Sam Bush said this song was named from his dog drinking water He was watching his dog drink water one day. He said the dog would lap up water with his tongue seven times and stop, then lap seven more times and stop and so on.
yeah I agree with you hillbilly j dont get me wrong ive learned a lot of stuff from Bela, and he will always be one of my favs. How ever Eric Weissberg was doing all of that and playing with Boston Symphony in 1967.lets not forget the early greats of the 5 string.Bela sure didnt.
great coments guys but if you look back before there was a Bela there was Bobby Thompson,Bill Keith,Courtney Johnson, Alan Munde and the Great Pat Cloud... look them up and get u some!!!!!
True and all those guys were great, but I still belive Bela is the best. Not only did he master Scruggs, Melodic and Single String styles, he used them in a way which wasn't typical of any other player. The man plays classical music on a banjo! I think Bela said he started when he was 15, when he was 20 he put out his 1st solo album and it had Jazz peices on it. In just 5 years he had mastered 3 finger jazz banjo, in a way no one else did or has since. So yeah, Bela is best for me. Just MHO.

instrumentals suck. the only thing worse than an instrumental is the bluegrass instrumental when everyone has to do a measure and make an ass out of themself. I'm so thankful John Cowen didn't have the audacity to partake of said endeavor.
Newgrass was great.. that doesn't change the fact that instrumentals suck.
If you don´t like this, go somewhere else and listen to idiotic Garth Brooks or how is he called. This is one of the best instrumentals ever written and noone else is able to play it like Béla, Sam, John and Pat .... so go to hell !!
Most of Bela Fleck's influences are jazz and celtic music, mixed with traditional bluegrass this was the result, pioneering. Bela has been the most influential person in all the bands hes been in, with Sam Bush as his mentor. John Cowan is a fantastic talent, Pat Flynn is, well, Pat flynn..... incomparable talent , brilliant posting
This song was nominated for a grammy in 85 or 86. they broke up sometime after that. The best musically in the business. They just couldn't get a national hit.Garth Brooks used their arraignment of Calling Baton Rouge and was a big hit,They didn't even get a mention.
One example I always like to use is Charlie Watts with The Stones. He's probably the most simplistic drummer ever...but it just wouldn't be The Stones anymore with someone like Neil Peart drumming. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying Cowan is simplistic, he's awesome! But if everyone played the exact same mind bending riffs, what good would that be?
New Grass Revival will always be the best progressive bluegrass band. They stretched so far from bluegrass you can hardly put them in that genre. John Cowan was selected by Sam for his strength on the bass. He was a band member for a while before he ever started singing. Victor is incredible but they shouldn't be compared...apples and oranges.
All you fuckers hating on John Cowan are sellouts. You cant compair Wooten to Cowan...and if you try, Newgrass Revival revolutionized the bluegrass world, so my hat goes of to JOHN COWAN
John Cowan has one of the finest voices in Bluegrass if not any musical format. Victor better be a good bass player beacause he can't sing for shit. And I'd rather sing like Cowan any day than just be a good bass player.
BluegrassLibrary, you have a great collection of good quality video in your library. You don't find too much in the way of good stuff recorded in the 80s out there. Thanks for sharing your videos with us.
It's not really fair to compare anyone to Victor. John Cowan is very solid & vocally, he's one of the greats. No comment on the haircut except, in his defense, it was the 80's. LOL

The only weak link is the bass player. Once one has heard Victor playin' with Bela one comes to expect the bass to be able to keep up. This guy plods along behind. And as for the hair cut...LOL
You also have to remember that they are playing bluegrass, so flashy bass work is not their first priority. I love Victor, but you can't use the Flecktones to put John Cowan down.
From 1:39 to the end, all the instruments (except the bass) reach another level that, while it can still be called "Bluegrass", in my opinion transends bluegrass. When that actually happens the bass *for me* becomes annoying in that it just continues to plod. In my opinion Victor (and others, though not many others) could have made it way more interesting while still keeping the integrity of the genre.
birdstuck has a point, but if he combs his hair right no one will notice. (rimshot)
Some of these guys are in the band because they can sing. Johnny rocks ok - be's no Victor but who is? I watch this and think wouldn't it be nice if Jimmy Rosenberg were on guitar instead of Rev. Pat, but you cain't always get . .
Incredible. No other description comes close!

Superb and unmatched musicianship by all. Bela's picking was astounding and to read the compliment from Jon Eric - that says it all. Thanks.
