tks,,,,, hey my lcd is a bit crazy just go off some times,, but her eis too cold, some times i put close to the heating than works better, do you think i have to chenge my lcd??? thanks
Turned on my macbook 13" a couple a days ago and about a fifth of the screen on the right side was covered in colored lines. Does it mean that the LCD is broken? Went to the shop where I bought it and they told me it would cost about 650+ dollars to repair it ( I live in Norway, everything is expensive here) I can still use it and the machine works really well. Is there a cheaper way for me to replace the LCD? btw I have decent computer knowledge, but I am certainly not professional. Thanks!
do i need to replace my LCD screen?? because my macbook's LCD does not light up anymore, at first, the LCD will flutter and goes blackout when im trying to position it.. i can see the mouse cursor though.. only the screen wont light up..
PLEASE re-do and mention it is SOOOO much easier to pop off the clutch cover over the inverter to plug in the inverter cable. It comes off easily and saves ALOT of time in blind attempts to plug in the inverter plug. Otherwise, thanks for the great info!!
Great help! For the special tool, I used a jumbo paper clip and bent the end with needle-nose pliers (bend over about an eighth of an inch). Worked like a charm.
Great help, it worked perfectly. For the hook tool I used a dental pick tool that you buy at the drug store. This saves so much time, I have repaired another the long way, taking everything out.

Don't try this. Just take it in if inverter board is the issue. If you really want to DIY, then go the long way and take screen off.
This did not work at all for me as I needed about 10 more degrees to get the hinge piece out. I finally got it out and it was tight, and then replacing back over the inverter board ended up damaging the wires inserting into the board. I ended up having to take it to the Apple store and with a new inverter board and hinge cover + Labor it was only around $60.
Marriage saving tip: Needed to replace my daughters Macbook LCD, and thought this video was well done and accomplishable. The only concern we had was the inverter cable/clutch cover trick. Like virtually everyone else who has commented, "a few times" was more like 3 hours. It turns out the clutch cover-wait for it-comes completely off with a screwdriver exposing the inverter board so you can plug the clip in with your fingers!
where do i get that crazy tool??? can you tell me what it's called and where i can find one on the web so maybe i can fabricate one without buying it??
Hi, I had a screen problem and successfully fixed it....the problem is that after about 6 months of use the screen is black when I boot. I think it's a graphics card failure but I'm not sure. Someone help!!!!
hi there, i followed your video, and when i tried to put the bezel back in everything but the little gray things didnt click back into place, i try to push them in but that doesn't seem to work. What can i do to get them back in there??
Thanks for posting - this was great! I found it easiest to remove the clips from the bezel cover and insert them into the metal frame, then snap in the bezel cover at the end of the process. I also had to adjust the wires under the hinge cover so they didn't get crushed. Thanks again!
The hardest part is to insert the Inventor cable in but by prying the cover, I could see the receptacle and by using a paper clip appropriately bend, inserted the male connector in.
I change the inverter and the screen still doing the same thing when I move the screen in certain angle turns off but not like complete off you can still see against the light desktop or the webpage that you was in please let me know what it could be!
you are a goddess. i just did the repair...mind you the inverter cable took me a very long time haha. but my mac repair guy wanted a lot for the part and labor. not as much as apple, but still. thank you, you are my HERO!!!
Oh god she just removed that LCD in 3 minutes. I just sped through a 9 minute long video of some other guy doing the same thing. Where have you been all my life?
well, I did manage this, perhaps I am not a rockstar though. Came very close to smashing the whole computer with a hammer, that says more about me really I guess. I understand the "Doing it completely blind" part cannot be shown, but if you had explained that the plug for the inverter is on the hard left of the channel, that would have really helped. I pushed the plug 30 or 40 times down the channel, hearing a click each time, eventually getting the plug stuck sideways and breaking the wires.
Hey. Great Tutorial. I need some help, though. When I went to check to see if the screen would function properly, the backlight did not work. I can see the images and stuff, but it is extremely dim. I thought that it might have been the screen, but I plugged in my old one and the backlight didn't work on that one either. Is it possible to fix this?
I have an Issue with my screen if i move it all the sudden gets black the computer still on and even you can hear the video so you can tell so you have to play with it and goes back to normal what do you think it is?
Success! Thank you! I'm with dmnyli, below. It took some time to "see" the inverter plug. I used a tiny nail on the end of a hemostat (clamp) to work the cable clip in. The tips of my fingers are still sore from holding back the clutch cover! Another issue -- keeping the sleep magnet in place as you reattach the frame. I finally held it down with the eraser end of a pencil. .Just one mystery -- I double-checked all around the frame. I couldn't figure out where that "extra" screw goes!
i've just got to say you saved my life with that inverter cable trick. I had been trying to get that thing in place for over an hour. You made it look so easy. And once I got it in, I realized it was. thanks!
Will this video work for the Macbook that was bought in early 2007. I just want to make sure that i follow the directions for my laptop. I hope the instructions are not different for different generation of macbooks.
so i got my screen replaced but now I cant figure out were all the screws go to put it back together properly . And now the battery wont charge the computer only stays on if plugged in :( grrr . Help . I need a video to show me how to put back my mac and show what screws go where .

