That white PGM is one of the coolest PGM-models ever made. Couple of weeks ago, I visited a local Ibanez store, but unfortunately the newest PGM was a huge disapointment. I guess I've always loved maple necks. After testing JEM and Satriani models and so on. I decided to go with the Andy Timmons signature. It's way more versatile and it has never let me down. Althought, I still want that white PGM.
Most important: never give up! Paul isn't showing a video like this to show off how he's good and has a incredible technique, but he wants to teach us how to improve and get better! That's what a good teacher does! He wants the best for his students. That's the reason Paul is one of my favorite guitar players, not because of his skill, but because of the amazing person he is!!!
@Vitaum010 Practice definitely helps, but some people are naturally gifted. Paul is one of the most naturally gifted players around. You're hands are either big with very long, tapered fingers...or they're not. No amount of practice can make up for a genetic advantage like that. Not to mention, everyone sounds different when they play. It's as identifiable as a human voice. In some cases, more. Practice can only make up for a fraction of that, as well.
@yngvaigilbsteen I agree with ya when you say "some people are naturally gifted" but i disagree with the hands sizes, hand size has nothing to do with it. Bjango rheinhart has 2 fingers and shreds better than most with 5. If you think paul gilbert is good because of his genetics you're never going to get to that level thinking like that. Its ALL about practice and practice is what develops your musical voice.
@TommyChong101 So, by your rationale, Paul and Django are better than everyone...simply because they had more practice time? If that were true, everyone would eventually be on the same level and sound the same, given enough time. You can't say that there is, indeed, naturally gifted people, but then also say that it's "ALL" about practice, it's not. Django had a certain sound because of his limitation, just as Paul does because of his abilities.
@TommyChong101 Just remember that we're not talking about musicality here.. We're talking about physical ability and sound as it relates to shred and Django wouldn't have been able to do some of the things that Paul does. The stretches and the reaches simply aren't there. That's true for most people. Those people with the huge hands and long tapered fingers definitely have an advantage and certainly a certain sound that you just can't get with limited reaches.
@yngvaigilbsteen For example, I can reach an 11th on a piano. My buddy can reach barely over an octave because of his smalls hands and he absolutely rips, Why? because he has practiced for years, and its not like he limits himself to his tiny hands he absolutely rips these wide intervallic chops with these tiny hands because he found a way around it, he has a technique where he rolls his hands to reach those big interval jumps, see what i mean. ITS ALL ABOUT HOW YOU THINK!
@TommyChong101 Also, you can't compare guitar and piano, in terms of stretches and reaches. They are two different instruments. On guitar, you either can make the reach, or you can't. Piano, you have a sustain pedal to help you make a JUMP (if you have smaller hands) and the note still sustains. The note dies instantly if you lift your finger off a note on the guitar. Anyone who's been playing for a while knows how to take shortcuts on the guitar (finger close to the edge of the fret etc)
No, it's not. You can be the most clever player on the planet, but if you simply don't have the facility and physicality to play a certain way...no amount of brain power, or practice in the world is going to help you. It's even built into my phrasing. Read what I've written over again a few times and you'll get it. If you don't have it...you don't have it.
@TommyChong101 Point is, we're both saying the same thing. It's just easy to get caught up in wordage. I think we both can agree that being smart and efficient is very important and I'm sure you'll agree that, eventually....you are going to reach the limit of what someone can do, physically...on the guitar. Just like an athlete. Some people are definitely built more for sprinting rather than endurance, for example. Stretch licks...it definitely helps to have huge paws. : ) later. : )
@TommyChong101 Reach is especially important with a lick like this. You have to play this lick in this same manner to get this particular sound or effect.
@yngvaigilbsteen Buddy. Theres no friggin' way that if everyone practiced the same amount everyone would be the same you are crazy. Its all about WHAT you practice and how much thought is put into. You aren't seeing the big picture here, Yes there are naturally gifted people but that doesnt mean they didnt practice their asses off. You could be the most gifted person and still have to practice to be good. If you are limited you find ways around it, thats how the greats become great. I can reach.
@TommyChong101 "Theres no friggin' way that if everyone practiced the same amount everyone would be the same you are crazy"
Nope, just proving a point. : )
"You aren't seeing the big picture here"
I don't think you are, bro...with all due respect.
You're acting as if I said that people with smaller hands can't "rip". Of course they can...I never said they couldn't. I'm just saying that they can't necessarily "rip" the same exact licks...or "rip" in the same manner as some with large hands
Guys, first of all, he's not a monster. He trained. He studied. If we all dedicate ourselves to music, we can all play like him, better than him, or whatever is your goal! Seriously, it may sound difficult today, but if you practice a lot, you will be able to do it. I'm training because someday, I believe I will be at the same stage at guys like Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Petrucci, Mark Knopfler... because they're the ones that made me play guitar! I'll practice to reach my goal!!!
