I used to have an '83 V-65, and all I can say is that it was pretty fast (although no where near as fast as my '01 ZX-9R). I never got a chance to run a V-MAX on it, but I did race my brother on his KZ-1000Z1R and took him by about 6-8 bike lengths. My bike was 100% stock where he had bigger carbs, ignition box, and V&H header.
They are both fun and in the late 80s early 90s we tore up the city on our V4s.. BUT.. the long rake and high center of gravity made the V65 less stable and harder to control when it got squirrly. Nonetheless, after smoking a tire off every 4-weeks, we still had tonnes of fun and many great memories. If Im not mistaken, our riding group had 6-Vmaxes and 3 V65s....
I have more preference for the magnas are more se pierde in addition the vmax is bigger as by 600 cubic centimetres k a magna as well k is a nonsense make them compete

@carcano38 every time i see someone saying this stuff i hope they'r those rare people who really die because of road accident. if motorist fails deadly 99% chance they'r hurt and no one else gets even scrach. if car driver or even worse truck driver fails there a LOT bigger chance to others get hurt or die. but those who do it on purposely normally choose the place where is minimal chance to others get hurt no matter what you'r driving.
if the v65 had a boost like the vmax, it would be a different story. i've had the v65 and i now have the 08 vmax. the magna handled better and was fast. the vmax is uncomfortable, poor brakes, poor handling. yet the motor makes up for it in spades. i like the v boost. it blows away almost all cars including rice boys. but that's all.

83-84 V-65's were the animal. 85 and up were neutered. My 84 with a re-jet and nothing else ran a best of 10:30 with my 200lb ass onboard. When the V-Max came out i figured they'd spank my V-65, but it never produced. That re-jet worked wonders and rarely did you see the backside of another bike. Bang the 65 all u want. The only thing Mr. Max did better was showroom brevity.
@Tarten46 Well, I re-jetted my 1994 VMAX and let me tell you It is faster than the V-65...I raced an 84 animal like you said, with a re-jet kit & spanked him. NO show room here! Oh! by the way my 94 is not like the 85 VMAX which was faster. I think maybe you've done more to the cycle than re-jet..and then 200 pds. added.. not happening, the math don't make sense.
Yeah, definitely looked like something wrong with the Magna. I owned an 85 V65 and it never took me that long to bounce through the gears in a full on race all the way through 5th is bang, bang, bang... This looked like the bike was struggling just to maintain RPM. Oh, if you hit 1000 over redline RPM, the bike shuts down. Nothing says HELLO when you are racing someone and the bike actually quits at redline! LOL
Both greeat bikes, and a true testament to the power that that 25 year old bike really had. In its day, nothing could catch it. I just sold my 84 V65,and it gave all but the fastest liter bikes a run for their money. Nice race though.
@InsanityHere ... duhhh... your 'second passenger' is a HELMET CAM... you're also insulting the owner/rider for accusing him of drag racing with a passenger aboard as well...
fyi.. V-Max 165hp... V65 115hp... clearly the Max will eat the Honda and s**t nuts and bolts
"Tune up your antique". The VMax is an antique. It's been nearly the same bike for 22 years until the 09's. Love them both, hope to have both in the stable.

