How can you listen to a piece like that and not be completely in love with music by the end? And every face they show during "Make Our Garden Grow" just looks like they can't believe how much they love singing and how awesome their job is.
A fun, fun, fun production of one of the best of all possible musicals.. Saw it on PBS and loved it. Thanks for making it available here to see and hear again.
Ms. Pattu LuPone, love you as the Old Lady. Hope someday to see you live. I live in San Francisco, so if I ever make it to New York I hope to see you in a live show. Thank you doug

why is there not a LOVE button for this? <333 such a beautiful song, and Paul Groves has such a WONDERFUL voice! (Kristen Proxy-Connection: keep-alive
Paul Groves's voice is astounding. What an instrument. Rich and well-balanced, clear diction and big power when needed but never bellowing. Just an extraordinarily handsome voice.
Hm, who exactly here would need the miking? There are three opera singers, three Broadway singers (they overlap ;)), and they are planted in front of the orchestra.
@maxreger100 Both are, indeed. But the difference is in the stories: "Make of Our Hands" is a sincere pledge by young lovers, before their tragedy. This is a bit older and wiser, sung by characters after they have been through much folly (their own and others') and hardship. It's got more hope than resignation, but mostly hard-earned realism. I used to think it anticlimactic and sad; now I see its truth and beauty.
Im taking Broadway Musical Class and have to "catch up" to the rest of the cultured world. So I trying to watch as many as I can. This is the first one I've seen. Chenoweth is amazing.

Take time to read Leonard Bernstein's biography by Humphrey Burton to realize what a unique, strange, dynamic, neurotic, child-like, dedicated-to-music-and- the- arts person he was. There was truly only one person like him...After he died, The Good Lord broke the mold. Rest In Peace Lenny!!!!!
yes, i watched this last year b'cos i loved Kristin Chenoweth . . . but, because I watched this I was like, WOW . I LOVE THIS ! & this led me to liking Patti LuPone (;
and let me say what I said before "I LOVE THIS!" <3 The beautiful music, the more than perfect actors & actresses, the awesome story line . . . how could you not fall in love with this ? It warms my heart, honestly . gah, I'm gushing ! haha .
"everything is for the best in this best of all possible worlds."
I started to watch the musical because I love Kristin Chenoweth so much, she has pure talent and I think it's amazing but now I love the whole story and was really an amazing musical to see !!!
Voltaire was extremely sentimenal, as was the fashion of the 18th century. His tragedies, which were considered the equals to those of Corneille and Racine (at the time) are no longer esteemed, largely due to the sentimentalism.
Wow this was amazing I had the best time watching this! The music is so lovely, and it was great to hear the lyrics and understand them (as opposed to seeing the swedish version which I enjoyed anyways!). Thanks so much for posting!
This production should have toured the world. (Honestly, I think it would have helped foreign relations, but I'm digressing.) Tears stream down my face when I see this. Bernstein was a genius.
it may be campy, but it still pays an excellent homage to voltaire's. the basic idea of the ending of voltaire's translates pretty well to the end of this operetta.
no. the "we must cultivating the garden" part was sincere. the whole point of candide was that voltaire wanted to say that humans can't find happiness in all the things that the unhappy people in candide chase after. only those who make their own happiness (the kind old muslim man) can achieve happiness.
The song itself is so exquisite--especially the a cappella section. I get chills pretty much anytime I hear it sung decently, but this version is one of my favorites. And I swear I can almost see the performers being in awe of the song even as they sing it--watch them at 1:10 just before Kristin begins her verse.
This version of Candide is my favorite to watch. To listen to.......unfortunately I'm gonna have to say nothing beats Lenny's final cast. No offense! I'm a HUGE fan of Cheno but I like it more operatic. But this version is hilarious!
@kalindoscopy true. its just that June is so boring in absolutely EVERYTHING she sings. Cheno still is a very good singer, and she has the acting through her voice which is one of the most important things of singing. if no one wants to listen to you, what's the point of having such a great voice? Personally, i believe Cheno is WAY BEYOND June
This version is suprisingly kick ass.. and I've seen so many versions of it done (the Kennedy honors one was so rushed, it was painful). I never thought I'd be rooting for Kristin's team over the original.

Many similarities between "Make Our Garden Grow" and "Make of our Hands" from West Side Story.
Not surprising really as they were conceived at close proximity of each other.
And both are gorgeous.
