  • Justin Hayward, you've cast your spell on me!

  • That was magical. And I really needed that, at a dark time.

  • If there are any more comments about this being dubbed I will be forced to dust of my record player, get the squirrel into position, put the old album onto the turntable and prove once and for all that is or not lip-synced. I do not believe that it is I just want to wake the squirrel up. This is not a metaphor.

  • Got to be one of the most haunting melodies ever written.

  • Ah to be gorgeous and young and full of dreams. I am thankful that Moody Blues came into my life at a time when I was a teen and the most receptive to alternative states.

  • Those Brits are quite the philosophers. Moody Blues, PInk Floyd, Stones, Beatles, a lot of looking at the nature of human kind. Interesting.

  • in the 70´s, sitting in English Literature classes, going home & listening to my fav. band - the Moody Blues, I dreamt these guys were the modern 'English Lit. knights'! In a sort of historical way they are!

  • Gonville Bromhead...

  • justin hayward is singing this LIVE. a fan since 1967. fantastic band.

  • I have this DVD - Justin's vocals are absolutely not lip synched - I have seen over a 1000 concerts in the last 42 years - I saw the moody blues many times and the show I saw in 1973 at the san diego sports arena was maybe the most incredible I've ever seen in terms of it sounded as though I was in the studio with them = tehy had the most amazing blend of studio and live !!!!!!

  • I watched an interview where they talked about how they played in

NY (I think) with the Beatles. The Beatles had been giving interviews

and everyone recognized them. They could not leave the hotel. It was

at this point that they decided to not have their faces on their music albums.

They didn't want to be so noticible in public and not have their lives somewhat

    private.

  • that should read last two verses.

  • justin's vocals are outstanding, kind of a neat touch to do part live and part pre recorded

  • @BLUESMANRONCHICAGO Not live at all and calling it Karaoke style is and was, insulting to bands with their stature back then and even now. This was a TV show recorded in the studio meant mostly for the TV audience. Nothing is live except for the talking part of the show. it was done by the Beatles and all the bands back then. They could not recreate live what they did in the studio back then.

  • @brofranomo I don't think you read the comments lower down. The debate goes on vis-a-vis live/mime. If you had the LP (yes vinyl) or CD you'd realise that Justin sings the lst two verses the WRONG way round. The music is not live but Justin is singing live.

  • @236raoc Go and watch tuesday afternoon at this venue. It fades at the end. NOT LIVE, not even Justins voice. It's prerecorded just for this TV show back then.

  • @brofranomo on this song justin's vocals WERE live, as they are slightly different from what was on the album itself. They could recreate their sound as i witnessed when I saw them in 1972 in Chicago, surprisingly they sounded very good, the mellotron was the key element live.

  • Astonishing musicianship. Their songs from the 60s albums were difficult to reproduce outside of the studio on stage with tight coherence and true to the mood the studio recording - they even admitted that. But the Moody Blues were steadfast perfectionists and it really shows here.

  • One of their best songs...in my humble opinion. Go back to 1969 and sit with me in a room in a one horse town in TX. with nothing but thoughts and loneliness No drugs..not alcohol or ones of the earth and when you..like me today listen again...want to escape....do...just do...in your mind..because that is all we are allowed.

  • A great cut and so well done... What a pleasure to hear...

An awesome group with so many great cuts.

I saw them in Oakland, CA in '71... An amazing concert...they out did themselves...

  • I can't enough of this band. They are original, poetic and thoroughly brilliant.

  • This is what poetry and imagination sound like when combined with with music and musical talent. If for only a brief few moments, man and musical instrument create such a harmony as to reach inside you and transport you to a peaceful place where a smile is commonplace.

  • when i hear i this i really piciure this in my mind i can see camlot wow i have always love moodies hell is named my son justin 5-19-80 before all the the pop singers an the nation caught on now a household name.... saw them in march 70 in fort worth tx look it my son the earlist name justin or close

  • @withnoego My sons name is Justin Hayward as well :) had another son who passed on named Graeme.

My wife is thankful we didnt have more boys or we would have had the whole band :)

  • Let Merlin cast his spell...

  • This is clearly not lip sync'd, and anybody that thinks differently is a sort of idiot. Sorry. Totally different than the studio album recording, a recording I've listened to a thousand times over 40 years. Another timeless classic from one of the greatest bands ever!

