Wow... in an age where the world grows smaller and we live in a global community, your politically incorrect attitude embarrasses the rest of us in the US. Firstly, the 'ice scraper' is called a bachi and it is the tool used to play the shamisen (NOT an out of tune Asian guitar)
I am ashamed that you are I are in the same genus, not to mention the same species.
You sad fat no life nerd just get over it you will NEVER be as cool as Kevin Kmetz or Mike penny so deal with it you whiny girl and the Well INTUNED instrument is call the shamisen you jack ass
This video is hilarious. The poor guy is probably mad because Kevin is an awesome shamisen player. What can the producer of this video do? If he is so keen on criticizing Kevin, I'd like to see him play the Shamisen.
First of all it is not a guitar and it is not out of tune. It is a Shamisen. Pick up a book and read before you comment. If you don't like books you could go look up Shamisen on wikipedia.
Hey! cool. Thanks for the review! No matter what people say you are definately dedicated to sharing your opinion! I actually just might take your advice and shoot this vid again standing up! Watched a bunch of your other vids. Got kinda addicting after a while in a strange sort of way. Anyway thanks for your time!
@fiddlefella It's good to add some food for thought to the discussion fiddlefella, but playing the shamisen for 4 years doesn't automatically qualify you to discuss youtube videos at the level of toddunt.
I don't think any amount of shamisen practice can give you insight into the musician's mind enough to say that he wasn't trying to look like Yoda.
Oh, of course. Playing for four years doesn't qualify me in any way. However, he did express some confusion on why he, for example, used an "ice scraper" or large tuning pegs. And I just happen to know that both of those things are normal for the shamisen. Yes, for western instruments, a small plectrum is used, so that big pick seem weird. But that "ice scraper" is *the* right pick to use. I simply clarified that, as I knew it and he didn't. Not that there's anything wrong with that. ;-)
Kevin may have been sitting that way to look like Yoda for all I know. But with my admittedly limited knowledge of the shamisen, I speculate he wasn't. (but hey, if he did, kudos for the inside joke!) Because not only is he sitting that way when he is playing other pieces (that aren't Star Wars related), most all Japanese music musicians sit that way when performing. It's more common to sit that way than to stand.
That's what makes me think he wasn't trying to look like Yoda. But whatevs. ;-)
Finally. Yes. Those are some big tuning pegs, aren't they! But indeed, those thick tuning pegs are always used for tsugaru shamisen (the big-size model of shamisen). In fact, it's one of the easiest ways to spot a tsugaru shamisen apart from the other models (which have thinner pegs).
Generally they are colored black or white, but now clear and colored acrylic are made for modern "hip" players.
So yes. He is aware of the pegs' thick size, and that all tsugaru shamisens have those tuning pegs.
The "ice scraper" he was using is called a "bachi" which is *the* proper plectrum for the shamisen (Japanese guitar). They are made from tortoise shell, so it's not like he bought it at Home Depot. ;-) Yes, it's a glorified putty knife, but it is the correct plectrum.
Second, The way he was sitting is "seiza" which is a formal Japanese sitting position. He's not trying to look like Yoda. I personally find playing the shamisen much easier from seiza than standing.
Apparently, when you said you saw him pick up the hammer and you got worried, I just have to say this...You sir, have no sense of humor. .-.

But I've only been playing shamisen for 4 years, so what do I know? ;-)
All the best. :-)
