  • whats on his feet?

  • I love Monty Roberts and the way he works with horses. I could cry every time I see him having achieved a goal with the horse, and I really cried the first time I did a join-up and the horse followed me. Its such an incredible feeling you get addicted to it ^^

  • seriously this is awesome =) I saw Monty in Gleneagles and it was amazing :P sure it ain't everyone's cup of tea but people who are haters shouldn't even be on this video if you don't approve and also Monty uses "natural horsemanship" as in horse language, what he uses, other horses use on each other douches |-). x

  • This horse has every reason not to join up. But because a horse is forgiving he will do so. Why do people have to be so cruel as to stack a horses feet?

  • whats on the horses feet? i cant work it out! are they just over-reach boots?

  • i love this guy! when ever he comes to england i go an see him! unlike pareli monty just teaches, not preaches! he never EVER says his way IS the right way! even though his methods are always the ones that work, he just finds a way for you AND your horse to co-operate together in a way that suits you both! he doest train horses to do tricks like pareli and saying that it is a 'bond' just because the horse can sit and lie down on command! PFFT!!

    MONTY IS A LIVING LEGEND!

  • @Ruth1988 so true parelli is a load of bull shit lolz. Monty all the way

  • Making this horse run on pavement? Whats wrong with his legs/hooves?

  • But in this case, jin-up doesn't work :S ...

  • how big should the round pen be?. and could a portable electric fence work for join up?

  • I'm not totally sure, but i think it could... you would have to be extremely careful though cause in Join-up the horse wants to flee as far away as they can and they may end up brushing against the fencing. I would suggest turning the voltage way down...

  • Those are shipping boots! in demonstrations the crowd can get the horse excited. The padded shipping boots are to protect him from hitting his legs on the lower rail of the round pen.

  • Can somebody explain me what are these things on his feets for?? thanks!!

alguien puede explicarme para que son esas cosas en sus patas? muchas gracias!!

poi qualcuno espiegarmi para ché sono queste cose che usa il cavallo? grazzie mila!!

  • i agree.

    he's not gaited.

  • Actually to the question about whats on JFK's feet. i can't be sure but to me JFK looks to be an american saddlebred. the "boots" that he's wearing look like weighted shoes to improve his gait

  • he walks really weird

  • the horse has just like.... well a lot of horses whair it( the stuff on his feet) its nothing bad its sorta like soxs i guss

  • where can i buy his book?

  • On a bookshop!!! jejeje

  • wow! that was truley amazing! i love your book! you are so incredible and really have changed so many horse's lives!

  • I went to watch Monty Roberts at arena UK, he is truly amaising, he only has to drop his and and put it across his body and the horse knows to drop its head. x

  • omg i met him it was so kool got his autograph as well

    i'd luv to do this

my mum trained with him aswell she went to america on a corse

  • prissonbreakobsessed, he has Bell boots on his hooves, to stop him kicking his front hooves when he canters.

  • what is on the horses feet???

    someone please tell me!

  • wonderful horse!

  • its cool....but he just goes on and on and on. AND ITS LIKE 8 MIN. LONG!!!!! too much going on. people laughing in the backround is not a nice touch. but oh well. its in heartland so yay.

  • i totally agree with what carlzvekan says certain natural horsemanship methods DO NOT suit everyone i have sent horses to monty roberts one that was and one that wasnt a demo, the demo horse did get ridden eventually but his situation and his pure fear of humans also made me look at other ways to help him overcome his fears yet the non demo horse is awesome, i have also used the parelli 7 games with certain horses to with great success i guess its a case of horses for courses so grow up people

  • however id still prefer any natural horsemanship to well.. none. And there isnt just one natural horsemanship program that works, monty robert might not work for some people and parelli might not. "parelli isnt for everyone" - Pat Parelli. And im bloody well sure monty roberts isnt for everyone judging by the previous comments. but comone guys if you truely loved horses and what these men are doing for them or trying to do for them, should we really be arguing over which is better?

  • everyone just stop arguing over montry roberts, i mean im a parelli person and i absaloutly adore it, its gotten me so far with my horse, and i respect what monty roberts is trying to do for horses but i don't approve of his methods,

  • ...Within a considerably short time whereby the horse put up an appx 20 min show, rejecting Monty's determination to show the horse that he is a good and strong leader. Eventually,at the end of about a 45min/hour long show, the horse accepted Monty's leadership, Monty had haltered tamed, bridaled, saddled and rode him! so yes! it works. he had never previously been in contact with the horse. He also mentioned that it does not normally take that long - so long as your body language is 'fluent'

  • I have had the honor of seeing this man use his join-up method twice, the first time was with a horse that i'm pretty sure satan had paid a personal visit to ;P (joking, he was very wild)...