Well, Paul also has a lot of natural talent involved in it all as well. Also, his hands are giant as fuck, so he has us all beat in the nature department.
"If you're lucky, it'll come together. I'll give it a try, see how it sounds" Then he plays it perfectly. And then he does it again. Apparently Paul's 100% lucky. Unreal, Paul is a God.
If the very first stretch is too hard, then just play it starting on the 5th string, 7ht fret ;-), i started plying this lick like that, don't forget paul gilbert has huge hands.
remember, guitaristas, that even if you play this across more strings, first off the tuning would have to be different, but most importantly each string while producing the same note, have their own distinct tonal quialities and sound different even in unison with the other adjacent strings. Most of his stuff comes from challenging himself. This looks bad ass and sounds bad ass. In the end, do not question gilbert. His ways are mysteirous
just to clarify my last statement;- he says "the only reason that I CAN do it...etc.". He doesn't state if it's the only reason that he DOES do it that way. Again, I hope I'm making sense.
From a personal standpoint Gilberts way makes sense because I'm not too good at moving between strings but I can't help feeling that the stretching problems/issues outweigh the benefits. I hope that makes sense. I should also mention that I'm still at the "3chords and a 40bpm major scale" stage and this is way out of my ability, but I'm trying to gather knowledge. Thanks for any input.
I love that "carpal tunnel syndrome" feeling as much as the next man but is there any reason why this shouldn't be played across more strings? Would I be right in thinking that Gilbert plays it this way only because it's what he used as an exercise (thus, it just feels more natural to him)? (continued next post)...
An Uruk-hai had sex with Brittney Spears when she was in rehab and had a baby who was fed with kriptonite, baptized by Eddie Van Halen, raised on planet-X and brought back to earth with an implanted guitar...then became Paul Gilbert.....
It's ridiculously hard to play that cleanly and up to speed. You know that TD ending?
It's like the TD ending is the bunny hill and this is the black diamond. This is MUCH harder to play because of the big stretches strange fingerings, and obviously string skipping. All the while, you have to keep that shit muted.
I'm so glad Paul is so thorough in his explanations. Before I saw this video, I thought he picked every note. Now, with the hammer-ons and pull-offs and picking explained, I might just be able to play this before I die. lol!
Play it slow at first with a metronome and continue to work wit that for awhile and ull get it down. everything every guitar player has done you can do with time and patience.
@trevskiw2008 U need to understand how one musician kisses ass of the other to pay respect and show friendship. Ofcourse if you see paul's skill he can do what shawn does.. Also about stretched licks, HE SAID he has been practicing this for yrs and thats before he saw or met Shawn Lane. Yes I have seen the video where he mentions shawn lane and plays some of his licks (tapping), he said about the fusion yes.I am talking about Paul's skill, this guy can play what he wants to and what he hears.
@trevskiw2008 Before Paul was in Mr Big, he used to go to shows where billy sheehan was playing and from there he was amazed how he played tapping and the patters in his bass.. He went home and tried it.. This HE SAID IT himself.
I know billy Sheehan is an amazing bass player and there is truth that he did get ideas from sheehan but all i am saying is Shawn helped Paul a lot on intervalic phrasing and wide stretch licks.
Paul can not do anything anywhere near at the level Shawn could, Gilbert is really talented but Shawn was just on another planet no one can come close to what Shawn had.
"This one's from a song called 'Colorado Bulldog', and it's obviously THE SCARIEST thing that you'll ever hear... I think the only reason that i can do it is because I'm the best player ever and nothing's difficult for me". That's what he really meant, but the guy's very humble
I have seen Shawn Lane, and he was awesome indeed, but I consider him more of a jazz rock fusion kind of guy. But he was awesome, too bad he died so young. Actually I read that people say he was the fastest ever. But I'm not into jazz stuff so much, or I would've mentioned Allan Holdsworth or Frank Gambale, who I consider the scariest guys ever. It's just my opinion. But we're all talking about guitar stars, so it doesn't matter much
Yes he is a jazz fusion kind of guy :) Pauls style fits me better than Shawns. What I meant was more Shawns shred solos which involved an inhuman speed with stretches that few people can even do, much less in the speed of Shawn. I do believe he was the fastest ever, despite all the unknown youtube guitarists that claim to be faster. You can simply tell by watching his videos, the twitching-like speed of his fingers.
You're right though, all of these guitarists are amazing in their own ways :)
:O Only with Paul can an 8 second mindblower absolutely require 4 minutes and 5 seconds of step-by-step instruction! O_O Oh.. and about 7000 years of swearing at your fingers for never matching it xD haha
A very clever riff, I mean it doesn't sound the same if you play it all legato or all picking. The mix of both gives a really nice sounding lick, very original, but you can also apply this one with other scales, it works fine too.
i saw paul ,years ago, during ,the lean into it tour 3nights in a row , and he just killed it. he played a riff like this during his solo and it turns into 1 of the toughest song intros ever lol
an advice my friend.... you ask people to listen to the band first and if they like it, they will do it automatically. :)

