I grew up there and witnessed the devestation of the 67 riots. I saw tanks and National Guard troops rolling down Livernois Ave. I heard gun shots of the snipers shooting at the firemen when they were trying to put out the fires, saw the devasation of my neighbor's business burned to the ground and how the insurance companies wouldnt pay for the damages because of the "riot clause" in their polices. Detroit is my home town but I haven't been there since I left ,that was a good 9 years ago. My brothers told me that Detroit is terrible ,it should be called destroit now. None the less, it is frustrating to see what a mess the city is (although relatively speaking it has gotten better on the humanity aspect). @luckylove671 I live in Oakland County, too buddy, and I've been in Detroit so often for sporting events and tours. It's not a hell hole. It's the most beautiful ruin in America. It is easily the city with the most pride and personality in the country. And FYI, Oakland County isn't Detroit. There is only one Detroit, and it has more grandeur and beauty than whatever pit you live in.

I ended up spending a weekend alone in Detroit (quite randomely) and having travelled to many cities round the world, I would have to say that Detroit was one of the friendliest and most welcoming I have every visited... Still very sad to see it on it's knees though...
1st of all I just want to say I was happy to see that u shot a wide variety of Detroit; museums, theatres, art sculptures & skyscrapers like the amazing Renaissance Center. You also have shown us some of the declining neighborhoods - even a brief shot of the Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects. I'm from Philly and hear similar negative comments from my friends consistently. Both of our cities share these common issues, so kudos to you for showing us the real Detroit. I'd love to visit someday.
Detroit is a great city, like most cities we have pockets where the crime rate is very low, and would be the ideal place to raise your children. Right now we as a city are going through a hardship (that has lasted roughly 20 years) as we keep failing to elect the right officials. I am an Irish Urban Planning student in Scotland. I find no city more interesting than Detroit and I have never even been there. I have been in Michigan when I was a child though. I remember being told about "bad" Detoit! When I read about the place though I feel something for it. I can't explain it! As a Town Planner I would love to work there and contribute to its regeneration!

I've watched a few of these Detroit videos and I barely recognize anything. The people mover is after my time as is Ford field and Comerica park. I never lived in the run down areas. It was good to see The Thinker and The Spirit of Detroit.

This sure brings up some strong negative emotions of a once, very livable city. This is what happens when an uneducated population kept voting in terribly corrupt mayors and city council members. Corporate greed cannot be ignored either...it all started with Motown Records leaving, then the sports teams (Lions & Pistons) gave up...ugh..sad!!

Where home to more then just the auto capital of the world. Without the destruction of war or catastrophic natural disasters, rebuilding is extremely difficult.
Spain had to recover from wars in order to embrace olive growing and build an industry around it's culture
Detroit is a lot younger than Spain's major cities and must learn who we are without the support of massive businesses.

I ended up spending a weekend alone in Detroit (quite randomely) and having travelled to many cities round the world, I would have to say that Detroit was one of the friendliest and most welcoming I have every visited... Still very sad to see it on it's knees though...

1st of all I just want to say I was happy to see that u shot a wide variety of Detroit; museums, theatres, art sculptures & skyscrapers like the amazing Renaissance Center. You also have shown us some of the declining neighborhoods - even a brief shot of the Brewster-Douglass Housing Projects. I'm from Philly and hear similar negative comments from my friends consistently. Both of our cities share these common issues, so kudos to you for showing us the real Detroit. I'd love to visit someday.

Detroit is a great city, like most cities we have pockets where the crime rate is very low, and would be the ideal place to raise your children. Right now we as a city are going through a hardship (that has lasted roughly 20 years) as we keep failing to elect the right officials. We have gang problems, which like most cities, there is no end in sight. But overall everyone from Detroit is proud to say that it's their city. Also, yes we have some area's that have been abandoned,

I am an Irish Urban Planning student in Scotland. I find no city more interesting than Detroit and I have never even been there. I have been in Michigan when I was a child though. I remember being told about "bad" Detoit! When I read about the place though I feel something for it. I can't explain it! As a Town Planner I would love to work there and contribute to its regeneration!