  • and there not in the rock and roll hall of fame. but all of their millions of fans know better. they dont need the rock and roll hall of fame. the rock and roll hall of fame needs them

  • @moodybluefan1

Yes, the issue with Hall of Fame is simple. I agree, the Moodies are great (the Fourth album TOCCC is one of my all time favorites now). However, I think they are thought of as a great pop band instead of a great Rock & Roll band. They have a few rock songs - but they are all about celestial pop.

  • @cloudjia very nice of you i just hope his time doesnt run out . dyalisis is very hard on you and he was never a stong looking dude but either way we have him in our memories and i'll see you in well my case about 20 yrs at the first concert in heaven if you believe. i have to cause my wife left me due to cancer 5 yrs ago and if i dont see her st pete will get an ass kicking his biggest problem is his blood type O its so common and the list is so long i was ab+ and no 1 on the list

  • It's not lip sync~It is the Like before you where born~Morron!! back then it was Tubes and 30 plus years of (8mm)----(not Digital)~Who ever posted this~Thanks~you know stuff~

  • original acid rock baby !

  • The comments about this being mimed & sync'd make me laugh. Justin sings the last two verses the wrong way round. MMM makes me think HE's live!

  • just another magical tune from one of the earliest progressive rock bands, their songs are timesless, and Justin Hayward has one of the finest voices ever heard in any genre of rock and roll

  • @cloudjia

    Thank you tenderheart!

Thanks God and Moodies we are not alone!

I am 54..I was in a band back in the 70's and we did some moody blues...When I was pregnant with my 30 year old, I was so in love with Justin, that is what my daughter would have been named..at the time it was an unusual name...I wonder if it is he who made it so popular? I want you to reach 90 still listening...peace :) Kate

  • have they ever done a complete album from beginning to end, live?

  • 142 to 148 the flautist messes up and Justin gives him the eye lol

  • Six people can't sit at peace!

  • This song his played live cause I've listened to this song hundreds of times and the background music is really different ...by the way, I enjoy this live tune.

Thank's for putting it on youtube.

  • Sounds to me as though someone doesn't know of what a Mellotron is capable of doing. It has a recorder in it as well as a number of other organ accessories. Record Ray and have him play against himself. Someone better do their homework. If you know of any instance at all, except for promo videos, where the MBs lip-synched anything, I'll be dipped in sheep dip.

  • a stunning moodies song!

harking back to my floppy haired teens

  • a stunning moodies song!

  • I listen to this and can see them in a time of peace in the spring travelling as the minstrels they are through England. I can see art and life coming together in this song. I wonder how Justin and John would be on Lutes. We know how Ray would play the flute.

  • Thanks for posting this. We had this played at my wedding in 1973, for us it is "our song". 37 years and two grown kids later we still love this song.

  • I think this issue was resolved by Pinder a few years ago. The vocals and flute are live. The rest is backing track which is why there is sometimes a double flute. Pinder is sitting at an organ and obviously not a Mellotron.

  • @hostroute

Thanks for confirming this. There are several YouTube vids from this concert, and I have commented on severl of them that some of the music was dubbed, since we hear Pinder's Mellotron MkII but see him playing a Hammond B3. The singing however is clearly "live."

  • Check out "Marie" by Justin Hayward on my channel. Youtube.com/GlobetownArt.

  • this is so live sort it out will ya

  • I've been a huge Moody Blues fan since the late 60s. This song (particularly the recorded version) highlights how, in my opinion, Justin Hayward had the most beautiful male voice ever in the history of pop/rock music. It's good to see that even now, there are so many of you out there who still understand and appreciate how incredible this music was, and sad to think that it's like will never again be created.

  • My all time favourite album. I have most of the top 200 and includes the great works of Beethoven et al. Fantastic work from start to end - magical. Lovely live recording although some in this series are studio versions.

  • I love the Moodies. I have seen them around 40 times. I do not think Justin Lip synchs. Although, I was disappointed one time at a Universal Studios concert in about 85 or 86ish when Patrick Moraz was part of the band. I did question if they had some of the music on tape as part of the show. I thought they did and I was actually hurt that my favorite band, who I treasured in the 70's, would do that. I still treasure them.

I still love the Moodies sound; the lyrics are "only Moodies"

    Joe

  • Ummm, no comments about the tech, just that as a confused kid out of High school, this and a couple of their other songs kept me from joining the Army. May the reflection of that goodness continue long after I'm gone...

  • such a nice song!

  • Is this about watching TV?

  • Wizards!!!!!!!

