Difficult to judge out of context. Concerning the young girl, Tebaldi may have been simply dealing with a young student at the very beginning of her studies. It is also certainly the case that ignorant teachers will push their beginning students into a masterclass that will only traumatize rather than help them.
Like a professional well know and respected singer, I can tell this girl sounds like a female cat been fucked on front of my apt window. You know when cats fuck, the female does this strange high pitch sound that really hurts our ears. I didn't want to be rude to her and tell her to go home, you know they are paying me very well to pretend that she has talent. But let me tell you something and this is serious. This girl needs help, serious mental help. SHE CAN'T SING
I would also have been upset with the young student trying to sing Mozart. Understandably so, she's impressed by Tebaldi's regal presence, but come on, the voice is awful, no style, no projection, worse than a sick cat. BTW Tebaldi's "Vissi d'arte" heard in this excerpt is certainly the most beautiful rendition of Tosca's prayer ever ....
This moves me so much! The color of Tebaldi's voice and her restraint in singing with such full resonance, never pushed or shoved the way so many today go about it!
Her advise to young singers is right on! Young voices should be developed with care over many years...only jumping into dramatic repertoire when the voice is more mature.
Yes, that young singer wasn't ready--but Tebaldi was generous & supportive as well as kind (what comes from unkindness?). Criticism is difficult-what should she have done so as not to discourage the creative process in a prospective artist? (Callas' Master Classes as well as Resnick's are cruel, and, I've mentioned to the latter;her response, I am demanding!). OK, be demanding but Maestro Levine is always supportive--I guess the love of the singer, but demanding, too--nothing goes by him.
Saluti cari. Piero Visconti, Roma.
Criticism, oh, cruel, cruel attitudes of the viewers. How would you feel being a beginner in front of a major singer. Tebaldi, the master teacher in this case was not cruel with the girl.
Master Classes are mostly bizarre. This girl was not even within a mile of absorbing what Tebaldi could have taught her about "Dove Sono", so instead, Tebaldi had to focus on her breathing, the fact that there is no support at all--because without a properly supported tone, to talk about interpretation is hopeless. It was the same with the Sutherland Master Class at Juilliard, mostly singers without a clue to technique.
The wrongest thing of this video is to see one of the greatest singers teaching in that way.
Renata was unique, one can be a fan of Callas, but the voice of Renata was another thing. She often said that she did not like giving master classes in these conditions. Singers often go to be heard, but the teacher cannot teach in few days , it's impossible. l believe that she was not happy to do this. Master class is for teaching how to express and not how to breathe .. This fact is terrible.
While this may be true, I believe that a teacher, if he/she sees incorrect fundamentals should and perhaps must address them.
I've seen great performers do this to great effect. Even though that teacher will not be with the student beyond the masterclass, perhaps he or she illuminates a part of the student's voice (and how it works) that the student or the student's teacher may not have noticed.
i totally agree with you. it is so important to make sure the techniqe is correct. it has been my experence that by fixing a problem in the techniqe other problems that the singer may be having seem to fix themselves
Why give singers like this a chance when they can't really sing. It's an insult to the person taking the class no matter who they are. God some teachers need shot for putting out singer this this soprano and in front of Tebaldi
What a fountain of negativity that Diva Tebaldi is, I pity the students that have to put up whith her, thinking they can learn something. You would expect someone who had such a career to be more content with their lifes than feeling the need to put down insecure sudents by mocking them and saying things like "who are you afraid of, are you tired?" "Certainly not of you, you old frustrated creature!" would be the adequate reply. Rule of thumb: don't go to famous singers to learn! Go to teachers!
Becoming a good one, you needs discipline. None of the big ones was based on a soft-silk treatment. Courage and perseverance is needed and not soft words like, oh you are good and can be better, work more honey!!!, your opinion reveals a bit of your trauma and you do have the negativity, trying to destroy the good image of Mrs Tebaldi.
