources to arrange a swap, I would, ha ha. I think it would be fun, and, quite an experience.

  • @jenzeppelin Hahaha! Canadians say the nicest things, they just can't help themselves!

  • @jenzeppelin not really

  • bt is a rip off but dey sure hav funny adverts lmao

  • "Pottery, very useful. Antony, people will always need plates" LMAO, i love it! Its just the type of thing my grandma would say to me :)

  • Loved the way the telecom appears at the end

  • An olgy is useful

  • also BT have to charge sooooo much money to wire up a Phone line in peoples homes also line rentel has to be soooooo expensive BT yeah more like rip of BT scaming bastards im so glad ive moved to AOL talk so much cheaper why do people have to allways out for a con for its rip of Britain as well

  • By paying for AOL Talk, paying BT Openreach for line rental anyway. But you are right, almost no-one should ever use BT for calls, at least not chargeable calls (daytime, mobiles, international etc).

  • erm, your still with bt. or do you think your cables magically change every time you change provider??

  • A lot of them can't fucking wire your telephone wires up in your house either!

  • I loved these telecom commercials where that woman calls to drive her family nuts.

  • The old commercials were very effective and clean, not today.

  • hes got an ology hes a scientest. good old maureen there a lot cant read alot of cant see if u ask me? lol

  • I Love Maureen Lipman and these ads were brilliant.

  • When they were bullis you mean? ;-)

  • Pure classic.

  • A classic advert. Maureen Lipman at her best.

  • wish i recorded TV more to see them again today. AHH the 80s .. when Dennis the Menace in the Beano STILL looked menacing with his big chin.. Now they started drawing him with a small round head and made him shorter. He looks like a 4 year old cute kid not a menace lol

  • man this brings back memories.. Remember the "inner city" ad when 081 and 071 came about? hehe.. anyone has a link for that one? Hum.. she misunderstands when he says "sociology" this today would be bad advertising.. would mean the line is so bad she misunderstood him. lol

  • "Anthony, people will always need plates" LOL!

  • LOVE IT!!! but the retro craze is making me feel old! lol x

  • I used to love this advert, and seeing it again brings back good memories

  • Britain was the world leader in the 1980s - what planet were you living on?!

  • Britain was the world leader in the 1980s - what planet were you living on?!

  • I'm wondering that myself. The country was in a right state back then. Just goes to prove that some people only will remember what they want.

  • Bloody hell, this brings back memories!!!!!!!

  • RUDDy RIGHT !! i was in my school doing C.S.E exams...and then they brought in G.C.S.E i could of got better results back then IF THE WORLD DID NOT SUCK THEN WE WOULD ALL FALL OFF

  • Me too. GCE and CSE yay. GCSE boo! Was in the 1st year of them and boy did they screw em up.

  • I think you mean 'would have'. It seems you need English lessons.

  • Pity BT are so shite these days!!

  • Any more Beattie Ads?

  • Am I right In saying Maureen was "married" (In the ad's) to Carry On Legend Bernard Bresslaw???

  • According to Wikipedia, her husband was played by Geoffrey Chiswick, her son by Linal Haft and Anthony by Jacob Krichefski. Bernard Bresslaw and Miriam Margoyles played a couple of friends of Beattie called Gerald and Dolly.

  • Yeah that does ring a bell, cheers Perranporth!

  • There is an advert with Bresslaw but I think he played the husband of one of Maureen's friends who came round to dinner.

  • The Classic Maureen Lipman advert in a series that she did for BT.Thanks a lot Shaun.Great job mate.
