I have an 82 yamaha xt 550 that I bought and I am trying to get it running. Sometimes the kick start is really hard to push down and other times it is really easy. I managed to get 70 psi with a compression test at its best when it needs at least 125. That is obscenely low. Do you have any ideas because I don't.
cool vid thanks max. I'm currently renovating an old bike trailer and one day hundreds of years from now I might finish it and then I might just go buy that knackered honda cub I've been drooling over for weeks and blow it up with the first flick of the starter. Talk about slow progress. I might even put a vid on here myself if i ever work up enough c,c,c,courage - maybe a how-to on how to lift a nut safely... or self mockery :)
@shirlemyj Usually its just part of regular maintenance. Also listen for valve chatter, low compression, smoke esp on startup, irregular running, there are a bunch of possible symptoms
@mrmaxstorey You know it.. ;) I know I have to do it on my CB550 its just I am not looking forward to it. If it were a 2 cyclinder it would be eiser and I would have already done it.. ;)
Shims are great in that (theoretically), they don't go out of spec very often. I say "theoretically." If you have a high revving single with a sorry excuse for DOHC design (*cough*Kawasaki*cough*), then you are having to adjust it every 7.5k miles, minimum. Gah. Thank the good Lord there are only 4 valves.
As soon as I can get the money, this thing is getting new camshafts, valve work, porting, etc.
Great video, Max. I'm looking forward to watching you do a shim style valve adjust -- I've got a '95 Vulcan -- too bad we live so far away, since I'd drive to you to see how it's done.
@spelunkerd Sure thing man as soon as I do one I will post up a video. I know I need to replace the valve cover gasket on the suzukimatic... maybe I'll do the valves while I am in there
Thanks for the KZ440 vids! This is fantastic! Keep 'em coming!