  • I was 20 and so naive about almost everything,I would go to the park and hang hut or go to the beach and stay untill the rain would drive me back to Milwaukie and the safety of home and family.

  • band's in the sixties alway's synched their songs. the stones would just have live vocal tracks. the beatles always synched, because of quality i guess.

  • love is an orgasm that just goes on and on!- are you sitting comfortably - then we,ll begin[ introduction to listen with mother on the light programme for those old enough to remember radio before the pirates

  • love is an orgasm that just goes on and on!

  • The vocals are live - that cannot be questioned. I've seen Justin lip sync and he simply isn't that good. And he sounds nothing like he does on the original studio version. Also, it's pretty damn obvious that there are two flute lines so clearly Ray is playing live while the studio track is playing behind him. As for the rest of the instruments, maybe they are "sync'd" - it seems like they are. That was pretty common in those days in small venues like this.

  • @dewey3k the second flute sound is the melotron, and it is out of tune!

  • who cares if they lip sync, it's the moody blues you idiots , name another band that has been together for 40 years and are still together!

  • @planetjanet2 i'm afraid you're a bit off dont get me wrong i am a huge mooies fan, seen them live about 25 times in 10 countries but ray thomas is no longer with them and may no longer be with us at all. he is very ill and waiting and hoping for a kidney transpllant, as a lucky transplant recipient i can only hope he gets one cause dialyisis sucks and he was never a big guy and you kinda melt i was 220 lbs and dropped to 128 when my kidney came so pray for ray janet he needs our help

  • I saw the Moodies a month ago and this was as good and as fresh as it was back then.

  • @barneldu Well this is not live, it's a lypsinc. I saw them twice back in the early 70's and this is not live at all. If you think it is live, don't you think it's amazing how they can get sound out of those instruments without being hooked up to amps or the drummer just barely tapping on the drums in that kind of forum? Every song that you see at this forum is not live. Sorry!!!!

  • @anjilyn2 You are the clueless one. I even sent you a video of them actually playing live with the melotron and at the section where it sounds like a piano here, it did not there. I already told you this is not live, and it's NOT.

  • i am still in love with justin and his music. happy birthday justin!

  • This is the sweetest song about tripping that I've ever heard. I love this ^_^

  • I think these old songs are among some of the best songs ever written. So understand that the Moodies are my favorite band of all time. But I have to agree that the guys are lip synching in some of the songs in some of these videos. Not on this song. Justin is obviously singing here. But watch the video "Tortoise and the Hare." It's obviously they are lip synching in that one. It doesn't change that I love the music and enjoy watching the videos,

  • This is not live!!!!!! The vocals MIGHT be but I think you'll find that bits were re recorded to be mimed to.

  • How beautiful is this song, dreamy voice and flute playing so good.

  • I remember how we used to look forward to each new song from "The Moody Blues." This was one of the most innovative groups of my era. Their sound was always new, unique, and brought hours of listening pleasure on the old TEAC Reel-to-Reel tape players. I cannot tell you the memories that were made while listening to this group.

  • @Halo101st Hahahaha. I remember as well. Good times they were too!!! For me - in Melbourne, Australia on the south coast in summer.

There are things you never forget and stay with you until you die.

    Cheers to you, friend!!!

  • @VeroniqueCG You are so very correct.. Getting older is not for the timid, is it?

    Salute, my friend!

  • @Halo101st Shit! I relocated to Scotland when I was 64. Timid!! Not on your nelly!! You have one life and owe yourself everything you can fit in.

I raise my glass to you and toast all of us who keep smiling (in my case somewhat fiercely) to the world.

  • @Halo101st One more comment - I listened to this again just now and realised how stoned we all were at the time!!! Marvellous times. Full of smiles, hugs and acceptance.

Much nicer than I see today, I have to say. Cheers!!!

  • @VeroniqueCG You, sir, sound like a real player. I doubt anyone would confuse you with being timid. As you said, it is a real shame that the memories of that era are confined to, and will die with, us. There has been nothing like them since and the music has gone extinct, unfortunately.

    Salut!

  • @Halo101st

The memories will live forever with us. And be the legends of eternity. These lads will play forever and be forever young. Ray will be back. We won't have earthly cares distracting us from their music. Heavenly.

  • @fluffythecat2 Not too soon, I hope. I want to stay around a bit longer to see how much more ridiculous people can become as compared to the way it used to be.

  • @VeroniqueCG "The good old days." Cheers to you, too, my friend.

