Video is not in sync with audio. At 0:32, George Diller is saying "0, and liftoff...!", and in the video they've only just begun to shake. They should have begun shaking when you heard the whoosh of the 3 main engines at 0:25, and then the violent shudder the crew experiences at 0:37 is what should have occurred when Diller said "0 and liftoff..." cuz that's when the solid rocket boosters ignite and that's the REAL moment of liftoff. (main engines light 6.6 seconds b4 actual liftoff)
I Love Rex Walheim's expressions during this! So animated! (I'd be doing the same!) Wish we could see Cmdr Ferguson in shot. Neat that Sandy Magnus was first to get out of helmet, out of her seat, ready to rock n roll! What a great crew!
I like how at @11:15 Rex pulls a drink out to enjoy on the ride!! 8 1/2 minute ride into space...Let's have a toast!! (I wonder what he had in there?!?) OH...and the alien full body scan that starts at @12:03!
@Hypershad12 HUH-UH!!! But really...I just watched it again, and it surprises me how NONE of the astronauts seem to take notice of that "sunlight" streaming through the windows the entire time of the scan! ALIENS EXIST!
If anybody needs to know a good description of what it feels like to be inside a launching shuttle - there ain't no words, just look at Rex Walheim's face at the moment of SRB ignition...
At 3:10 when the commander of Atlantis says 'Atlantis two engine tau' is he referring to the two SRB's seperation, or does it refer to the ignition of two Orbital Maneuvring system OMS engines?
@marmaladekamikaze He's saying "2 engine TAL" TAL is Transoceanic Abort Landing. That means if they lose and engine, they can make it across the Atlantic and make an emergency landing.
The big jolt the astronauts get in the video is SRB ignition. In this video the jolt happens as the shuttle is clearing the tower. The audio is 5-6 secs ahead of the video.
Other than that, it's sweet to always see them during ascent. :P

Rex is smiling from ear to ear... he's thoroughly enjoying this ride considering this is the last and final shuttle launch.

@desfees Sandy is the first one out because the first job of the crew is to grab the video camera from the middeck and film the ET floating away.

@eezyrider65 @12:03 I think that it's the sunlight coming through the main windows.

@marmaladekamikaze I don't think so. Look at the way the astronaut move after 3:10. That's a pretty good chance the SRB's are still operating.
JerryGiesler09 6 months ago
@JerryGiesler09 The SRBs separate at 02:40 in the video, Also easy to tell as it's when the crew can open up their visors.
