  • As a kid I flew in a NWA DC-3 from Mpls to Rapid City through an intense thunderstorm with wind shear and every other form of nastiness. Even the stewardesses were scared pale. I still don't like flying to this day and I blame that it on that experience. But at least I can say that I flew in a DC-3 ;-))

  • i cant help but to notice the white stipes on the wings meaning this is one of the transports that took part in the invasion of normandy or if it wasnt they started putting the stripes on in 1944 so who knows what this old bird has been through in all her days

  • You guys should hear my custom sounds I made for "Flight Sim 2004". New Startup sounds on up to wide open. But there not my sounds to start with...they belong to the Great flight sim plane builders from all over the world, I just tweek them for myself cause I LOVE the sound of these beautiful planes. It's fun how much you can tweek on this flight sim :)

  • Yeah!...Like music to my ears. BIG BOYS TOYS!!

  • @Hammy519 you mean star engine, right?

  • It's like listening to a great orchestral music for me, Great plane good engines.

  • 3 people are jet pilots

  • Just like the cackle of a nitro funny car. You can't beat it!

  • In 1957 I flew on one of these from French Morocco to Germany which included

two stops. Flying over the mountains between Spain and France was beautiful

because of the low flying, I think the total flying time was around seventeen hours, we were speeding along at 180mph. We sat sideways on steel bucket seats and it was loud but enjoyable.

  • from 0:26 to 1:00 is music to my ears

  • The old girl was stubborn at first. :)

  • Man do I love that sound!!

  • starts like a harley....

  • great unsung aircraft which carried out so many dangerous missions starting from ww2

  • :*( why ooooo why were turbine jet engines discovered!!!

  • My grandpa was a radio operator in one of these

  • With the Merlin engine in the background, reminds me of The Longest Day!!!

  • Ohhh....to go back in time where those props orchestrated the sky!

    Thanks - love it!

  • the only thing it misses is sreaming eagle paratroopers :P

  • damn i wish mil a/c were still pisten engens..

  • I was at AJO one day and a DC-3 backfired. I thought a bomb went off, lol.

  • ive got to fly in one of these it is so awesome. thanks for posting my grandfather worked on these during world war 2 along with p-51's, p-47's, b-25's, b-17's,b-24's etc. this was my grandfathers favorite airplane he worked on he cleaned coal of of them during the Berlin airlift.

  • Doesn't matter... C47, DC3, ohhh that's all that matters. thanks for the vid

  • Revs were held too low after start - about 700 rpm. Should have been advanced to 1,000 rpm. How do I know? - I have 7,000hrs on DC3s.

  • @klzzzerx

    (LOL) Nice life you've had . . .

  • Cuz the engines are old and not used very often.

  • As a small boy my Mom and Dad would take us to the airport to watch the planes. Does anyone know why these large aircraft engines seem so reluctant to start

  • if your car sounded like this would you drive it?

  • have to agree this is the best dc-3 startup on here. love these things - messy, smelly, stubborn but always fun to watch!

  • Lovely aircraft!

  • cam specs lol

  • that is what i want my car to sound like lol hell that sounds like alot of power

  • *first attempt... fail*

*second attempt*... a lot of smoke and a working engine thad works like shit*

*me... WAW what a bioutiful sound and engine mechanisme :D *

  • My favorite aircraft of all time! I wish I owned one of these awesome "Tail Draggers"!! Great video!!

  • The sound of America. Back when we had a spine. . . .

  • @papabugs71 dont bring me into this :)

  • I LOVE THE SHAPE OF THE DC-3

  • The smoke, the smell, the occasional fires...Love these old engines

  • @p51aviator007 I get the same thing with my 60's truck I like my cars like my airplanes good and classic.

  • i flew in one today.

  • The 1st 20 secs is pure WWII sounds until the whirley messes up the harmony in the sounds. :P

  • ive got to taxi in one, the vibration was so heavy it felt like the engines where going to fall of the wings, it was awesome.

  • yea i too,i love world war 2 and this ,,sky train"dakota :)

  • DAmn man I love that sound!!!!!

  • On early 3s, you could start both engines simultaneously, which seemed to amaze everyone on the ramp.

  • hugely over rich mixture, but still great sound.

  • That's the only way they will start. Radial's need alot of fuel to wake 'em up.

  • @klesmer cam ring gear, thats real cool sounding

  • Dude I don't remember where that came from but thanks.

  • @NesteHukka Na its just not running on all cylinders

  • Sweeeet!

  • beautiful sound..!..

..helped restore one of these ladies a while back in Aussie..lttle things like checking rivets. lockwiring the fuel tanks.. nothing too 'techo'....but loved every second of it ....beautiful aircraft....

  • I had 20 years without listening to that sound. I used to fly in this airplane from a small town near Puerto Vallarta to Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. This was my first airplane and the best of all.

