I have a project essential with an ortofon 3E. It's been fine since I got it but earlier the disortion got quite bad throughout, it comes with a protractor and plastic project counter weight adjustment thingy which I have used. However I have no idea how to 'adjust the alignment', it seems to fit in the square fine. any help?
That was very good EXCEPT... I cringed when you adjusted the headshell screws without supporting the cartridge. It's important that the cartridge is pointed straight ahead and to properly do that you have to remove the headshell repeatedly during the protractor process. In the final adjustment the screws must be tight and the cartridge has to be properly aligned when looked at from underneath.
Awesome video Paul question though I have this record player that I just started to set up what is the wire in the back of the player that has the shape of a fork? I don't know where it goes
Nice vid! I haven't used a record player in I don't know how long. I'm thinking about getting one thats "direct drive" instead of a "belt drive". Also nice poster on yr wall there. MBV is one of my favorite bands.
by the way.....thanks for your very informative video, mbvglider!!! very comprehensive step by step process, which is the way it should be done! kudos!!
actually a headshell doesn't "cover" the needle. the person asked about "the thing that covers the needle"....and that is a stylus guard. the "thing the that the cartridge is MOUNTED ON....that is a headshell. and i know the difference between the two, thank you. i didn't just start using a turntable yesterday.
Well done Paul, that was a great explanation, and I'm glad you covered VTA adjustment and cartridge alignment. I once made a video on tonearm set up with a Rega deck. Their tonearms are slightly different and don't have VTA adjustment (or detachable headshells) so I don't cover VTA in my guide. Rega cartridge alignment uses a different protractor from yours, but really it's something a dealer should do when fitting the cart! Your demo sounded great at the end - a proper stereo transfer! Thanks.
Hello, i have some problems with the alignment of the needle, stanton says that the st 150 has Effective Arm Length 194mm and the technics (depends on markII or markI) Effective length: 220mm (mk1), 230mm (mk2) so the length of the tone arm dont match at all.. I have an st 150 with an tonar headsell and a ortofon OM DJ (E) cartridge... what is ur advice to do? and what is the difference between mounting distance and effective length? overhang and such? thanks greets from Amsterdam
@dancraggs No, it doesn't. Think about it. If you raised a see-saw five inches above or dropped it five inches below the ground, it would still balance the same. The balancing on a lever is all about how much weight is on either side of the balancing point (i.e. fulcrum).
You don't have to apologize for every detail you think we will maybe comment on. I really enjoyed watching this so no worries i think i speak for many seeing this.
Wow !!... this is the most complete tutorial I found about how to better balance and performance of the arm on a turntable, Many Thanks for the tips and especially by the link of Protractors. Greetings.
my balance wait for a technics 1200mk5 is not screwing in or out i push it in and it clicks in but when i turn it it doesnt move forward or backward...can you please help?
Looks like a black pearl stylus! Great informational video. Not boring at all! Thanks for posting this brother! The technics 1300 which I have is incredible. You have great sound and tone from this setup! The resurgence of vinyl is second to none. After 1500 CD's now I have approx. 500 albums mainly 180-200 gram virgin vinyl and the sound is much better than a CD! All the Best!
A question: using the protractor, how do you manage to see through the headshell in order to align the vertical lines paralel to the cartridge? The horizontals are easy, it's right there, but I find it kinda hard to see the others. AND - Do you check them by facing the front of the cartridge, trying to check the paralellism on both lines at the same time or do you check one side at a time?
Hey, hod the phone. The Vinyl Engine seems to have been off the air a couple of weeks now. One keeps getting re-directed to Google's home page. Have tried several times; dunno what's going on!
@nadix001 Everybody disagrees on anti-skate and honestly, I have a Pro-Ject turntable on which I never set the anti-skating and I'm not sure it really does anything.
@mbvglider Hi dear friend. The antiskating is really important. THis is to compensate the pull force of a round record. If you dont set it also the stylus will be pulled in the -> direction instead of straight forward (play a record set AS to0 and watch the stylus). If you see the scale of your stylus pressure and the scale of the antiskating you see normally on a hifi TT it's the same.If i put my stylus weight on 1,5 i also have to set the anti-skate to 1,5 (depends on elliptical or spherical
@nadix001 ....that is not an absolute. all cartridges behave differently, so as a general rule, setting the antiskate to the same value as the tracking force is a STARTING POINT, and then microadjust high or low. antiskating adjustment should be done in combination by sight and by ear.
Thanks Paul! A comprehensive video. I've made a similar video which focuses more on the hi-fi, as opposed to DJ-ing Turntables. As Paul says, not all turntables have VTA - mine doesn't as the makers say this is not really crucial. Also, all that cartridge wriggling around should have been done by the dealer - hi fi decks don't have interchangeable headshells. My video shows how to use a special record to set up the antiskate, and also tracking weight is a lot lighter - 2.5g is drill level!
i got an older technics and am looking to upgrade. i wanna spend around 150-200. ive been looking at the stanton t.52 or t.55. is there anything else out there that will give me more for my money? new technics just seem so damn pricey
There is Stanton & Numark, based on the Technics, which is still regarded as the best. I would fix the current one; buy spares via e-bay etc. Technics sadly have just stopped building them.
i am a completely noob i bought a Reloop MK3 turntable and i think its quite ok... but i just have a stereo (Yamaha CDX) und i connected the Turntable to the AUX input...
jeah - pretty fuckin bad sound (no bass at all) and so extremely quiet that i have to turn my Yamaha to absolute maximum to hear anything!!!
So my question is - what can i do to have a better sound?

@Afrorager18 That is the grounding wire. On the back of your preamp or receiver, you should see a little place where you can screw that in.

I would've thought that setting the arm height at the end pretty much negates any tracking weight adjustments you've done before that.

hi everyone, I'm new to turntables, Ive been using CDJs for more than one year, does this tutorial applies if I have straight arm TTs?
carnerotron 1 year ago
@carnerotron Yes but you should use a different protractor for a straight arm table you will find these at vinyl Engine

Just checked again; Vinyl Engine still down. Could be worth checking a few other sites that might have tone arm mounting graphs.

great vid man, just wondering, how much was this turntable?
emyandmatty 2 years ago
Nope, antiskating must be set to equal with tracking weight. Of course it can be precisely set with a measuring record.

Good job. I finish off my setup by using a calibration record that has a section without grooves. I adjust the anti-skate setting using that.