  • Oh how I love The Moody Blues. Their music has always touched my life. Thier music shaped my life and touched my soul so deeply. Thier music has never ceased to amaze with all its beauty and magical , mesmerizing feel to it. Their music is just timeless. It touches souls today just as it did back then. They are truly amazing in every aspect. They dont make music like this today and that is a shame but there could only ever really be one phenomenal band such as the Moodies. Beautiful!! <3

  • THIS WAS INDEED A LIVE PERFORMANCE, I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE ACTUALLY BEEN IN THE AUDIENCE AND THE BAND MIXED WITH THE AUDIENCE AFTER THE LAST PERFORMANCE. IT WAS A ONE OF A KIND CONCERT AND I GUESS I'M AGING MYSELF!! 66 AND COUNTING

  • Justin is one of the greatest song writers ever.

  • Who cares just listen and let them take you away!

  • ...just close your eyes...and, listen to their music. There's no other like them. I've other favorite bands, but, these guys are one of a kind. So many memories of listening to them in an "enhanced state of mind", if you knowwhatImean ... lying on the floor of my apartment. Black lights on, posters everywhere in my room. Incense, lava lamp LOL ... some great times in the late 60s, early 70s.

  • Beautiful, hard to believe that it was 40 years ago...***sigh***...many years, friends and ladies missing along the way...

  • How could anyone give this a thumbs down?!

    idiots.....

  • I have always been a fan of this band....they were such an influence for later bands, such as........Pink Floyd for one......There won't ever be another band like them.....unfortunately.....but we have these wonderful memories and music!!!!! Blessed Be!!!!!

  • cant believe the moodies are not in the rock n roll hall of fame ! that is soooo not right..they are such an incredible group - such talent - gave us so many beautiful songs....♫

  • Just beautiful. Thank you.

  • Obviously not the original studio recording, as anyone who has it knows.

  • Who cares its a great song nonetheless!

  • By the way, do you realize that the Moody Blues, who gave us symphonic rock and who gave us some of the most incredible songs ever recorded, are NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? The RR Hall is just a big joke. Mahalia Jackson and Bill Monroe are in the RR Hall, but not the Moody Blues. There are probably 15 artists in the Hall who shouldn't be and 15-20 artist not in the Hall who should be. The Moody Blues are the most glaring example and should have been in long ago!

  • @aseventh You have that right, The Moody Blues difinitely should have been in RRHofF!! The same for Linda Rondstadt, what is wrong with these powers to be!!!

  • There is no question that this is a live performance and anyone who thinks differently must be living in a parallel universe. Justin even sang the third and second verses in reverse order from the studio version.

  • As a fan for OVER 30 years...listened to this track many ways live, memorex etc..the vocals here are definetely LIVE!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @brofranomo I am sorry that you feel that way. I feel that the ones that Justin Hayward are singing the vocals are live and the rest of the songs are the studio versions ones. that's all I was saying. I am not trying to insult anyone here. I have listened to them many a times and that what I hear. The music is studio version but Justin's voice sounds different than the studio version ones to me. JMHO. Peace

  • @MoodiesFan bromide can't help being a f++king negative tw+t, cos he doesn't actually hear the music. Just feel sorry for him!

  • @MoodiesFan Thats what I hear also, and i still love them too .Far out!!!!!!!!!!

  • @brofranomo I agree , But I'm glad it's on here.. It's great to see them from 1970 . I 've been to one of their shows and it had to be like this one, too perfect . I've been a fan for more than 40 yrs. I remember hearing - Nights iin white satin- for the first time on my school bus and said to myself - Thats a Hit Song !!

  • @brofranomo Sorry if you feel insulted, but these versions do not sound like the studio versions at all!

  • @PiggusVomitus THANK YOU! Someone who has proof! No proof from brofranomo. LOVE THIS!

  • @PiggusVomitus brofanomo doesn't listen! I've tried, and I'm surprised he's still posting here.. I asked him to compare to the studio recording, but he didn't! Some of these clips were dubbed with the full studio recording after the event, so he (wrongly) thinks the entire show was lip synched. I explained the show was live vocal, and flute over the pre-recorded studio instrumental tracks. This was a carefully orchestrated production which was both live and pre-recorded.

  • @brofranomo of course this is live! I can't believe anyone would think otherwise. LISTEN!!!

  • Comment removed

  • @brofranomo for those of you fretting over the live/synched aspect of this performance, it was explained on another song video that the audio for this concert was lost, so another concert audio was used.

