It is a fact that Irish Ballads are sung BEAUTIFULLY by great Irish singers.with 'angelic' voices,however if a Ballad is about telling a Story, and someone with Mark Knopfler's voice is telling it, I say I would easily be touched for he is singing it from the heart. and that's good enough for me, and so long as it makes the listener's hair stand on end, THAT'S MAGICAL.'comparing' between Knopfler and 'Irish Balladeers'becomes an irrelevancy.Each human heart interprets love in its own unique way.
Anyone who knows anything about Irish ballads will know that this is a very poor attempt. No heart or emotion for probably Ireland's greatest love song.
Has anyone heard Tom Murphy from Slieverue sing this. His version is brilliant but they exist only in my memory or a lucky few other people ; no recordings.. Lucky people in Waterford and Kikkenny
@mick23belfast Well, I like Luke Kelly's vesion too, if that's what you're comparing it to. Just interesting how different a song can sound in the hands of another artist. Ever heard Peter Rowan's take on it? Warning: I gather your tastes in music aren't exactly catholic, so your hair might catch fire. Anyway, I guess we can agree it's a great song.
@caoimhc Well, they are pretty different, that's true, nevertheless, Knopfler's versions sounds very romantic too. His singing may be a bit...special, but the instruments are really making it gliding... like a falling leaf...

I think that Mark Knopfler really capture the bitterness of the song. Very beautiful and emotional.

@canqueteau
It is a traditional Irish song. Words by Patrick Kavanagh, one of the best Irish poets.