Thanks so much for posting it and saving me a ton of money. I have to say that you're amazing for getting that inverter cable in with two attempts, I had to look up pictures of the inverter board to understand where it was supposed to plug into. I recommend viewing pictures of the board to anyone who wants to attempt this, it helped to understand where the plugs were seeing as how you can't see them. That being said it still took me about two hours to complete. I wish you all good luck!
i want to thank you for this. because of your video i was able to take out my cracked screen, replace it, then take it to apple since im under apple care and have them give me a brand new macbook.. lol thanks!
I have question, I have a macbook 13" and I've noticed this problem since december where I turn on my macbook and use it and sometimes the screen would just go black and for it come back on and I would have to move the screen back and forth and the screen comes back on. Now these days moving it back and forth doesn't work at all I have to keep it in a permanent slanted position for the screen/backlight to stay on so i can work. Can you help me? would I have to replace my entire LCD for that?
my back light isnt working why ??? its all pluged in to 2 bits at the back i can c the screen but its realy dark any 1 know why the back light isnt working
What a brilliant vid. this woman is an absolute legend. I used a guitar pic for the bezel, and one of my wifes hair grips to pop the cable clip in in lieu of any serious persons tools. My wife now has a perfectly working screen after I broke it... so thanks.... no really, thanks.
I followed everything on this video and it was great, but then when I tuned the screen on the back light turns on for a second and then goes off. The screen works perfectly but the backlight won't stay on. If I turn the brightness all the way down so the backlight turns off and then press the brightness up the backlight only stays on for a second, so I have to strobe the backlight on and off for my computer to work
What did I do??? Please help. And btw it does the same thing for the smashed one
first off I forgot where all the srews went that I took out.....I just threw the damn thing in the garbage....went and brought an ipad whoooweeee!! Im rich why bother fixing it
@RSXxSillyManxX did you just buy the "OEM Front Display Glass" or did you replace the entire lcd display? My screen is cracked. You can't make out anything but at least it's not entirely black.
This was the first adventure I took with my macbook disassembling and it worked great. I followed this video step-by-step (having to re-watch quite a few portions of course), and the screen replacement went pretty flawless. The only frustrating issue I had was installing the inverter cable into the inverter under the clutch cover. What is shown here done in about 20 seconds, I think it took me 2 hours, but I was finally successful.
Here's a tip for anyone else who has trouble with that step...The area of the inverter board for the cable clip to attach to is on the KEYBOARD side of the board. If you bend back the clutch cover enough, you can actually see the bridge area that will fit between the wires of the cable clip. Line it up with your hand, then use the pick/dentist hook to push it into place.
the backlight on my macbook will randomly go dim. to get it back on, i have to wiggle the display. the apple store tells me its just a pinched wire (the inverter cable?). but to fix it they'd have to send it out and it'd cost a ridiculous 280 bucks plus tax. fuck that. how do i un-pinch the inverter cable?
@JHanzi1000 We are by no means technically abled. This video was excellent in helping a novice replace the LCD after our 2 year old dropped the macbook. This video helped tremendously. You can imagine how frustrated we were when we went to turn the power on and nothing. I did notice the screen kind of flicker and in a well lighted area we could see the log in screen. We searched everywhere for an answer and were ready to give in to the thought that we were going to have to replace the
@alertgirl25 inverter. When we researched if we would be able to change the inverter, we discovered that the inverter cable wasn't completely plugged into the inverter. We were ecstatic that was the only problem.
I found a bunch of screens on ebay for the A1181 model on ebay, but my concern isIs it necessary to buy replacement inverter cords as well? isn't it just connected to the motherboard and I just simply stick the cord back into the lcd screen?
the way I did most of my screen repairs was opening the whole mac, taking out the keyboard and connect the inverter cable.. the way she is doing that is easier +1 video!
i just completed this repair! - heres a few tips from a first timer:
the most difficult part of this is getting the inverter cable plugged back in - you need to be able to see where the pins will sit
- prop open the right side of the clutch hinge as much as possible without breaking it - to do this we wedged the gap open and placed a bic ballpoint pen lid in there - it worked well
once you have a good gap put the macbook on its side vertical - with a pen light look in there to see the pins
Thanks so much for this vid! Helpful hint - I asked at my dentist if they had any scraper tools they were throwing away and they were happy to give me what they had. Looks like pretty much the same tool that Rebecca uses to plug in the inverter cable. Took a few tries but I don't think I would have been able to do it without that tool!