Amen to that. The people we call "guitar heroes" are completely normal people like you and me who just practised alot.

Incredible Shawn Lane signed gilbert's Guitar.
Shawn is my favorite guitarist of all time.
Paul actually got all of his more crazy pentatonic ideas from Shawn.
Such a great player Shawn was.
trevskiw2008 2 years ago
@trevskiw2008 no he did not get that idea from Shawn.. some of it was from Billy sheehan and then he just improved on that..
realguitarshredder 2 years ago
how did he get wide stretch pentatonic ideas from a bass player?
there is a video of Paul in a clinic talking about Shawn and that he is the scariest guitar player of all time.
He said the ideas he got from Shawn were "a bunch of pentatonic ideas"
Paul Jammed with Shawn a few times and he really helped Paul break into wider interval licks so there is no denying it when Gilbert said it himself.
Shawn Lane said Paul could not handle fusion for too long without his brain exploding.
trevskiw2008 2 years ago
@trevskiw2008 U need to understand how one musician kisses ass of the other to pay respect and show friendship. Ofcourse if you see paul's skill he can do what shawn does.. Also about stretched licks, HE SAID he has been practicing this for yrs and thats before he saw or met Shawn Lane. Yes I have seen the video where he mentions shawn lane and plays some of his licks (tapping), he said about the fusion yes.I am talking about Paul's skill, this guy can play what he wants to and what he hears.
realguitarshredder 2 years ago
@trevskiw2008 Before Paul was in Mr Big, he used to go to shows where billy sheehan was playing and from there he was amazed how he played tapping and the patters in his bass.. He went home and tried it.. This HE SAID IT himself.
realguitarshredder 2 years ago

But we're all talking about guitar stars, so it doesn't matter much
mrbig71014 2 years ago
Yes he is a jazz fusion kind of guy :) Pauls style fits me better than Shawns. What I meant was more Shawns shred solos which involved an inhuman speed with stretches that few people can even do, much less in the speed of Shawn. I do believe he was the fastest ever, despite all the unknown youtube guitarists that claim to be faster. You can simply tell by watching his videos, the twitching-like speed of his fingers.
You're right though, all of these guitarists are amazing in their own ways :)

no he starts with a downstroke
Jeahbuddy 2 years ago
but by upstroke he means the first note of the second group of notes

:O Only with Paul can an 8 second mindblower absolutely require 4 minutes and 5 seconds of step-by-step instruction! O_O Oh.. and about 7000 years of swearing at your fingers for never matching it xD haha
stuartgibb 2 years ago 4
A very clever riff, I mean it doesn't sound the same if you play it all legato or all picking. The mix of both gives a really nice sounding lick, very original, but you can also apply this one with other scales, it works fine too.
genolafrite 2 years ago
in my opinion, this riff played like he does makes it sound so aggresive
mrbig71014 2 years ago
i saw paul ,years ago, during ,the lean into it tour 3nights in a row , and he just killed it. he played a riff like this during his solo and it turns into 1 of the toughest song intros ever lol