  • monty states that as a teenager he witnessed the domininant mare in a mustang herd exerting her dominance over a subordinate horse by pushing him away from the herd and kept away until he showed that he accepted that she was the boss. everything that monty does in the pen the young horse showed the mare. monty is only using the horse's own language to communicate. he is not being predatory in any manner. spend an afternoon sometime and watch horses in a pasture. you'll see the same things.

  • by the way, i also do parelli and t-touch, so ive also done my research, and from that i have found that join up and more of his methods seem to be the best, actually i also find it effective to mix parelli and things that monty roberts teaches together.

  • i cannot honestly believe what i am reading. especially from 'BlazingAva'. im not going to arugue with you, trust me i wouldnt want to give you that satisfaction, all i am going to do is ask you a few simple questions. what do you honestly know about Monty Roberts? have you ever been to one of his clinics? if not, how can you possibly say that he is abusing these horses? did you ever hear the story about him and shy boy? his methods are incredible, harmless and work.

  • Ive had a parelli course and i can tell you its nothing like the wonders monty creats!!! The guy said he would help me wid finding transport for my mistreated horse and he had met him ( ma horse is 17.2 hh) and he got me a trailor of 15 hh I mean COME ON !!

  • BlazingAva is just wanting attention, for people that dont like monty roberts dont even bother posting a comment we want to learn about horses not fight over them!!! And do not go on about parelli my friends have had horses that had to put down because they went so wild because or parelli!

  • will you people quit arguing and just comment on the video? I love both Monty AND Parelli! so please keep your personal opinions to yourself, nuless they are nice, ok?

  • You know, given enough time, any horse will come up and sniff you. Harrassing it in a round pen first is unnecessary and obnoxious.

  • haha amen!

  • what really cracks me up is i only put this up for my personal use... so i would be able to send a couple friends of mine the link. and now everyone has used it to attack other people over Monty's methods.

So carry on if you wish.

  • @booyha88 Before you say something, first learn the communication and language of horses....

  • HAHAHA at the end the horse still wouldn't follow him. Want to be friends my ass.

  • The video also didn't go to the end of the session, you twit. If the session wasn't done, how do you know what the horse did at the end?

Shut your mouth if you've never done this yourself. It's one of the best methods of starting a horse, as well as helping horses that've been traumatized by people like you who fail to understand them.

  • Really I've only dealt with abused horses and agressive horses I've studied the mthod I didn't just say this I know what I'm talking about unlike you who just believe everything out of his pathetic mouth

  • No he never spent any time in the wild. There is an entire book on the lies he told. All I see is a predetor saying "I'm comming to get you!" And forcing that horse to be with him. I wouldn't ever put my horse into that.

  • yeah cause im sure you have that kind of experience, your horse would be damn lucky to spend 5 minutes with monty.

  • yeah and its fine if you want to follow PNH You dont see me on any PNH Threads giving Pat Parelli Shit do you? If you dont like it rack off, but answer this, you think the horse is forced into obeying what he thinks is a predator? How well do you think a lion would get a horse to calmly walk on a float if it had a severve phobia if it did it monty's way? answer not at all, monty is not forcing them to do anything!!

  • after they run them tired then yes the horse will stop.

  • haha yeah a fully fit tb racehorse is completely run tired in five minutes then forced to join up!! Ha you make me laugh BlazingAva!! Thanks for the giggle :} I wont bother trying to convince you, i dont need to, montys countless rescues of so called unsavable horses have spoken for themselves.

  • u r right shadowmaresurewing. do u read the heartland series? how do u feel on having a horse go barefoot?

  • All of my horses are barefoot!! I have a special farrier who specifies in barefoot techniques, it makes the whole hoof stronger but i dont have a problem with anyone who does shoe thier horses it just depends on individual circumstances and no i have not read the heartland series sorry, i will look into it!

  • why u!!!!!!! how dare you. u should read the heartland series. he's not a liar. it's a revolutionary method.

  • hahaha you YOU should see the law suites he has for animal abuse. You take horsemanship advise from a kids book!

  • what???? Talk to the Bureau of Land Management which deals with wild horses. Tke that for a kid's book.

  • no look it up. Put it in google. The man is a fraud and a loser.

  • he is not!!!!!!!!!!!!have you ever been to one of his clinics? Huh?

  • I don't need to the fucker almost got me killed. I know how to read horse psychology its ok if you don't care about your horses that much. I don't blame you stupid people are doomed to do stupid things.

