The song was played through the tube at low speed, allowing the notes (and thus the flames) time to become visible. After the whole thing was shot, they sped up the video footage to match the original speed of the song.

I really doubt it. visually it would look the same no matter how slowly you filmed it. the high speed camera technique is for slowing film down and not losing frame rate, not speeding it back up.

Fire does not flare up cleanly when you rapidly adjust the fuel source. Thus, slowly adjust the fuel source, and speed up the resulting capture to match the original tempo. Easy.
