  • amazing... I love Kristen Chenoweth

  • Candide contains the finest music ever composed for the Broadway stage. (Well, that's my opinion.) Bravo, Lenny !!!

  • How can you listen to a piece like that and not be completely in love with music by the end? And every face they show during "Make Our Garden Grow" just looks like they can't believe how much they love singing and how awesome their job is.

  • "You've been a fool and so have I, but come and be my wife."

That's the most romantic proposal right there.

  • A fun, fun, fun production of one of the best of all possible musicals.. Saw it on PBS and loved it. Thanks for making it available here to see and hear again.

  • I love the accapella part! My choir is doing this and i reaaalllyyyyy wish i was a tenor just for this song!

  • man those blue shorts are packing!

  • she's no Renee Fleming......

  • @doobeedoo58 ....but she'll do just fine.

  • omg my dad has those suspenders

  • 2 people are too lazy to make their garden grow!

  • Ainsley Hayes!!! What a voice!!

  • Ms. Pattu LuPone, love you as the Old Lady. Hope someday to see you live. I live in San Francisco, so if I ever make it to New York I hope to see you in a live show. Thank you doug

  • What's on Kristin's forehead? It has been bugging me forever.

  • @gGsuperundies that's her microphone.

  • @gGsuperundies it's a microphone! that is the way most musical theater is miked. [sigh]. i'm hoping it was only necessary for the dialogue.

  • This was so awesome!

  • 2 people's gardens did not grow.

  • It's over... And I already wanna watch it again. :] Thanks for uploading. <3

  • I love both the book and the show. This song is exquisite, and I think of it often. It is such good advice. This is what we must do... make our garden grow. Thank you for posting! :)

  • Great show, but the orchestra was pretty underwhelming during the curtain call

  • Watching this > reading Voltaire's Candide ;P

  • Hands down, one of the best moments in musical theatre.

  • greatest finale to a show. ever.

  • i love the part where it comes achepella its awesomeeee sounding!!!!! my drumline show is based on this show as well its funny and we won our chapionships based on this entire show :)

  • why is there not a LOVE button for this? <333 such a beautiful song, and Paul Groves has such a WONDERFUL voice! (Kristen Proxy-Connection: keep-alive

    Cache-Control: max-age=0

  • Candides talking voice is adorible and then he sings really low!Love it!

  • Thank you very much for the upload, I added it to the playlist of my uni chorus :)

  • Paul Groves's voice is astounding. What an instrument. Rich and well-balanced, clear diction and big power when needed but never bellowing. Just an extraordinarily handsome voice.

  • I hate to nitpick, but it would have been nice to let that last chord settle a few seconds instead of rushing into the bows. It's so beautiful.

  • Aww..... Jerome Ashby is playing French Horn in this... :(( R.I.P.

  • @HornGoddess08 He went to my alma mater! Yes, he is missed.

  • @drtmuir Yes, indeed he is missed. Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to meet him. :(

  • me too, I'm an old guy but this pretty much sums it up.

  • Hm, who exactly here would need the miking? There are three opera singers, three Broadway singers (they overlap ;)), and they are planted in front of the orchestra.

  • hey could you makes this song all one video? i love it so much!

  • goddamnit, this song makes me bawl like a baby every time I hear it. Kristin Chenoweth rox my box

  • Watch Kristin at 3:19! I think the music gave her a mini-orgasm!!

  • the second best of all candide's productions of the world - GREAT GREAT

  • I'm reading Candide now. He got beat when he met the Bulgarians!

  • Many similarities between "Make Our Garden Grow" and "Make of our Hands" from West Side Story.

Not surprising really as they were conceived at close proximity of each other.

    And both are gorgeous.

  • @maxreger100 Both are, indeed. But the difference is in the stories: "Make of Our Hands" is a sincere pledge by young lovers, before their tragedy. This is a bit older and wiser, sung by characters after they have been through much folly (their own and others') and hardship. It's got more hope than resignation, but mostly hard-earned realism. I used to think it anticlimactic and sad; now I see its truth and beauty.

  • Im taking Broadway Musical Class and have to "catch up" to the rest of the cultured world. So I trying to watch as many as I can. This is the first one I've seen. Chenoweth is amazing.

