A cover is where a band takes an existing song and puts their own spin on it with their own musical style. For a good example of this, see Johnny Cash's rendition of Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" - very different sound, same (or similar) lyrics - Cash left out some of the swearing and personalized it a bit here and there.
