It's essentially trying to guess the password from a dictionary list. Not likely to work on servers that lock you out after a number of failed login attempts, especially if the dictionary contains thousands of words. You could try until the Sun burns to a cinder and still not succeed. If the system is designed to detect guessing attempts from an IP address and your IP address is added to a block list, well, you're never going to get in.

Hey, I dowloaded THC Hydra 5.8 with winrar and compileit. Then I opened cmd promt and tipe ./configure and it didnt work and I also try make, make install. hydra, but non of it didnt work. any idea what should I do? I run out of ideas. Thenk you for your help. I run windows Vista.

@faithlessaaa one V is one level of verbosity, the second is the next level. You don't have to use them. Adding that option makes the program display EVERYTHING it does, with as much info as possible. Leave them out if you don't care to see all of that.

first, you're an idiot since you obviously didn't watch the video. You can crack either the user, password, or BOTH.

Second, this works over a network (or the internet). You can't bruteforce that fast over tcp/ip so dictionary attacks are the only option.

They only way you could get someones myspace/socail site password would be either sniffing their login (assuming its plaintext), or with a keylogger. Or possibly if they have it saved somewhere. The fastest and easiest way would be to hit them with a monkey wrench and ask them for it.
