The Back to the Future, "doc's house" is a land mark, that is why it is open to public. In the film, only the exterior of the house have been used. The director of the movie decided not to use the inside (although the owners of the house let them), because film crew could damage the house (lighting, cables, etc.) So the inside of the house was never used in the movie.
Doc's house in back to the future is open for tours because it Pasadena historical landmark. It is a Greene and Greene designed Craftsman style called The Gamble House...as in Proctor & Gamble.
