I agree the US version is cheesy - but - I also grew up a lot of US cop shows of that era... I think they meant to capture that, more than to reproduce the UK version. I enjoyed it, either way. When I first watched it, I didn't know it was a remake (probably helped). Now that I know there is one, I can't wait to see the original!

The UK version is good but the U.S. version will always be great to us simply because it takes place in our hometown and takes us back to those very different and wild days. I bought the US version on DVD. It got kinda stodgy in some episodes, but it did get away with some things that the UK version couldn't. Like the episode where Sam works alongside his future mentor - turning that into a NY Blaxploitation story was genius. Harvey Keitel was too cool for Gene Hunt - Hunt has to be a post-pubescent boy in a man's body, not an ageing cop with a good fist. And the ending was sudden and shite, no matter how built-up it was. Apart from that, it was pretty OK.
The original British version has never been shown in Czech Republic. I'm one of the very few people here to know it. As I love the actors and actresses playing there I downloaded it. This American version is awful comparing to the series I know. They just copied the scenes, however all the uniqueness and everything I love about the serial has disappeared. And what makes me really furious, this American NOTHING is being shown on a Czech TV channel. :(
It burns us! The US is another time travel story that gah is not cool time travel Its so stereotypical here. The UK one was bold enough to make nearly everyone on show sexist/racist/homophobic which was true at the time. Sam in the US was sot two dimensional, the actors was not into the role like Simm was. Simm breath life into Sam to point when the series two ended you were screaming "No Sam don't leave!". And the ending.........who approved of that?

Very close to the UK version, except the movie-trailer guy just made it seem like a pathetic attempt of turning Life-On-Mars into a full action movie.
The aim of Life on Mars UK was to show a time and try and make it authentic as it could be. It appears this one looks more like anyother 1970's cop series which is where it loses its appeal.
The UK one isn't just another cop series. It has a focus on the time and what it was like. Also notice how the BBC are able to use 1970's camera angle and styles whereas the American one looks modern

The UK version is good but the U.S. version will always be great to us simply because it takes place in our hometown and takes us back to those very different and wild days. Thats a feeling that the Brit version can never give us. This show is perfect for NY not fucking London! So shut up ya bloody wankers, and leave our version be!

@bjedmond haha ok i don't give a fuck bout where in England it tok place, and besides the network officials wanted to end the series quickly and unfortunately yea the writers did make a pretty crudy ended i will agree but like i said it wasnt made for you guys across the pond retard. Us New Yorkers on the American side of the bloody pond liked it because it took us to a time that simply just doesnt exist anymore here in our town. It took us back and thats what i loved soo much about it.

I bought the US version on DVD. It got kinda stodgy in some episodes, but it did get away with some things that the UK version couldn't. Like the episode where Sam works alongside his future mentor - turning that into a NY Blaxploitation story was genius. Harvey Keitel was too cool for Gene Hunt - Hunt has to be a post-pubescent boy in a man's body, not an ageing cop with a good fist. And the ending was sudden and shite, no matter how built-up it was. Apart from that, it was pretty OK.

The original British version has never been shown in Czech Republic. I'm one of the very few people here to know it. As I love the actors and actresses playing there I downloaded it. This American version is awful comparing to the series I know. They just copied the scenes, however all the uniqueness and everything I love about the serial has disappeared. And what makes me really furious, this American NOTHING is being shown on a Czech TV channel. :(

It burns us! The US is another time travel story that gah is not cool time travel Its so stereotypical here. The UK one was bold enough to make nearly everyone on show sexist/racist/homophobic which was true at the time. Sam in the US was sot two dimensional, the actors was not into the role like Simm was. Simm breath life into Sam to point when the series two ended you were screaming "No Sam don't leave!". And the ending.........who approved of that?

bloody hell that is shite! im the biggest fan of LOM and Ashes to Ashes so i thought i would see what the USA version is like....dont think i will bother! The voice over sounds like low rate dvd film and the script is sooo copied.
Shame really as the USA can produce excellent stuff like 24 but they messed up here.

For gods sake, why don't they just enjoy the UK series for what it is? A fun, action-packed, greatly produced and made British TV series. If they ever thought that by replacing Simm and Glenister with O'Mara and Keitel everything will come out great, they made a one hell of a mistake. Go the hell with these remakes!

the ending of the US version is complete pants and completely unoriginal. The fact they dared ask to change the end because they felt our UK end wasn't "creative enough" is a joke. No wonder it didn't make it past one 'season'.

The aim of Life on Mars UK was to show a time and try and make it authentic as it could be. It appears this one looks more like anyother 1970's cop series which is where it loses its appeal.
The UK one isn't just another cop series. It has a focus on the time and what it was like. Also notice how the BBC are able to use 1970's camera angle and styles whereas the American one looks modern

I actually watched whole series, and the first couple of episodes I could recite as it went along, they're so similar.
After that, it was so cheesy it made cheddar look like granite. It just looked like a sort of Starsky and Hutch ripoff.
The acting was okay, but they didn't have that sparkle that made Sam, Gene, Chris, Annie etc. that bit more memorable.