  • i cant't even argue with you anymore. It's useless. Obviously you don't know anything about horse phscology and I don't need your bad language to prove me wrong. He knows a lot more about horse phscology than u.

  • what about the proof that he followed a wild horse around for days (non-predator like) until it finally joined up with it. Then when he released it into the wild it came back to him?

  • ur not even worth it. I won't spend one more minute on u.

  • well what about you? you might find something talking about monty being a liar and decide to stick to it. and you might say that more then one article says he's a liar etc, well there's also more then one book talking about join-up (the man who listens to horses, the book by chris irwin, heartland...) so don't get mad at other ppl b/c you think they read just ONE thing cause same could be said about you.

  • what are you talking about. I've read all the books by Monty and all the books on Join up. It's a sucky program. Using a haalter that tightens on the face? How sick are you people? I've read most my Clinton Anderson and Denies Reis I have ALL the Parelli equpiment even liberty and horse behavior. Don't tell me I havn't researched and read enough. I've studied in depth psychology for 3 years.

  • meh. good for you.

  • you pointed it out stupid

  • what'd i point out??

  • the reading. Listen I'm tiered and in pain from moving and not in a good mood I'm obviously not getting anywhere with you. I get on here when I have bad days to bitch I don't really care any more

  • Haha! You idiot! You just sit around on your fat arse looking on Youtube so you can criticize great people who could do way better things with horses then YOU could ever do!All because you had ONE accident! So why dont you just shut your fat gob.

  • i am talking about BlazingAva by the way.

  • I'm out with my horses five hours a day so don't talk about my fat ass bitch. I can do waaay more than Monty can.

  • Well if you can do "waaay more" than monty can do why aren't you on TV or somwhere on the globe teaching people and doing demonstartions or getting interviews then?

  • Not that I believe you about Monty but too bad you survived Ava...you are a troll and a waste of oxygen.

  • Corrections. YOU almost got yourself killed, if you tried to join-up with your horses before you knew what you were doing.

  • yer that wuld be gud. but i find it hard 2 believe that. i guess maybe if its true. well done

  • He actually did do it in an open area. He followed a wild horse for days, and in the end, he joined up with it. Then later, when he tried to release the horse, the horse chose to return to Monty.

  • tell that to BlazingAva.

  • i totaly agree with sky dancer. im a parelli person and it makes sense.

i do not believe in monty roberts and his methods at all. and i also agree.

id like to see monty try this in an open area. pftt good luck with that

  • Hello fello savvy member! finally some one with some horse sence that only sees this predetor for that.

  • I don't know what to believe, is he a fraudulent money-grabbing shitsack or is he really good and his books are worth a read

  • his books really are ery good. i reccomend them to everyone.

  • I believe they are weighted boots. Used in gaited horses like tenessee(sp) walkers to achieve that HUGE leg movement in the front. Once weights taken off the horse steps like its stepping over a log every step/

  • oooooh ya! thats a Tennesee walker! talk about the caddillac of horses! aand yes that is what they (the boots) are used for

  • I'd like to see him try this approach with a horse that isn't trapped in a pen.

  • I don't buy what he's saying at all. It looks pretty simple to me. When you face it with your "shoulders squared", looking directly at it with your stereoscopic eyes, you're behaving like a predator. When you don't face it, you're not. When the horse was "throwing his nose", it looks to me like it was realizing that there was no escape and was about to give up running and considering fighting. Personally,I think it's kind of mean to trap a horse and scare it like that.

  • actually he has...the documentary of Shy Boy the horse that was brought in from the wild

  • He has....He had him following him around in 8 minutes, It is on one of his videos.

  • the horse hasnt got a problem with trottin he is joggin i think lol x

  • actually that is a tennessee walking horse. they are 5 gaited and do the flatwalk and runing walk instead of trott.

  • That horse has such fluid movement!

  • what do you guys think about Bach Flower remedies? please give me your opinions.

  • I've seen it work with cats and have heard it works with dogs but don't know about horses.

  • these methodes are some of the only ones that horses understand. join up, in other words, is 'playing horse'. i fully agree with monty roberts and chris irwin, and they have my utmost respect.

  • that horse is stunning and monty is an amazing horseman

  • I think this man is amzing i agree with the comment below, and i'm goin to see him on the 10th!

  • I believe he is tuned into and can read the body language of the horse. He establishes a bond with the animal, and mends relationships that have been sorely broken by misguided humans.

  • beautiful horse!

  • i've seen tn walkers before some are beautful but what i never liked is soem fo teh sharp inclined booits that some trainers put on the horses :S. whats on this horses front hooves?

  • It looks like the horse has a problem trotting.

    I like Monty's methods, though.