  • i was sick when i watched this for hte first time. it made me tear up and it actually cleared my sinuses. thank you bernstein, hughes, and sondheim

  • wow... that ending is so powerful and has such a good message!

  • intense

  • 2:59... Chills!!!

  • About a thousand of those views are mine. Superb!

  • i love this version of the show! kristin is a doll and all of their voices are just so pure and inviting.

  • this is very beautiful specially when everyone sings thankz for upload the whole video ur the best for that i have watched this like 4 times already soon to be more :)

  • This is the best melody ever written by anyone. Takes my breath away.

  • I love how at around 2:50, as the camera passes each character, you hear them a bit better. :)

  • Hi all I love this show and added a video if you could tell me what you think and what I should do to improve I'd be very thankful. I love this show so much <3 thanks for uploading it

  • how exactly do you pronounce cunegonde?

    is it?:

    COON-EH-GOND,

    COON-EH-GON-DAH,

    or

    COON-EH-GO-DEH

it sounds different everytime someone pronounces it. lol.

  • @ashleysamoska: I hear it as COO-NEH-GON-DAE . Just my humble opinion.

  • @aa4285

okay, that's kinda what i was thinking. thanks(:

  • @ashleysamoska It's COON-EH-GON-DUH

  • Awesome, thanks for uploading. Kristin is amazing

  • I love how you can always hear Kristin even when everyone's singing and how when she's excited she holds the note just a little bit too long. :]

  • Take time to read Leonard Bernstein's biography by Humphrey Burton to realize what a unique, strange, dynamic, neurotic, child-like, dedicated-to-music-and- the- arts person he was. There was truly only one person like him...After he died, The Good Lord broke the mold. Rest In Peace Lenny!!!!!

  • messed up but sooooo good and funny

  • yes, i watched this last year b'cos i loved Kristin Chenoweth . . . but, because I watched this I was like, WOW . I LOVE THIS ! & this led me to liking Patti LuPone (;

and let me say what I said before "I LOVE THIS!" <3 The beautiful music, the more than perfect actors & actresses, the awesome story line . . . how could you not fall in love with this ? It warms my heart, honestly . gah, I'm gushing ! haha .

"everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds."

  • I started to watch the musical because I love Kristin Chenoweth so much, she has pure talent and I think it's amazing but now I love the whole story and was really an amazing musical to see !!!

  • When the orchestra stops at 2.58 and the voices go for it, its just wonderful.

  • Rushed.

  • The music is so freakin' beautiful. :')

  • simply wonderful!!!!!

  • i watched it and i loved it. It's fantastic!

  • Voltaire was extremely sentimenal, as was the fashion of the 18th century. His tragedies, which were considered the equals to those of Corneille and Racine (at the time) are no longer esteemed, largely due to the sentimentalism.

  • I was at this performance, it wasn't Broadway, but at the NY Philharmonic (Saturday Night Performance). It was very well received.

  • perhaps Bernstein's most beautiful statement.

  • Wow this was amazing I had the best time watching this! The music is so lovely, and it was great to hear the lyrics and understand them (as opposed to seeing the swedish version which I enjoyed anyways!). Thanks so much for posting!

  • This production should have toured the world. (Honestly, I think it would have helped foreign relations, but I'm digressing.) Tears stream down my face when I see this. Bernstein was a genius.

  • I just adore Marin Alsop!

  • The ending is much more romantic than Voltaire's, but it's all for the best, right?

  • Voltaire's is more honest, this is more camp.

  • NB. but still very beautiful

  • it may be campy, but it still pays an excellent homage to voltaire's. the basic idea of the ending of voltaire's translates pretty well to the end of this operetta.

  • not really.....this is a very saccharine ending, saved from bathos by an excellent score.

  • but the point is that it stays true to voltaire's message of "cultivating your garden."

  • voltaire was being ironic!! not sentimental. there's a considerable difference.

  • no. the "we must cultivating the garden" part was sincere. the whole point of candide was that voltaire wanted to say that humans can't find happiness in all the things that the unhappy people in candide chase after. only those who make their own happiness (the kind old muslim man) can achieve happiness.

