Beautiful tenor voices during the 60's folkie era were a dime a dozen, but somehow Buckley's stood out as did his life, which was cut short tragically at 28 yrs old.
@stevekon11 'I find myself searching...for days when we smiled...and the hours than ran wild... with the magic of our eyes...and sometimes I wonder... just for awhile...will you ever... remember me' I was a fan of Tim Buckley from the time his first album came out. I'll NEVER FORGET Tim Buckley and I'll forever miss those days that ran wild.
Can you picture this--Jeff Buckley singing at a tribute memorial for his estranged father--I Never Asked to be Your Mountain and then, this song,a cappella..Chills... This is according to the website Kingdom for a Kiss which has a lot of info about Jeff.
Kings dont lead their people into battle. i think joan of arc was a man. of course and fought in the heat of battle. With the spirit of god i cannot die. Each death stroke.

I was watching Dear America: Letter Home from Vietnam in class today, & a scene with this song came on that made my heart ache. I had to find this song
I first heard this song in the movie Coming Home. I had to get the Tim Buckley album Goodbye and Hello right after. A beautiful, poignant work by an amazingly gifted artist that, like so many, we lost too soon.
Since it was impossible to find a copy of it in Italy I've just got "Coming home" from GB. I hadn't seen that movie for ages, great film, great soundtrack and an incredibly moving story
whats all this military talk? this song is just a love song. its about someone who got dumped and is watching his former lover move on. and hes longing for those days of blah blah mushy gushy what have you
@hotvision The Vietnam / military thing is possibly because many people, including myself, first heard this tune (and its opening line "Once I was a soldier") on the TV documentary "Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam". It's played against the backdrop of the description of a young US marine being killed near Khe Sahn (I recall; RIP...). It moved me. But I understand now that Tim Buckley wrote this beautiful song as first and foremost a love song. And what a beautiful love song it is.
It's just too bad, with all the protests that went on against Vietnam, that no one listened, and here we are again, only there is a black out on the number dead, and the media to show war info, so we have no anti-war protests as we did during Vietnam. It those old men in Congress, House and Senate had to fight, there would be different attempts at solutions rather than maiming and ruining our -- and other country's young men and women.
What a touching song...just discovered TB recently and his son, Jeff...actually just yesterday..how did he elude me all these years?....heard his name ....maybe heard a song didn't know it was him...needed to hear this now
@lpride1 you can also hear this at the end of the movie "Coming Home" from the 70's - Jane Fonda & Jon Voight,, I heard it then & still after all this time it still chills me to the core, I love it
if our effen congress had taken seriously Ho's pleas for our political help in 1945 to gain independence from France after the japs were run out of Viet Nam, our history there would've been so very different. Such a waste of people on all sides. I'm a vet and missed that war by a hair. I had friends there and served with haunted vets shortly after the war. Even today the entire congress and senate should be fired for it's arrogant elitism in world affairs and here at home
This genuine beauty translated into words... Sheer talent in a soul that breathes art. We should all be thankful for having music of this caliber in our world!
I was young during this time and lived in Washington DC, and we marched and protested, but what no one understood was....we hated the war...NOT the warrior.
If Kennedy had lived, America would not have fought a Vietnam War. He was going to pull out our advisers in 1963 just before his assassination. Buckley's song is a lasting and haunting memorial that never fails to stir my emotions.

once you were a soldier ,,, sorry but you did not fight and die for me. maybe you were a hunter who brought home fresh meat for me .. again sorry, i am VEGAN and ANTI-WAR! blame your government and their quest for global domination, it was not at my request, nor people like me. you were all cannon-fodder, not of importance. this is politics. rest in peace guys, you died for nothing and that is heart-breaking!!!
@mishka1305 You are correct in your passion but being disrespectful is futile. I was in the militay and my father was a WWII (Battle of the Bulge). Freedom is not free and I know it is easy to go against those who have no military experinence
or familily members who sacrificed for their country. to understand. From my experience, I 0acn tell you that this song is a soldier's lonely thoughts of loved ones and his love.
@carolinekao2008 - no, my grandfather and his father and many more relatives fought the nazis and DIED for my freedom! btw, i wasn't being disrespectful in my last comments, i just abhor the futility of war and of our so-called "rulers" eagerness to send our young lads into these fucking conflicts, many of which have nothing to do with us!
@Agitator83 What branch of the Military were you? I was in this era and you're correct. It is a soldier's lament! The military teaches us to be one but in those lonely momment we think of ourselves and wonder if our sacrifices are valid and understood by those who have no idea what we have experienced. Such a shame that our Viet Nam vets were treated so badly and forgotten!

Once I was a lover and I searched behind your eyes for you
and soon there'll be another to tell you I was just a lie
and though you have forgotten all of our rubbish dreams I find myself searching
through the ashes of our ruins for the days when we smiled and the hours that ran wild with the magic of our eyes and the silence of our words.
Sometimes I wonder just for a while...
Will you ever remember me ?