You might need a 2.0 mm Phillips screwdriver. Pull a cord looped into the slot on the right side of the hinge cover to see where the plug sits. (Do not pull the cover with your finger tips. The pressure can lead to nerve damage with numbness that lasts days.) Use a guide to position the new plug. A stiff wire with two right-angle bends works fine. If there are 2 people,1 pulls back the cover and the other guides the plug. Don't lean on the new screen when you pull back the hinge cover. Danke.
I couldn't connect the inverter cable wire to the inverter, I had to take out the bottom to connect them together. After all, the new screen worked for 10 seconds then it went off like usually. And now my keyboard doesn't work too. Does anyone have the same problem? Thank you very much :(
I've just replaced my lcd according to this great video. thanks a lot. but actually it was pretty stressful. cause after i disconnected inverter cable, it was not so easy like on video to reconnect it back. it takes a while to me to connect it back. and i made that magic Rebecca's tool from broken sunglasses wire. actually you should see approximately where the inverter is. and for that is helpful to see some inverter images (just search in the web) to imagine where to push connector
This is a wonderfully helpful video. I was able to replace my LCD using this demo...thank you, Rebecca! You probably saved me hundreds of dollars in repair costs.
ahhh.. I wish there was a part 0 to this video. I have a macbook pro, and don't want to take the whole thing apart before taking the screen out. I don't know how to get those two screws on the bottom of the screen to start taking the bezel off though. The space is so tight that I can't possibly get a screwdriver in there.
It's a very different procedure on the Macbook Pro. With the Macbook Pro using philips screws and the angle being different it's challenging, but it is actually possible with a thin flexible driver. That said, removing the top case on a Macbook Pro is so simple that most technicians don't bother cheating at this repair. Do note that you will then need to remove the display rear housing and there's definitely potential for damage if you don't do that right.
What is the name of that pick tool. I can not find a tool like that. What else can you use to plug the inverter cable, it seems impossilbe. I think i will break the hinge, because I can not see that slot it goes in. Help please
Yay, I finally did it. i bought a pick from Sears. It wasn't as good as hers because it wouldn't stay in, but after a long time I did. The screws took the longest time because I was using screwdrivers that were either a little bigger or smaller. The only thing wrong was parts of the wire wouldn't fit anywhere (the black and gray one) and so the frame is sticking out a bit.
I used a paper clip to helped make the connection and that worked fine. I think the plastic tool would make dealing w/ hinge cover a lot easier. Not sure where you would buy that though. I tried a credit card and a small letter opener neither which worked that well. Anyway thanks Rebecca K for doing the video.
Thanks for the video. saved me at least $150. I was willing to pay $200 to someone who knew what they were doing but couldn't find that locally or online (shipping costs brought it over 200) Finally I said what the hey found this video and everything worked out....well except the hinge cover and the bezel(frame) which isn't perfect.. The only thing I would do different is buy the plastic tool that she used. Also I pulled hinge cov. way back so I could see the connection. This REALLY helped!
I'm trying to do it with a paper clip, but the problem is that I have NFI where the damn plug is. Meanwhile my other hand is killing me from holding that fricking plastic back...
Hi Rebecca, I've finished part one, trying to test the new screen and I can't get the macbook to do the starting chime or give me any light up of the new screen, any clues as to what I've disconnected by accident to cause not start up chime or screen life?
I recently had to replace my lcd and i had to take apart my mac. I got the new screen connected, but when i turn on the laptop it shows the apple logo, but it turns off after a few seconds. Does anyone know what can be causing this?
Yes, the inverter cable is probably not connected properly...have been trying for 2 hours, still no luck. Anyone have hints...I'm not sure I'm trying to even hit the right spot. Thanks
Nice video. I found some text guide without pics or video and did the harder way. I really struggled with the hinge cover, because i thought I had to take it out. Then of course I almost lost the magnet, and now it doesn't sleep on lid close.
Also, the first screen I got ($85 bucks on ebay) had messed up backlight, so i had to do the whole operation three times, third being almost as fast the the video.
Any idea where I can find the plastic tool and curved thing-a-ma-bob? I'm about to under take this operation for the first time and a THRILLED I don't need to take the bottom off my Macbook.
tks,,,,, hey my lcd is a bit crazy just go off some times,, but her eis too cold, some times i put close to the heating than works better, do you think i have to chenge my lcd??? thanks

