when/how did the red lantern corps come to be? i havent ever seen a movie/show/comic with any red corps members. is it a real thing in DC?

A rouge guardian did something (can't remember what happened exactly) to make the Manhunters destroy the population of a planet on sector 666. An alien named Atrocitus was the survivor of the planet & sweared revenge on The Guardians and built up rage. There, The Red Lantern Corp was made.

@RandomNonsense2K8 not quite true. the lanterns are selected by hate, and powered by rage. their blood doesn't power the ring, it gets replaced by the ring(this is why trying to remove the ring through any means other than Mogo or a blue lantern will kill them)

Their powers aren't very established, similar, but different of the Green Lanterns. Principaly, until I saw, they attack coughing a lethal sustance like blood, but just that. Maybe or not they have more powers.

A detail: if you get out your red ring, you die.

They have not a side, good or evil, properly. Ysmault, the first Red Lantern and creator of his Corps., thinks 'the rage' must rules the universe to brings order in this. It's him philosophy (and his powers 'feed' from the same rage).

1. Ysmault is the home planet where Atrocitus,the first RLC member,formed the core from the blood of the remaining four Inversions and using magical blood rituals.

2.The substance is a napalm-like plasma that is used to replace the wearer's blood upon induction into the RLC. It can also be projected through the mouth,which is why in the pics you see what looks like RLC members vomiting up blood. It's actually the red energy being used as a projectile.