  • @dardyani No! this show was live vocal over the prerecorded studio tracks. Since the studio tracks are virtually the same tempo as the full studio version, some of the clips were later dubbed with the full studio version, thus the audio could be added later and be in perfect synch with the video. This clip is live vocal over pre-recorded instrumental tracks, the same instrumental tracks as heard in the actual studio version.

  • @brofranomo for those of you fretting over the live/synched aspect of this performance, it was explained on another song video that the audio for this concert was lost, so another concert audio was used.

  • my fav. song from Justin - can hear it all time long...

  • No words... gold masterpiece

  • Acoustic guitar track is from the studio. Flute studio track is played against Thomas's live performance, I think.

    Lyrics are live here, too.

Not sure why The Moody Blues were so into using studio sounds for their performances.

  • @efdeees NOT SURE WHY EITHER, BUT I DID SEE THEM LIVE IN 1972 AT CHICAGO STADIUM, WHAT A GREAT PERFORMANCE, AT THE TIME THEY WERE TOURING WITH SEVENTH SOJOURN

  • Breathtakingly Gorgeous Sonics..........

    *sigh*

  • If music is the wine of the Gods.....The Moody Blues are not from our system......

This group have been my favorites from the first time I ever heard them...like 40+ yrs ago... God bless them all!

  • Excellent! Simply excellent.

  • Just sit back, close your eyes and let them take you on a journey in your mind. Their soft blend of sound and story takes you on such a relaxing natural high. This is one of the all time greatest groups with one of the most unique sounds, a true treasure to those of us from that era.

  • lasttrain, the cassette went around the moon and then was presented to the moodies, it is on my channel, with regis and kathy , sorry

  • ....Moodys.....Like ....Fire Flickering....On The Stage.......Legends From The Beginning.......

  • What a pure pleasure to watch and listen...

On of my favorite all-time bands, and such a beautiful song

MANY thanks for posting this and the other clips

  • The Mooodie's ethereal quality seemed to essentially die when Mike left. Love the mellotron arrangement in this song.

  • I heard that A copy of "Days of Future Past" was placed in a sort of time capsul on the moon.

    Anyone else heard of this?

  • Beautiful this one is for you Johnnie xx

  • Beautiful, this one is for you 'Big Brother Johnnie' R.I.P XXXX

  • OMG, never dreamed of seeing them performing this when I was listening to that more and more scratchy LP back in the seventies up in this Northern country far away. I still just love this music!

  • i love it!

  • Sorry redbird we take our Justin very serious

  • erl hell yeah Justin in white shirts! Bring it!

  • That keyboard player has cool a whiskey voice....I wonder how one gets one?

  • And GOD...wasn't Justin gorgeous.....uh, excuse me...still is. At 63 years of age...still got IT.

  • OH YES !

  • OMG! I love this song! I used to play the LP and play this bit over and over....it's such a magical bit of music, to me.

  • @Jinchengfan it sends shivers down the spine... Not like today's mindless, souless digitally produced dross. that spews out of phones everywhere!

  • what an awesome band, the harmonies between justin, ray and john are unreal, justin's voice one of the smoothest ever, this song being just one example, ray is a great flute player..............

  • Another year has passed and the mood of this song still brings greatness to my day. Thank You Moody Blues for being a great aspect in my life. I think if heaven had a sound it is the Moody Blues! Lots of love goes out to Christi, happy New Year Baby!

  • Call the fashion police.Justin stole Jerry Seinfelds puffy shirt.

  • This video is from 1970--LONG before the Seinfeld puffy shirt episode. The Seinfeld writing staff probably got their idea from Justin's already established wardrobe. I've been to many MB's concerts and Justin still wears such a shirt, which, I might add, I think looks great on him!

  • It was a joke. You mean Seinfeld wasn't on in 1970.You seem very wise do you have any stock tips?

  • My favorite song from that great band- as well as Nights in White Satin.

  • I have seen The Moody Blues four times. Three times in the last five years and once in the 70s, when I was very young, fell in love with them. This is one of my favorite songs, so many favorite songs.Gonna go see them again 3-16 in Knox. Tn. Love The Moodies so very much!!

  • I think this is a Michael Pinder song. He was the spiritual heart of the Moodys. Love the song. Thanks.

  • No XOkie, this is a Justin Hayward/Ray Thomas song

  • are you talking to me?