i've owned both. didn't think the vmax would blow by the magna. the v65 i had was potent especially in 4th gear. no way the vmax would blow by me that fast. i now own an 07 vmax. the only thing good is the acceleration. forget handling, comfort and brakes. i like both bikes though. if the v65 had a boost system, now things would be different. also, if the magna was a 1200 like the vmax, it may not need the boost to beat the vmax. but both are legends.
@boywaimea thumbs up on giving both the v65 and the vmax. both are legends. i've rode them both. own the vmax. jus didn't like the feel of the magna. different strokes......
these are good bikes. I have a '84 V45 magna. Infact its the first bike i owned. its was easy to adapt to that bike from the 100cc's( thats right single cylinder 100cc's) i was used to. yet its quite fast. The best part is the look on the unassuming harley rider's face in a light to light race,And i am only a fat novice rider. sure lot of sport bikes are easily faster than my V45, but most people dont expect me to even offer any competition. @odmcarp You my friend are dilutional, need I remind you of the video here.. again! Wake up man..and smell the Exhaust! By the way all this w/o a 6th gear. Even w/o 6th gear VMAX's kick's the ass of V65 magna's & others w/more potential!
Nuff said... And don't let me get into the new VMAX's that's killing buza's, ninja's, honda's, Ducati's etc...
@odmcarp NOT true, I have VMAX and I lay it down like the crotch rockets do in cornering when racing... you just have to know how to ride. This bike is not for the faint of heart or shall I say not for novice/beginners or people w/no SKILLZ in riding.
Cool video and I'm really a fan of both bikes. I've got a 85 Sabre V65 & the red headed step child 85 700 Magna as a daily driver but soon to be sold for a down payment on my neighbor's neglected 89 Vmax (1200). 89!!! Almost too new for me. Muscle cruisers are their own sub-breed. Once you're hooked nothing else will do.
Isn't it amazing that a well tuned 26 year old V65 can hang with a 2007 VMax. Its a hard fact that a well tuned V65 can match speed with a VMax. I agree that the rider can make all the difference. The No-B.S. performance stats prove that these bikes are on a near equal footing. I love them both. No contest when it comes to the most bang for your buck.
@whiskeyfoxpix whats the year have to do with it? vmaxes didnt change power wise since they were created. and they were made for 22 years because they were bonafied bad ath.
@archetype891 You don't think its amazing that ANY 26 year old bike can keep up with a 2007 VMAX? I Love Em! Its a clear testemant to the power and engineering of the Honda. of course a well tuned 1986 VMAX might also be a force to contend with. Are there still a lot of them on the road? I honestly don't know, but I do know that the Honda V4 engines were built to last. There are lots of V65s still out there becuase people love them and Honda built them right. and Yes, the VMAX is Bad A#@
@whiskeyfoxpix the reason japan didnt make big bikes back then was because japan limited their CCs to 750. any 1000cc UJM that isnt a detuned cruiser vtwin is still fast. when the v65 came out there were no sportbikes and it just blew everything off the road. but faster bikes came out every year after that. and if the v65 engine didnt send its oil to the shaft before the cams, theyd prolly still have an engine similar to that today. yamahas "vmax" engine started in 1982 and its still used today
@archetype891 I am 48 years old so I can recall what was on the market back when the V65 and the VMAX came out. There were several sport bikes and the V65 blew them all away. Very few bikes can hang with a V65 even today. Its a small list of bikes that can do 10 second quarter miles and top out at 150 MPH. My V65 engine still runs like new. I think that Honda stopped making the bike becuase the market trend required that they make Harley clones which called for V Twins.
@whiskeyfoxpix i seriously doubt someone other than peewee is gonna get a 10 sec quarter mile on a v65. mid 11s on a good day. honda had to quit making chain driven cams because of their reputation with the v65s.
and trust me there were no fz6s or cbrs in 1982-1983!!! the first ninja was a kz900 with a fairing on it. the first sportbike was a honda interceptor.
the v65 was a monster back then. it was one of the biggest bikes made. an 1100 today isnt big at all.
@archetype891 You are probably right about Gleason being one of the few people to do a 1/4 mile in the 10s on ANY stock bike. He had the right combination of skill and weight. You may have a narrow view of what is considered a sportbike but there were some in 83. The Interceptor, the Kaw GPZ, & Suzuki GS series were all super/sport bikes. The V65 wasn't even out in 82. The Ninja came out in 84 and did not exactly eclipse the V65 in top speed.(147 v 151 mph). V65s are STILL Fast and Quick!
@whiskeyfoxpix im pretty sure honda had a v65 magna built and running in 1982 as an 83 model, as were the v45s before them. trust me im not magna hating ive had 2. v65s are quick today but i wouldnt call em fast. any modern 600cc sport bike is gonna give it a good run. the GPZs and GSs werent crotch rockets back then, they were just the biggest bikes the japs had at the time. honda raced their cb750 forever and noone is calling that a sportbike. theyre just UJMs
@archetype891 Of course they had a V65 engineered in 82 but it didn't arrive for sale until 83. Before that they only had the V45 Magna. I used to know all the performance stats of all the bikes when they came out. I have not had that level of knowledge for years. My knowledge might be as outdated as my 48 year old body. Are they really building 600cc bikes that can do a 10 second 1/4 mile and top out at 150? If so, Wow! Research the 83 GPZs and GSs. They were sportbikes.
badpuppy1970 has it right on the money, I have owned both as well...If both bike are running good, it's all driver. Those bikes are a well matched pair, and anyone who has a Max should have a buddy with a Magna cause it makes for a lot of fun.
@VmaxGuy72 almost got me a v-65. that was the bike back in the day. the only reasion i didn't is because i swore the next bike i own will be the vmax. well, i got one. now i wish i had a buddy that has a magna. could be fun
Here's what happened. I'm trying out the helmet cam, so I give to my buddy on the Magna, his bike needs a little TLC to bring it back to full strength so we're out just "hooliganing." I give him a couple second head start as you will note in the dialogue he says "I'll start and you come catch me." The 07 Vmax has no problem passing the Magna, but its really apples to oranges. As for the tach comments, he shifts way late every time, so I'm giving him a hard time. Don't over-think this one
I've had both... in fact 2 V-Max's both videos online 2005 and 1996. The V-max will out-accelerate the V65 but partially due to the fact the V65 has 6 speeds it does have a slightly higher top end. Ummm... also I hope it was meant as a joke... ALL engines have the same redline in every gear
i was looking at getting one of those hero cams, looks pretty nice. i'd think the magna would have the vmax on the top end with gearing. as for the 1/4, sure, vmax is faster with gleason on it but with average joes it's going to be splitting hairs.
@VmaxGuy72 The quality difference between the two is hands down in Honda's favor. Good motor and all... but the bike is very cheaply built. Not saying the honda doesn't have it's issues.. like frame flex. but I love my V-65 and wouldn't trade it for a vmax
@LordSamuelJ that's not true, I've seen v-max starting to smoke being driven by a person doing it like a tortoise. Unmount an honda v4 carb is simple if you know how to do it,

