As a kid I flew in a NWA DC-3 from Mpls to Rapid City through an intense thunderstorm with wind shear and every other form of nastiness. Even the stewardesses were scared pale. I still don't like flying to this day and I blame that it on that experience. But at least I can say that I flew in a DC-3 ;-))
i cant help but to notice the white stipes on the wings meaning this is one of the transports that took part in the invasion of normandy or if it wasnt they started putting the stripes on in 1944 so who knows what this old bird has been through in all her days
You guys should hear my custom sounds I made for "Flight Sim 2004". New Startup sounds on up to wide open. But there not my sounds to start with...they belong to the Great flight sim plane builders from all over the world, I just tweek them for myself cause I LOVE the sound of these beautiful planes. It's fun how much you can tweek on this flight sim :)
In 1957 I flew on one of these from French Morocco to Germany which included
two stops. Flying over the mountains between Spain and France was beautiful
because of the low flying, I think the total flying time was around seventeen hours, we were speeding along at 180mph. We sat sideways on steel bucket seats and it was loud but enjoyable.
ive got to fly in one of these it is so awesome. thanks for posting my grandfather worked on these during world war 2 along with p-51's, p-47's, b-25's, b-17's,b-24's etc. this was my grandfathers favorite airplane he worked on he cleaned coal of of them during the Berlin airlift.
As a small boy my Mom and Dad would take us to the airport to watch the planes. Does anyone know why these large aircraft engines seem so reluctant to start
..helped restore one of these ladies a while back in Aussie..lttle things like checking rivets. lockwiring the fuel tanks.. nothing too 'techo'....but loved every second of it ....beautiful aircraft....
I had 20 years without listening to that sound. I used to fly in this airplane from a small town near Puerto Vallarta to Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. This was my first airplane and the best of all.
Hey Mustang man, I didn't know it was cams that made that sound, well open exhaust helps too but, it makes sense when you hear any very hi-performance V8 engine they also exhibit this sound with very aggressive cams. Thanks for the info. 555 man can listen to some of the Subaru 555 videos from the mid 90's and they also sound lumpy at idle.
@K27grpb , your right, the cam ring gear was what mad the small block chevy designers in 1955 get the rump sound, still to this day nothing compares to the radials
Hey Imprexxzaman555-It doesnt have nails in the cylinders...it is the aggressive camshaft profile...long duration ..valves open and shut londer period of time for more fuel flow..makes horsepower...I guess you dont know anything about engines. Notice how it smooths out at higher rpm?
Was this DC-3/C-47 preparing to take flight in an airshow (I'm guessing that's what that was) or was it just starting up for display on the ground? Finally, is this plane still at Mattoon, Illinois? I live in St. Louis, which isn't far from there at all, and would like to see it if it's still there. Does Mattoon do this airshow annually (assuming that's what I'm seeing in this video).
Question...did they have to restart the left engine a second time as well? Because it looks like the propeller blade is slowing down towards the end, or is it just speeding up and it's an optical illusion?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
not this radial, not sure if its supposed to sound like that but to me it sounds like som1 put nails in the cyllinders or all the bolts are loose and are bouncing around. I've heard much better sounding radials than this.
I wish we'd stop making such new planes and just stick with what we have cuz planes like this take talent to fly, soon planes wont even need a pilot. its a shame. all we need is a 747 and a dc3, and the world would be happy
well about the pilots i watched recently a program in discovery channel about that. Resuming the program its probably that air traffic controllers disappear sooner than pilots...¿why? because air thaffic will increase in the next years and it wil be a mess controlling all those airplanes so propably pilots will be allowed to the "Free fly" which consists in planning the route the want without passing through airways and beacons. Well have a nice day... :)
hm, that's intersting, but it sounds like it could get potentially dangerous if someone makes a mistake in their plans. i'd like to watcch that cuz piloting takes extreme skill and it would be a shame to ever haave some automated system do that
@L324RT12 it sounds better than a muscle car. i love muscle cars with big v8's. i have a camaro with a 350 myself. these things are even better though. 14 cylinders 1,200 hp they are like a muscle car on steroids

-A North American T-6 painted in British colors taxies by,
-And a North American P-51 Mustang does a high-speed pass.
