I think the Rehearsal Space interview from about 2 years ago clears this up nicely, it did for me at least. In it he says that Andrew WK is the sort of person that he would be, an exaggeration of himself, and the person that he could be if he had the chance, and that chance is the persona of Andrew WK.

I was in a show with Andrew last night in the Village at Joe's Pub. He is very real and very amazing. The show was a tribute to Baby Dee. Andrew was awesome! So was everyone else I met!!

What he said at the press conference sounded like a joke, and the conspiracy theorists all ran with it for the sake of running with it. A lot like how the Paul is Dead rumors came up and how some people still believe Paul is dead.
You can't change these people's opinions because they don't want them changed, so what is the point in arguing whether he's real or not.
Also, he is a huge troll and is trolling all of them right now.

I think the Rehearsal Space interview from about 2 years ago clears this up nicely, it did for me at least. In it he says that Andrew WK is the sort of person that he would be, an exaggeration of himself, and the person that he could be if he had the chance, and that chance is the persona of Andrew WK.

Andrew W.K. is both a man, the one speaking in this video, and a stage persona. The stage persona is an exaggerated version of the man. Andrew W.K. won the audition because of who he is as a man and his potential for the stage. Period.

I was in a show with Andrew last night in the Village at Joe's Pub. He is very real and very amazing. The show was a tribute to Baby Dee. Andrew was awesome! So was everyone else I met!!

Andrew is real. He got together with this group of people who call them selves "Steev Mike". There was a contract. It stated for Andrew to be the ultimate frontman. He later broke his contract and for many years he tried to get around it and finaly got a record lable. Now those people recently took it away. He's really what he claims to be. He's vary much the same on stage and off. He plays music and writes his own songs if not by himself then with other people. That's all anyone needs to know.

@jramos83084 No, he actually sings. Granted on the album side of things it's really produced, but you'll have that with any studio recording. If you see him live though, it's pretty obvious that he's the one singing.