odmcarp 1 year ago
@odmcarp
Mine corners just fine, you just need to grow a pair to ride it well.
It's hard to get good tires for the stock rim sizes but besides that I have no problem out cornering many bikes.
My only problems with it are weak breaks and small gas tank.
otherwise It's awesome.
RoeyHaviv 11 months ago
@RoeyHaviv if you had a real bike like the Magna V65, you wouldn't have all those problems
odmcarp 11 months ago
@odmcarp
I like the magna from an engineer pov, but it's not for me.
I don't think I will even look back at it after a ride, it doesn't have that x factor that the max has.
BTW, The V65 has the same size front rim as the V-Max and 140/90-16 rear.
Tire choices aren't any better.
The breaks are better on the magna but it's easy to upgrade,
i'd rather run out of gas with my V-Max then to ride without lust.
I think that's the word for it, yes it's a tool, a machine, but somehow more too.

And don't let me get into the new VMAX's that's killing buza's, ninja's, honda's, Ducati's etc...
dramalss 2 weeks ago

What are those V Max's supposed to do in the 1/4 mile? I have an 86' V65 but would love to have a V Max sitting next to it in the garage...
iedhunter05 1 year ago
Isn't it amazing that a well tuned 26 year old V65 can hang with a 2007 VMax. Its a hard fact that a well tuned V65 can match speed with a VMax. I agree that the rider can make all the difference. The No-B.S. performance stats prove that these bikes are on a near equal footing. I love them both. No contest when it comes to the most bang for your buck.
whiskeyfoxpix 1 year ago
@whiskeyfoxpix whats the year have to do with it? vmaxes didnt change power wise since they were created. and they were made for 22 years because they were bonafied bad ath.
archetype891 1 year ago
@archetype891 You don't think its amazing that ANY 26 year old bike can keep up with a 2007 VMAX? I Love Em! Its a clear testemant to the power and engineering of the Honda. of course a well tuned 1986 VMAX might also be a force to contend with. Are there still a lot of them on the road? I honestly don't know, but I do know that the Honda V4 engines were built to last. There are lots of V65s still out there becuase people love them and Honda built them right. and Yes, the VMAX is Bad A#@
whiskeyfoxpix 1 year ago
@whiskeyfoxpix the reason japan didnt make big bikes back then was because japan limited their CCs to 750. any 1000cc UJM that isnt a detuned cruiser vtwin is still fast. when the v65 came out there were no sportbikes and it just blew everything off the road. but faster bikes came out every year after that. and if the v65 engine didnt send its oil to the shaft before the cams, theyd prolly still have an engine similar to that today. yamahas "vmax" engine started in 1982 and its still used today
archetype891 1 year ago
@archetype891 I am 48 years old so I can recall what was on the market back when the V65 and the VMAX came out. There were several sport bikes and the V65 blew them all away. Very few bikes can hang with a V65 even today. Its a small list of bikes that can do 10 second quarter miles and top out at 150 MPH. My V65 engine still runs like new. I think that Honda stopped making the bike becuase the market trend required that they make Harley clones which called for V Twins.
whiskeyfoxpix 1 year ago
@whiskeyfoxpix i seriously doubt someone other than peewee is gonna get a 10 sec quarter mile on a v65. mid 11s on a good day. honda had to quit making chain driven cams because of their reputation with the v65s.
and trust me there were no fz6s or cbrs in 1982-1983!!! the first ninja was a kz900 with a fairing on it. the first sportbike was a honda interceptor.
the v65 was a monster back then. it was one of the biggest bikes made. an 1100 today isnt big at all.
archetype891 1 year ago
@archetype891 You are probably right about Gleason being one of the few people to do a 1/4 mile in the 10s on ANY stock bike. He had the right combination of skill and weight. You may have a narrow view of what is considered a sportbike but there were some in 83. The Interceptor, the Kaw GPZ, & Suzuki GS series were all super/sport bikes. The V65 wasn't even out in 82. The Ninja came out in 84 and did not exactly eclipse the V65 in top speed.(147 v 151 mph). V65s are STILL Fast and Quick!
whiskeyfoxpix 1 year ago
@whiskeyfoxpix im pretty sure honda had a v65 magna built and running in 1982 as an 83 model, as were the v45s before them. trust me im not magna hating ive had 2. v65s are quick today but i wouldnt call em fast. any modern 600cc sport bike is gonna give it a good run. the GPZs and GSs werent crotch rockets back then, they were just the biggest bikes the japs had at the time. honda raced their cb750 forever and noone is calling that a sportbike. theyre just UJMs
archetype891 1 year ago