I agree that you need discipline among other things to become a good artist. Soft words are just as worthless as humiliation. What a student needs in the end is knowledge (esp. technique). I do have a kind of trauma, cos I used to visit great singers and take lots of lessons from them and realised after a few years that I had learned nothing. It doesn't have to be that way, some singers have been taught by famous singers, but generally it is agreed that great singers are rarely great teachers.
Tebaldi's studied with C. Melis who had been a noted singer. Then she was coached by M. Llopart, another noted singer, who eventually would teach/coach Moffo, Scotto, Kraus, Cossotto and Souliotis. In any case, Tebaldi is actually generous to this student. However, the regular teacher of this girl should have said to the girl, "You are not ready to sing for Tebaldi."
Of the people you mentioned, only M. Llopart was a noted teacher. None of the others have produced a professional voice as far as I know. As I said, there is a chance that you can learn from a person which is primarily known as a singer, not a teacher (Florez and Calleja come to mind), but if you wanna go down that road and plan to learn singing by studying 3 years with Mrs. Tebaldi (I know she is no longer with us), you could be disappointed of the outcome. Maybe I'm wrong though.
@kh3205 Criticism, oh, cruel, cruel attitudes of the viewers. How would you feel being a beginner in front of a major singer. Tebaldi, the master teacher in this case was not cruel with the girl.
@kh3205 Absolutely! What a waste! So many of us would have given both arms to have been in the place of that useless student. I'm embarrassed that Tebaldi had to waste her time listening to that.
La Regina dell'opera!!! She will reign for all time. She's a miracle from God. The most beautiful voice of our time- dignified, always poised, confident, and never any display of ego. I met her at a book signing, and had the honor of holding her hand even for a moment. That smile made us all melt. I've never been in a crowd of hundreds of people in silence waiting to just to have a moment with the her. God bless you Signora Tebaldi, RIP with the angels.
I think this is the most important comment I've read about this video. This is absolutely right, and the post-war taste for "brilliance" is destroying classical music performance tradition. I'm just sorry you hear her a few sentences in Italian, then dubbed in German etc. Would love to hear the entire interview.
I saw her a great many times at the Met in New York City as Desdemona, Mistress Ford, Tosca, Mimi, Manon Lescaut, Minnie, La Gioconda, Adriana Lecouvreur, and Magdalena de Coigny as well as in many concerts. My favorite of her roles was definitely Minnie which she sang staged performances of only at the end of her career.
I think Mrs Tebaldi should have screened her students before, and make a severe selection, what Mrs Callas did with her master classes, a shame when there are wonderfull singers who would have kill to be with mrs Tebaldi for her master Classes.
fabulous to see even if i am not a tebaldian but a callasian. it is interesting and important because she is great and art is fragile. she has right technically speaking.
@Andante735 While I still believe Callas to be the most amazing operatic artist who ever lived, that does not relegate Tebaldi to also-ran status. Tebaldi had the most gorgeous voice of her time, no doubt. Callas had an imperfect yet amazing instrument that enabled her to sing anything she wanted, and she did. Both were so different in their artistic and vocal objectives that I can't see how they can be compared. We should be so lucky to have another Tebaldi and Callas with us today!
I agree with tenornmd! First of all, the girl had no business even singing 'Dove sono...' let alone singing for Tebaldi. She needs to go back and start vocal study at the beginning!
Tebaldi is so beautiful. And I always love to hear the ease with which she speaks English. I am offended, however, that she should have to teach someone how to breath during a masterclass! I have gone to school with dozens of young singers who would swim to Italy for the chance to work with the likes of Tebaldi.

Wonderful to see a new video of Tebaldi, even if I couldn't understand all
the languages.
I saw her in three operas in the l960s with the Met. In l973 I attended her
farewell concert in Los Angeles.
Now I am old and have Alzheimer's, but I still remember those magical
nights in the theater. Thanks for the wonderful post.