My 13" macbook screen recently broke. Planning on replacing it myself.
Question for people who've tried this:
How long did it take you to fix it based on this or other youtube videos?
How much did you pay for your screen? Where did you purchase it?
phattown213 1 year ago
@phattown213 It took me about an hour or so, and I paid $99 for a screen from OWC, pretty much all the replacement screens go for $99
RSXxSillyManxX 1 year ago
@RSXxSillyManxX did you just buy the "OEM Front Display Glass" or did you replace the entire lcd display? My screen is cracked. You can't make out anything but at least it's not entirely black.

Will the iSight still work after this?

First off I want to say thank you!
This was the first adventure I took with my macbook disassembling and it worked great. I followed this video step-by-step (having to re-watch quite a few portions of course), and the screen replacement went pretty flawless. The only frustrating issue I had was installing the inverter cable into the inverter under the clutch cover. What is shown here done in about 20 seconds, I think it took me 2 hours, but I was finally successful.
jradh 1 year ago
Here's a tip for anyone else who has trouble with that step...The area of the inverter board for the cable clip to attach to is on the KEYBOARD side of the board. If you bend back the clutch cover enough, you can actually see the bridge area that will fit between the wires of the cable clip. Line it up with your hand, then use the pick/dentist hook to push it into place.
Thanks again, and good luck!
jradh 1 year ago
i am not looking forward to pluging the screen in, that klutch cover is a bitch. any other tips i can have before i finally replug the screen?

the backlight on my macbook will randomly go dim. to get it back on, i have to wiggle the display. the apple store tells me its just a pinched wire (the inverter cable?). but to fix it they'd have to send it out and it'd cost a ridiculous 280 bucks plus tax. fuck that. how do i un-pinch the inverter cable?

I have done something wrong because my inverterboard is moving, is it wrong or can I continue to put in inverter board the inverter cable???
PLS help

@glowstickgorilla1 Would you recommend following this video to replace the back plastic (where the apple is)?

JHanzi1000 2 years ago
Did you fix this? You may not have plugged the back light back in.
phxdrummer16 1 year ago
@JHanzi1000 We are by no means technically abled. This video was excellent in helping a novice replace the LCD after our 2 year old dropped the macbook. This video helped tremendously. You can imagine how frustrated we were when we went to turn the power on and nothing. I did notice the screen kind of flicker and in a well lighted area we could see the log in screen. We searched everywhere for an answer and were ready to give in to the thought that we were going to have to replace the
alertgirl25 1 year ago
@alertgirl25 inverter. When we researched if we would be able to change the inverter, we discovered that the inverter cable wasn't completely plugged into the inverter. We were ecstatic that was the only problem.