VmaxGuy72 1 year ago 4
@VmaxGuy72 almost got me a v-65. that was the bike back in the day. the only reasion i didn't is because i swore the next bike i own will be the vmax. well, i got one. now i wish i had a buddy that has a magna. could be fun
357daedalus 6 months ago
Here's what happened. I'm trying out the helmet cam, so I give to my buddy on the Magna, his bike needs a little TLC to bring it back to full strength so we're out just "hooliganing." I give him a couple second head start as you will note in the dialogue he says "I'll start and you come catch me." The 07 Vmax has no problem passing the Magna, but its really apples to oranges. As for the tach comments, he shifts way late every time, so I'm giving him a hard time. Don't over-think this one
VmaxGuy72 1 year ago
@VmaxGuy72 So what does this mean? Is the VMax a faster bike? I love the look of the Magna.
Thebearcat66 9 months ago
I've had both... in fact 2 V-Max's both videos online 2005 and 1996. The V-max will out-accelerate the V65 but partially due to the fact the V65 has 6 speeds it does have a slightly higher top end. Ummm... also I hope it was meant as a joke... ALL engines have the same redline in every gear
wideeyevideo 1 year ago
I've owned a v65 and if tuned right they outrun a ninja 900 hands down I did it with mine and the kid couldn't believe it.
originalkd 1 year ago
@originalkd maybe it happend one time and You think this is it.900 sport can beat lot of bikes .specially old v4
adamvmax 1 year ago
That Magna wasnt running good, Ive owned both bikes and there pretty much the same in the quarter mile but the Magna is faster on top end.

i was looking at getting one of those hero cams, looks pretty nice. i'd think the magna would have the vmax on the top end with gearing. as for the 1/4, sure, vmax is faster with gleason on it but with average joes it's going to be splitting hairs.
RosieKR 1 year ago
I didn't listen the dialogue at the begining, during the video I thought "but where is the V-max?!"
theincredibledorian 2 years ago
Listen to the dialogue at the intro...."I'll start and you come get me." That's the deal... I gave him a decent start.... Maybe 1.5 - 2.0 seconds.
VmaxGuy72 2 years ago
@VmaxGuy72 The quality difference between the two is hands down in Honda's favor. Good motor and all... but the bike is very cheaply built. Not saying the honda doesn't have it's issues.. like frame flex. but I love my V-65 and wouldn't trade it for a vmax
chris1451 1 year ago
@chris1451 Vmax is better quality built than the v65. I know this as I work on them both. Plus the Magna is difficult to work on and harder to tune.

@LordSamuelJ that's not true, I've seen v-max starting to smoke being driven by a person doing it like a tortoise. Unmount an honda v4 carb is simple if you know how to do it,