  • The horse is a Tennessee walker, and therefore, gaited. It performs the flat walk and running walk instead of a trot. The flat & running walks are four-beat gaits (same footfall pattern and timing as the walk; just faster & more animated), whereas the trot is a two-beat gait. The horse doesn't have any problems performing his gait. =]

  • I broke in 15 young horses last year - and none of them bucked - I removed the fear factor first. I don't have a round pen, in fact the smallest area to work them available to me is a 3 acre paddock. 2 of the horses took 6 months to catch. I'm still on the fence as to what Mr Robers is up to and wether his methods are cruel or not, but the bucking strap and the dually halter are not on my shopping list.

  • Good or bad it is NON VIOLENCE.Actually you are becoming at least a half Horse inside the round pen therefore the horse has no fear of you because you are signaling to the Horse as a Horse. There is no pressure what so ever on the Horse so how the Horse could be punished , For a flight animal if there is a small act of violence the Horse will see you as predator and himself/herself food on the table so how could he/she Join Up or Follow Up with a predator?

    With Regards,

    Hassan.

  • I respect different opinions on the padding issue, but the horse IS gaited. That doesn't mean he's been abused. His gait is natural (enhanced, but natural), so it's not something he's doing out of abuse.

  • What a terrible condition this horse is in! Look at his hoofes? Is this a so called "gaiting horse"? The horse is beautiful but it has been abused I can tell by his trot. Poor thing!

I don't like how some people treat their gaithorses! They'll do everything to make the horse lifts its legs. Its pathetic!

Such training as that is forbidden in Norway:)

  • hoofboots?!

  • That's a Tennessee Walking Horse. They don't trot!

  • I love this horse! I have been up close with him and petted him.

  • No, they stay on them like shoes. The owners may decide to take their horse off the pads and put them back on later (for instance, some people probably take them off for the winter so their horse can be turned out), but it's not something that they put on for a few hours and then remove.

The biggest reason is consistency. They need to practice on the pads for the shows. It takes adjustment. You can't just pop 'em on and expect the horse to perform well.

  • So... are these horseowners not aware of the fact that a few extra oz makes a huge diffrence? (even a thicker shoe makes a diffrence).

And that you never should work a horse with weights longer that for a training session (about 30 min)? And to have weights a whole day, and further a whole year, is very dangerus for the horse, and might strain the hroses muscles to injury?

  • I wonder something. Why does the horse has the weights (or what it is) on his fronthoofs?

  • He is a padded Tennessee walker. (He was a World Grand Champion several years ago.) It's just the type of 'shoes' he has. That's a whole different discussion itself. lol.

  • I thought those kind of shoes was added to the horse when needed, and not on the hrose 24h/day?

  • horses dot suite101 dot com slash article.cfm slash monty_roberts -- The author, a horse trainer, says: In fact, the more you really study the language of horses, the more you come to understand that what is taking place in the pen is yet another way of breaking horses, of making them give up. It has nothing to do with partnership or friendship with a horse.

  • Duane Isaacson: When the horse drops his head and begins to lick and chew, Mr. Roberts says the horse is negotiating a contract with the human in the center of the pen. And you might believe this if you go by what Monty says. But, he either does not know what is really happening, or he is simply lying.

  • Duane Isaacson: In fact, the horse is in an extremely stressful situation. It is being driven away, chased by a predator, with no possibility of flight or escape. Dropping the head and licking and chewing are attempts to alleviate stress.

  • You are very wrong about alleviating stress. I am a trainer and that means they are excepting it and they are understanding. Watch your horses in the pasture and stop being an dork and saying things you don't know.

  • Yawn and licking is most known as a sign for that a horse is thinking. That does not mean that there might be other situations where a horse licks, chew or yawns.

I think it would be intressting to read the literature that Duane Isaacson found this information in. =)

  • i join up all the time-that horse was very unsure of humans-it shows this in the way it plunged downwards at the beginning, and then when it took a while deciding on whether to join up or not. Good job, though!

  • I saw him last night in Kent :D It was amazing

the join up there worked alot better!

    He is awesome <3

He said almost the same thing! Haha

  • monty roberts rocks! I've used his method and effectivley "started" my mate's young bay stallion. I've read all his books and he rocks! thanks so much for uploading this! who here has met him? I so envy you.

  • I trained with Monty for 6 months..I didnt Join up with him but I learnt a lot!

  • he did this 2 mi horse and loaded him @ west wilts ode. he iz amazin!!!

  • To me, the horse looks uncomfortable being made to round pen with those weighted feet and it bothers me that the audience laughs from time to time.

