By the way, DCotE was a good horror game, and, as I said, quite true to the feeling and atmosphere that HPL evokes. However, the fighting (that is a Chaosium influence) kinda spoiled it for me. You just CAN''T fight the Mythos...and if you try, you die. I mean, c'mon, Jack kills 2 Great Old Ones in this game...frankly, that insults HPL's legacy
I liked Penumbra and Amnesia better (although they're not directly based on HPL), because there you have no chance to fight back. Frightening as hell.
@ballrdd24: Well, I gather that the developers were influenced not only by HPLs actual work, but also by the CoC RPG by Chaosium. While the story and the overall atmosphere of DCotE are fairly faithful to "The Shadow over Innsmouth", the design of virtually all monsters resembles the RPG variants.
And yeah, in the CoC RPG, Shoggoths indeed are described as, well, pretty much "massive puddles of randomness with eyes", as Kyuubi424 put it below.
I've, personally, always thought of a shoggoth as a formless, oozing tar that is constantly morphing and changing(exactly like in Mountains of Madness I suppose), forming mouths on stalks, eyestalks, a nameless horror.
But I suppose my expectations were too high, as the perfect shoggoth probably cannot be made as of yet with modern technology.
Though the shoggoth's appearence was disappointing to me, like I said, I liked the rest of thegame
Who talks like that, anyway? And what about that silly "Tekka-li-li" thing that Shoggoths are supposed to say? The Freddy Kruger character is so over.
That's putting it very simply, but yes. Still, the game leaves alot out that isn't shown. There's also a call it's supposed to make, "Tekeli-li", in mockery of the Elder Things.
Pretty much. It can be generally recognized as something tar-like, oozing clear fluid from pores throughout it's body, and moving organs and such. "Tekeli-li" helps as a definition I suppose, :P
@ballrdd24 Well, you could argue it does make that call. During the time when you're running around avoiding the Shoggoth, there's this particular sound it makes. It's not the gurgling, and it's not the screeching. It's a separate noise that sounds incredibly unsettling.
Can you pick it up? It's like a strange distorted crowing.
@Kyuubi424 To clarify further: In the Mythos, Shoggoths are a sort of genetically engineered servitor race of beings called the "Elder Things", as described in "At The Mountains of Madness". If I'm not mistaken, Shoggoths were designed to have no or very little self-awareness and intelligence, but over time they somehow developed intelligence and rebelled against their masters - one of the reasons the Elder Things went extinct.
@nibelung34343 I think Hydra was the final monster. The one big fat creature in a tank? Dagon was the one attacking the ship on the way to Devil's reef
Troll detected. In case you aren't trolling are just an idiot, Call of Cthulhu is a short story that is part of a massive and extremely popular horror mythos, all written by legendary horror writer H.P. Lovecraft in 1910-1930s.
@Cainus44 Well, first of all, don't call me anything is you can't even speak proper English and you failed the grammar usage part of your ITBS Test (I have no doubt you did if you even took it), second of all I just said it's the name of a Metallica song. Calm down, and if you do, I'll give you a biscuit, I'll put it on your nose.
Actually you can archieve an 'A' Grade in the end of the game for having completed the game within 6 or for hours or so I think on Expert Mode with a minimum amount of sanity loss and drugs within your body. But well... the first time you'll play the game you'll surely have at least about a dozen hours of time with it because of a few trickey riddles, safe cracking and numerous shootouts and stuff.
Nah, it's quite long in my opinion. Nice graphic and you can play it even on old pc. It's mainly for Lovecraftian mythos fans but it's a great starting point for everybody interested in horror & mutating creep, tissues etc.
did someone knew the epic music when shoggoth show up?

The worst adaption of a Shoggoth I've seen. Hopefully the film adaption of On The Mountains Of Madness will have a better version.
Still, COC was pretty fun to play. Damn good.

True, they indeed do.

So, the Shoggoth is pretty much the equivalent of a massive, dirty puddle of randomness. With eyes.
Interesting.

@ballrdd24 Fair enough then. I don't know much about this Cthulhu Mythos business. >_<
So does the Shoggoth have no defined form or appearance then?

@ballrdd24 Interesting. So it's the equivalent of a slime, but more grotesque. Cool. ^_^
So, it can make a call? Is it able to speak a language or something like that?
Kyuubi424 10 months ago
@Kyuubi424
More or less.
It can't really speak a language(Well, it could form vocal chords and such if it wished I guess), but it constantly repeats, "Tekeli-li!"

I kind of could, and I got to say, it was kind of creepy. Huh.
