Goodbye my lady. You wrote my life as though you were watching over my shoulder.
Only one other writer, Alannis Morissette, has shown the same combination of insight and courage to be brutally and starkly honest with no apparent concern for the criticisms and personal consequences that this forthrightness might bring to each woman, both privately and publicly. We've lost one of the truly unique - I just found out, so today she has my tears as I listen.
@MrSpexis. I bet I saw you there a few times on Saturday nights through all the cigarette smoke up by the stage! LOL. Those really WERE the good old days!
I first heard this song by a singer named Andi Cahill in the cabaret part of a downtown Chicago bar called The Trip around 1974. It was quite a crowd favorite, and we all sang along with the chorus at the end, which the band lengthened considerably and repeatedly as we swilled down those Saturday night drinks and lustily joined in! This version brings back a lot of old memories. Thanks.
@realpurpleplay WOWZERZ!!! Ran across this post and had a flash back to all those Saturday nights at the Trip with Sam Hill & Andi Cahill. Can't get her entire repertoire of songs (sets) out of my head now!
Extraordinary. I will be fifty next month. Today was the first time I heard this. Amazing song. She moves straight up there (for me) with Janis Ian and Natalie Merchant on the basis of this one song. Now working through others on here.
I was a huge fan of hers back when I was in college in the early 70s. What a sudden twist: "it's just the night cuts through me like a knife, would you care to stay a while and save my life." But she hints at her vulnerability earlier too when she says "will you come back?" Her music is extraordinary. Her dark side probably comes from that creep of an ex hubby, Andre Previn, playing with her mind. Why is Anne Sophie Mutter now married to that old prick?
Amazing how she tosses out lyrics! A tight stream of conversation flow that's a wild ride for a 4 minute song. My favorite lyric "I papered that wall myself".