  • The audience laughed at things Monty said, not at the join-up process. Monty was making some witty comments, so I don't see a problem with a little laughter? Maybe us people in the audience found it amusing that he said "The next signal you'll see is JFK trying to make the circle smaller" and about 2 seconds later, JFK's circle shrank dramatically. The laughter was about things like that NOT about the join-up method, the horse, etc.

  • I understand that, but still find it insensitive. I also think it was poor judgement by MR to accept this horse for his demonstration animal.

  • The audience laghs because monty's making jokes - not at the horses expence - i think this guy is totally amazing, im halfway through hid biography at the moment!

  • david-castro(dot)com(dot)ar

    Under articles : round penning

  • o well done u found an OPINIONATED article... try the facts Monty has gone out into the wild where as far as every creature on earth knows there are no round pens... and proven that join up works by completing the process with several different horses. Most notably was Shy Boy... and if u say he was just trying not to be hurt, well eventually Monty re released him into the wild to see which family Shy Boy wanted to be with, he returned to Monty on his own

  • yes elvenarcher and the vidio is on utube...there are 4 parts ...how he trained shy boy and the year that followed...awesome watching

  • this horse is like punished in the horse language.. why... he does not deserve it... moreover in nature the horse can flee... here not.

  • How on earth is this horse being punish shania? He's being shown that Monty is a gd herd leader and when he comes in from the circle he's showing he'd rather be with monty than running away. He show's he's not scared of monty when he starts licking and chewing as it suggest's the horse is eating and not bothered by what Monty is doing. I think that's what it is anyway, read his manuals et you'll see!

  • It's marketing language in his book, it's his comprehension and traduction of the horse but it's not the truth ! Start looking for and understand why the horse react like that, and you will know why JU is bad for horses...

  • Are you stupid? Yeah, and breathing is bad for people.

    Yeah, no.

Join-up works, is great, and does nothing but good with the horse. How could you POSSIBLY think that it is BAD for a horse? Have you ever even touched one before? Thats just stupid for you to say.

  • Apparently in US you don't have people scientist specialised in horse ethology...

THat's a pitty for horses who will have to support this treatment for still long...

But who cares... as far as you get the result, you don't really want to know the true reason that make it happen !

  • i'm sry just in the US?! Monty has taken his methods all over the world and proven they work. He has worked with the Queen of England and her personal horses... as well as places like iceland and italy. do ur research before you complain His methods are perfect, they build trust between horses and humans, this could save so many horses lives. U r really retarded if u think this method is bad.

  • I will not say you're retarded but certainly not informed and have only one version of fact. Have a look at this site :

  • Join-up works! it's GREAT ;)

  • you are definitely not a horse person...nothing else to say to you

  • Pushing the horse to maximum stress and getting him close to the pression, with no possibility to flee makes dangereous damage in the horse nervous system... This is a non sense... this is an extreme psychological violence :-(

  • it's just the language of the horse. the horse see him just like a leader.. in nature, the horse that does something wrong will be replace like that. monty just doing the same thing.. read the book, you'll understand.

  • Not much different than being on the traditional lounge line except when the horse makes the gestures to stop, that he is willing to "nagotiate", the pressure is removed and the horse is allowed to respond. This is one of the mosst non violent, horse intelligent ways a horse can be trained. You gotta experience it. Amazing results. The horse owes a great deal to this man. HE NEVER USES A WHIP, the single most purchased horse item.

  • "HE NEVER USES A WHIP, the single most purchased horse item." May we see your data that proves this? A longe whip is merely for giving cues, as an extension of one's arm.

  • she didn't say he used a whip lol, she said The horse owes a great deal to this man. HE NEVER USES A WHIP, the single most purchased horse item. hehe. Don't you just think that Monty's brill xD

  • Do you suggest sacking out a horse to break it in? Because that is violance, try reading his autobiography and you may understand...

  • ...Well actually if you would have actually READ his books (in particular the man who listens to horses) you would know that he DOESN'T sack out horses! It was his cruel father that would, and this is why Monty has adapted his new CRUEL FREE method of training/starting... He has taken something that is natural for a horse to understand (instead of chains and ropes), the horse doesn't see this as punishment but rather what it can do to earn respect... Wake up and actually read the book...

  • I was there too and it was total communication in the horse's own language...gestures, like signing for the deaf.

  • Monty is just absolutely amazing. I admire his work very much. What a genius:)

  • natural horsemanship with a padded walking horse. There's irony for ya!

  • what an interesting thought...i was kinda thinkn the same thing.dont get me wrong i absolutely love monty i just dont necessarily agree with the padded shoes.then again that is just my opinion:)