  • Hey Mustang man, I didn't know it was cams that made that sound, well open exhaust helps too but, it makes sense when you hear any very hi-performance V8 engine they also exhibit this sound with very aggressive cams. Thanks for the info. 555 man can listen to some of the Subaru 555 videos from the mid 90's and they also sound lumpy at idle.

  • @K27grpb , your right, the cam ring gear was what mad the small block chevy designers in 1955 get the rump sound, still to this day nothing compares to the radials

  • lov it

  • Hey Imprexxzaman555-It doesnt have nails in the cylinders...it is the aggressive camshaft profile...long duration ..valves open and shut londer period of time for more fuel flow..makes horsepower...I guess you dont know anything about engines. Notice how it smooths out at higher rpm?

  • Damn that's sweet

  • Was this DC-3/C-47 preparing to take flight in an airshow (I'm guessing that's what that was) or was it just starting up for display on the ground? Finally, is this plane still at Mattoon, Illinois? I live in St. Louis, which isn't far from there at all, and would like to see it if it's still there. Does Mattoon do this airshow annually (assuming that's what I'm seeing in this video).

  • My Dad flew the AC-47 "Spooky" out of Bein Hua in 68. Thank You for sharing this video, Mark

  • Question...did they have to restart the left engine a second time as well? Because it looks like the propeller blade is slowing down towards the end, or is it just speeding up and it's an optical illusion?

  • ...super masina"!

  • was that a dauntless in the background?

  • AT-6 Texan.

  • wtf

  • What a BEAUTIFUL NOISE........

  • lol

  • 100001% agree man,love that sound!

  • 100001% disagree! it's not noise, it's music!

  • AMEN BROTHER!

  • There is no sound more beautiful than a radial engine starting up.

  • its an old plane, that and it wasnt filemd in a movie theater, plus youtube's audio quality sucks

  • my God i love that sound!

  • i want 1

  • i want 1 2

  • I wish we'd stop making such new planes and just stick with what we have cuz planes like this take talent to fly, soon planes wont even need a pilot. its a shame. all we need is a 747 and a dc3, and the world would be happy

  • well about the pilots i watched recently a program in discovery channel about that. Resuming the program its probably that air traffic controllers disappear sooner than pilots...¿why? because air thaffic will increase in the next years and it wil be a mess controlling all those airplanes so propably pilots will be allowed to the "Free fly" which consists in planning the route the want without passing through airways and beacons. Well have a nice day... :)

  • hm, that's intersting, but it sounds like it could get potentially dangerous if someone makes a mistake in their plans. i'd like to watcch that cuz piloting takes extreme skill and it would be a shame to ever haave some automated system do that

  • Real airplanes have round engines.

  • @tinytalent Unless there liquid cooled.

  • @tinytalent Real airplanes can fly. That is much more important than the looks of the engine.

  • The DC-3, one of THE most beautifull airplanes of WW2. But if i'm honest the spitfire is no.1 by me

  • id love to go back in time to when these were still in commercial use

  • They still use them in Alaska to transport passengers and freight.

  • I think this is EC-47,isn't it.

  • Excellent video... And tha clouds of smoke during startup... :) NICE!!!!!

  • that sounded like my next door neighbor's lawn mower.i don't know how safe i'd feel in that.

  • Well, you obviously dont know jack about aircraft. The DC-3 happens to have one of the best safety records of anything in the air.....

  • Your neighbor must have a hell of a lawnmower. That's the sound of thousands (yes thousands) of horsepower.

  • Best Radial engine start video on youtube

  • I want one. This one sounds fuckn awesome at idle. like a top fuel drag car. Does anyone know how much fuel they burn per hour.

  • Typical burn is 100-125 gallons per hour at cruise speed.

  • Yikes. I don't think I want to ride in that one.

  • wooow hoe kom jij zo dicht bij zo'n pracht van een toestel....ow man echt mooi geluid.

  • ahaha ;d

    luv that plane :* ;d

  • They sound like a bag of nails till they get going!

  • God I love the sound of a radial!!! They sound like a muscle car!!

  • @L324RT12 dont compare a radial to a muscle car. You dont want to make all the muscle car owners ashamed.

  • @L324RT12 it sounds better than a muscle car. i love muscle cars with big v8's. i have a camaro with a 350 myself. these things are even better though. 14 cylinders 1,200 hp they are like a muscle car on steroids

  • @L324RT12 My thoughts exactly!

  • what plane is in the backround

  • Three other aircraft are visible:

-A Robinson R22 Beta helicopter takes off,

-A North American T-6 painted in British colors taxies by,

-And a North American P-51 Mustang does a high-speed pass.

  • IS the DC-3 part of fina-caf airsho?

If so, then thats the one i saw last week!

  • C-47 Dakota
