I have loved Kaki King as a performer and a muso who plays from the heart. Her music is inspirational, one off and unique.I wish I had half as much talent as she has in her little toe. Dreams come true listening to Kaki!
Listening to this, seeing Tosin Abasi and Andy McKee on the righthand related videos tells me I'm on the right musical path of my life. I wish this sound would just follow me everywhere I go.
Who's complaining about her mistakes? I'd like to see you mess up and make it still sound beautiful at the same time lol. Her mistakes inspire me.... She's really awesome though, glad I found her.
OMFG! I was listening to this and I thought to myself "this is probably the most beautiful song I've heard on the guitar, she has a beautiful style that I hope to have, I really want to learn this song" I noticed that the song ended and I was going to go try and find the tabs and then she said that she was going to teach you ON THE VIDEO! HAHA!
yeah there some mess ups and ther pretty obvious. but the rest of the song is beautiful for what it is. i guess since tosin is in the suggestions yall cant accept anything lower lol
@andrewkeen24 Tosin, not a virtuoso? A virtuoso is defined by its ability to play technically an instrument, just go look at the definition. So, you individual tastes aren't the point, you must not have looked to everything the guy do. 1rst, the guy has more of its reputation for metal shredding than for acoustic stuff, but even in thoses conditions he still play impressively without distorsion sometimes.
@andrewkeen24 I don't know your friends, however, just show me a vid you think accuratey shows how your michael hedges is a virtuoso, and then we'll compare (for me not to take like its easiest song for a comparaison which would be unfair, even virtuosos sometimes play easy things)
BTW, you don't need to be well known to be a virtuoso. And yes, I still stand with my definition, go look it up if you don't believe me.
@blobliblo35 You're a blundering fool. By your definition Michael Hedges is not a virtuoso, but you want me to show you that he is? He doesnt really play specifically technically. Whoopdee doo. And all I was saying is that your definition seems specifically stupid as the word virtuoso is traditionally applied to someone exceptionally good at an instrument in general. Playing technically just sounds like a retarded definition. I can even play something technical if I practice it.
@andrewkeen24 Well, no, because I never pretended your guy is a virtuoso (don't know him enough to judge), i just wanted to see why you consider he does. but forget it since we don't even have the same definition of a virtuoso. Why do I think being a virtuoso is mostly about technique? First of all, the most important part (not the only one through) of being good at its instrument is to convey the right thing playing, i think you'll agree....
@andrewkeen24 ...The thing is, the guitarists seen as the best are often the one approved the most by the music lovers in the genre, since no one can objectively mesure the "ability to play the right thing", since it's just suggestive, people don't all like the same music. So, if that is the definition of a virtuoso, there isn't anything that could give any convincingness to your opinion, since it's just your tastes and you're wasting your time.
@andrewkeen24 second point, why do people always think of players like steve vai (for example) when asked about what a virtuoso is, and nobody would even talk about umm kurt cobain? Maybe you don't care about the guy, but he still is highly regarded as a musician. For a less extreme example, while hendrix is considered by many to be best best there ever was, people still will mention him less than vai when asked for a virtuoso name.
@andrewkeen24 To finish, this doesn't affect the definition of a virtuoso, but being good technically as much as the top level technical guitarists actually require a ton of determination, to pratice the many hours per day to reach and to maintain their level. So no, it isn't something that is to the reach of the averagely motivated mind.
(BTW I don't even value virtuosity that much personally, just a bit. and sorry for the LOOOOOOOOOONG reply, i guess i need to abreviate myself lol)
I'm a tree hugger and I love this girl!! I've played guitar since I was 13 and I tour with local bands as a rhythm guitarist and vocalist and I could hope to have the creativity she carries in her music. I'm 19 and I promise that being a "stoner hippie" has nothing to do with recognizing an amazing musician.
I've seen guitarists with more technical proficiency, but few of them have her musical imagination and originality. I like the fact that she constantly experiments with open tunings.
@TheBlues088 I've just been listening to Michael Hedges. I mean absolutely no disrespect but in comparison this basically hurts my ears. I'm sure she has potential but she has a long way to go.
I wish that non-musicians would realize that musicians make mistakes. I have seen Andy McKee, Matt Thomas, and Stephen Bennett, guitarists on a caliber well above hers (no offense to her, I'm trying to prove a point) mess up. It's because we are people too. The people previously mentioned are all considered virtuosos of their craft, but they make mistakes, now they don't do it often, as in 20+ times in a gig, but they have a tendency to make a few mistakes in just about every song. Thanks.
@Hylianmetroid Good point, but I will say that regardless of what guitarists may be superior to her technically, no guitarist of her style has touched me in the way that she has.
@Hylianmetroid Right? Actually if you put a camera on any musician it's like a... fuck up ray gun. You will fail, and then after you fail you'll fail again because that last fail was unacceptable and you want to punch a baby gibbon. You really have to sneak up on a musician in solitude to get their best out of them, though when they spy you creeping it's the cops, and they will rape your children.
i absolutely love this song but i think its bullshit how i would have to pay to watch the rest of this video (of her guitar lesson)...she's not making the money off of it
performers are not machines, you can't always expect perfection. her records are amazing. just admire her musical expression for what it is. pure, raw, human.
@iceeagles83 um im not sure of wat u said since im still bleh about music theory, but the recorded version of the song is E b c# g# b d# and when she plays it live at concerts its D a b f# a and c#, as said in the video. its prob just a typo in the info.
@512Airsoft not only that but their tone just sucks. I mean some people may like the tone of these guitars, but I don't. This is no offense to Kaki at all, her music is absolutely stunning. But I often wonder how her stuff would sound on an all solid tonewood $4K acoustic. I bet it would blow our minds. I' m suprised that she doesn't care, or maybe she's endorsed by Ovation and doesn't have a choice. Hmm...
Thanks guys! This was great, I mean although I think it might be impossible for even Kaki King to teach ME how to play a Kaki King song! LOL She truly is a master of her craft.
youre really stupid. obviously if its "really annoying" it does do something. you can hear it enough to annoy you. i doubt you know what your talking about anyway

your really trying to tell me that vibrato is a pointless technique?? i dont even know how to respond to that. the type of vibrato that she was using is effective and has purpose and relevance.

Yes, i agree--There is no authenticity in playing like a robot. Wes Montgomery & Joe Pass made mistakes yet considered virtuosos.
Joe Pass used to say "It's not the mistake..it's what you do afterwards that makes up for it" .
I respect Kaki King for pushing the envelope and not staying in the safe pentatonic range of Eric Clapton and many others, who are considered "Gods".
She's an extremely imaginative artist.

Could JamPlay correct the listed tuning?
It's clear from watching her open strings that the intervals between strings 6-->5-->4 are 3.5 & 1 tone respectively (so 'DAD' isn't correct).
Could you list the correct tuning (whether DABF#AC# for this particular playing or the tone higher EBC#G#BD#)?
I appreciate she states the tuning after her song, but it'd be handy for navigating her vids :)
Also more helpful than users slagging vibrato or demanding acknowledgement of their own greatness...

@hxcmthrfcka You're not reading. Vibrato
isn't pointless but when you do it incorrectly
like Kaki is it doesn't add anything. As hard
as I listen it does nothing to the note. You're
not meant to just shake your hand and hope
for the best, you rapidly bend the string using
your wrist as a pivot.
And as for the technical thing, watch my video/