I found a bunch of screens on ebay for the A1181 model on ebay, but my concern isIs it necessary to buy replacement inverter cords as well? isn't it just connected to the motherboard and I just simply stick the cord back into the lcd screen?
Can anyone correct me?

where can i buy a screen for my macbook? Because i cracked the screen
JustinBieberFanSites 2 years ago
the way I did most of my screen repairs was opening the whole mac, taking out the keyboard and connect the inverter cable.. the way she is doing that is easier +1 video!
ntzx9 2 years ago
i just completed this repair!

Took a few tries but I don't think I would have been able to do it without that tool!
k8bwd 2 years ago
You might need a 2.0 mm Phillips screwdriver. Pull a cord looped into the slot on the right side of the hinge cover to see where the plug sits. (Do not pull the cover with your finger tips. The pressure can lead to nerve damage with numbness that lasts days.) Use a guide to position the new plug. A stiff wire with two right-angle bends works fine. If there are 2 people,1 pulls back the cover and the other guides the plug. Don't lean on the new screen when you pull back the hinge cover. Danke.

Can you tell me what tools you used and where to get them? Also where to buy the LCD screen and what brand to use.
jadesynapse 2 years ago
I couldn't connect the inverter cable wire to the inverter, I had to take out the bottom to connect them together. After all, the new screen worked for 10 seconds then it went off like usually. And now my keyboard doesn't work too. Does anyone have the same problem? Thank you very much :(

On Ebay Alot of the 13.3 screens do not specify if they come with the Inverter cable or not. Does any one know if they come on the lcd standard.
ineedmunee911 2 years ago
I've just replaced my lcd according to this great video. thanks a lot. but actually it was pretty stressful. cause after i disconnected inverter cable, it was not so easy like on video to reconnect it back. it takes a while to me to connect it back. and i made that magic Rebecca's tool from broken sunglasses wire. actually you should see approximately where the inverter is. and for that is helpful to see some inverter images (just search in the web) to imagine where to push connector

ahhh.. I wish there was a part 0 to this video. I have a macbook pro, and don't want to take the whole thing apart before taking the screen out. I don't know how to get those two screws on the bottom of the screen to start taking the bezel off though. The space is so tight that I can't possibly get a screwdriver in there.
freethebikes 2 years ago 2
It's a very different procedure on the Macbook Pro. With the Macbook Pro using philips screws and the angle being different it's challenging, but it is actually possible with a thin flexible driver. That said, removing the top case on a Macbook Pro is so simple that most technicians don't bother cheating at this repair. Do note that you will then need to remove the display rear housing and there's definitely potential for damage if you don't do that right.

@smalldogelectronics i was wondering what kind of tools we need to replace the lcd screen
koolaidnum1 1 year ago
What is the name of that pick tool. I can not find a tool like that. What else can you use to plug the inverter cable, it seems impossilbe. I think i will break the hinge, because I can not see that slot it goes in. Help please
ghoorghoor 2 years ago
Yay, I finally did it. i bought a pick from Sears. It wasn't as good as hers because it wouldn't stay in, but after a long time I did. The screws took the longest time because I was using screwdrivers that were either a little bigger or smaller. The only thing wrong was parts of the wire wouldn't fit anywhere (the black and gray one) and so the frame is sticking out a bit.
ghoorghoor 2 years ago
Where did you buy the LCD and how much? Apple wants $850 to replace mine.

I used a paper clip to helped make the connection and that worked fine. I think the plastic tool would make dealing w/ hinge cover a lot easier. Not sure where you would buy that though. I tried a credit card and a small letter opener neither which worked that well. Anyway thanks Rebecca K for doing the video.
darun1 2 years ago
Thanks for the video. saved me at least $150. I was willing to pay $200 to someone who knew what they were doing but couldn't find that locally or online (shipping costs brought it over 200) Finally I said what the hey found this video and everything worked out....well except the hinge cover and the bezel(frame) which isn't perfect.. The only thing I would do different is buy the plastic tool that she used. Also I pulled hinge cov. way back so I could see the connection. This REALLY helped!

I don't enjoy this kind of thing.

Hi Rebecca, I've finished part one, trying to test the new screen and I can't get the macbook to do the starting chime or give me any light up of the new screen, any clues as to what I've disconnected by accident to cause not start up chime or screen life?

:)
I wish i saw it beforehand, though.
