Jo Jones was so ahead of his time. all his technique and musicality rolled up into this beautiful sound on the instrument. i wish he was still alive so I could study with him. what a beast!!!
also, check out the solo with the coleman hawkins quintet. he was playing all that chris dave/eric harland stuff 60 years ago.
I think that (young) drum student might be Donald bailey who played with Jimmy smith etc.Not sure though, anyone know?Papa joe is one of my heroe's.Everyone playing drums today seriously owes alot of thanks to this man.
Papa Jo...the great. It's good to see the humility of the great Gene Krupa. I learned later in my years that Gene Krupa admired a lot of Black drummers like Cozy Cole, Sonny Payne, Loniel Hampton, etc. But because of how things are in America we only hear about the greatness of Mr. RIch and Mr. Krupa. It's good to see Papa Jo Jones being recognized.
The humility of Mr. Krupa....this documentary was flawed by the idioticaly racist comments of the late Humphrey Lyttleton..jeez he had and most of those college educated cretins had such a grudge about Krupa..that man was a drum genius..second to none.
Look at all those beautiful drums in Ippolito's drum shop. They are now vintage but at the time they were just being sold as brand new. I wish I had a time machine.
That's not Tony Williams, the first student? I guess he would have been older by the time stop-sign Gretsch drums existed. this is the most amazing drum video I've seen, perhaps...........(well, that's hard to quantify of course)
Dude, you're killing me with how fortunate you were to have had a session with him - and how you knew Gene Krupa personally (as you told me in your personal messages to me) - that's really great. I should get to know you better and you can tell me all the stories.
What's the name of the tune they play at 5:23? It's been killing me to know!!