  • well, i disagree. all readings are valid, even naive ones....i wish you well and hope your garden flourishes :-)

  • @musicalpositron In the best of all possible worlds!

  • @musicalpositron I love you. Well, your comment. For the best of all possible reasons though...

  • The song itself is so exquisite--especially the a cappella section. I get chills pretty much anytime I hear it sung decently, but this version is one of my favorites. And I swear I can almost see the performers being in awe of the song even as they sing it--watch them at 1:10 just before Kristin begins her verse.

  • Kristin Chenoweth is such a bad ass

  • @shaxnerd418 hells yeah!

  • This version of Candide is my favorite to watch. To listen to.......unfortunately I'm gonna have to say nothing beats Lenny's final cast. No offense! I'm a HUGE fan of Cheno but I like it more operatic. But this version is hilarious!

  • June is a better singer. But Cheno is funneh

  • @kalindoscopy true. its just that June is so boring in absolutely EVERYTHING she sings. Cheno still is a very good singer, and she has the acting through her voice which is one of the most important things of singing. if no one wants to listen to you, what's the point of having such a great voice? Personally, i believe Cheno is WAY BEYOND June

  • this gives me chills every time i listen to it Brava!!!!!

  • yes me to this song gives me so much goosebumps! i love it and i love kristin sooooooooooo much!!

  • The Acapella part is also very very very powerful !!

  • This song gives me goosebumps everytime i hear it. Very powerful.

  • Olé, Viva Lenny y viva Voltaire.... Genial.

  • I really thought they should have ended with a kiss instead of a hug

    but never the less, AWESOME!!!!!

  • Theys ing in such unison that they even stop to take a breath at the same time...amazing, all of them, but I'm such a sucker for Kristin's singing!

  • Wow!

  • This version is suprisingly kick ass.. and I've seen so many versions of it done (the Kennedy honors one was so rushed, it was painful). I never thought I'd be rooting for Kristin's team over the original.

  • BRAVO!! BRAVO!!!!

    *standing ovation*

  • i totally love kristin chenoweth and this show, expecially this part its very amazing!!

  • absolutely amazing show :D

  • I love how everyone stands for patti =) She is amazing. ( So is kristin)

  • So kristen plays a woman who ever so cleverly avoided std`s in a constant battle to keep her panties on. I feel a bit lost.

  • KRISTIN, plays a girl that always seems to lose her sense of virginity (if that's possible after being raped by a soldier regment) because of her love Candide thy're always losing themselves . . . got it? :D

  • I get it. (kristin. I`m a wicked fan. I should know that.) It`s kinda hard for me to see that through the comedy. : )

  • I took about half of the play to understand it too . . . but it's wonderful!!!!!

  • I love this version of Candide! The DVD is available on Amazon. A "must buy" if you're a Patti Lupone/Kristen Chenoweth fan. Paul Groves as Candide is amazing!

  • This is my favourite song... so call me romantic, lol.

  • This song is just so moving.

  • What a show. Pity the DVD is only available in RC 1 ... *weeps*

  • Absolutely phenomenal! I loved how Patti danced off the stage all happily at the end. Truly great show. ^^ Thanks for uploading it!

  • absoloutely loved it! thank you for posting this!! AMAZING!

  • wowowowowowowowowowow amamzing show

  • This cast was superb, I of course love Kristin and Patti, but Paul Groves was also fantastic as Candide

  • wow this was truely breathtaking and hilarious...yes the plot was....no comment but yeah. great none the less

Patti Lupone twas fantastic as always as was Kristin Chenoweth.

  • Thanks so much for uploading this!

It gave me shivers up my spine when everyone sung together in the finale!

Kristin chenoweth basically wows me and blows me away everytime she sings!

    <3

  • I LOVED IT! Ha i was actually clapping at the end! Aah Candide was so cute So glad it was a happy ending hehe. Thankyou soooooo much for posting the whole thing, I loved it!

  • the big guy at 4:38...is that Stanford Olsen? the opera singer wo played Pirelli in the Sweeney Concerts with Patti Lupone and George Hearn?

  • Was this at the Met, or...?

  • avery fischer is generally where the great performances occur, I sang there last year and Im pretty sure its avery
