my rats are like this as well but i recently got a kitten and my rats seem egar to met the kitten they seem quite hyper. i put the kitten and the rats on the sofa and the rats chased the kittens tail but i keep on picking up the rats in chase the kitten hurts i just cant seem to be able to trust them together.has any one got any good ways in intereducing rats to a kitten.

@Weaver1859 handle them more... dont let them run free out the cage unless they go "thorugh you" ie when you take them out spend at least a few minutes playing with them and if they try to do one just put them back in the cage... repeat until theyre used to you!! one of mine still gives us "warning nips" but theyre pretty smart to this technique

Oh yes, we have 3 female rats, and getting them to sit still for any kind of cuddle time is almost impossible. But you have to love these rare moments!! :P

@hannahishkindaperson i have 2 female rats that are 11 months old and a cat. At first my cat thought i had bought them for her to play with but after a while she realises they are my pets and just ignores them but the rats dont like to see her they freeze up then run and hide. :)

I've just recently got 9 week old two female rats, and the second day that I had them, one was sitting on my lap and allowing me to pet her in a similar way - not falling asleep mind, but it's early days. I think it's because she has been handled by the breeder while she was younger.

The petting reminds them of their mother licking them. That's why they love it so much. Rats are very complex intelligent and emotional creatures. The have empathy for their own! I came lot love rats in a big way ever since I read up on them.

I have 4 rats, two cats, and two dogs. the dogs run the other way and will have nothing to do with the rats but my one kitten actually likes to go in the rats cage and lay down with them or steal their food. if you start the cats young enough they would never think twice about hurting the rats other then the occasional accidental to rough play

Not rare ive had 4 female rats if you pay with them a lot they are not usually hyper... and they like it by there jaw right under the ear most every body does.

i have 2 female pet rats are and there coming up 9 months and at first they was very hyper but now they fall a sleep on the couch. i try to bring them out as much as possible. i have trained them to spin, come to there name. when i show people my rats they think there dirty animals when infact there really clean i am getting a cat next summer i hope they get along .......

@hannahishkindaperson I would get a young kitten and introduce them while it is young. I wouldn't worry two much about the rats getting along with it, but an adult cat would be more likely to go after a rodent of any type. I have 6 rats and a dog. I introduced my dog molly when she was a 8 week old puppy and she is great with them. bottom line though you never ever leave different species alone together no matter how well they get along.

@hannahishkindaperson if you bring the cat up from a young age with the rats they will be fine i had 2 rats and mixed them in with my cat the rat bite her 2-3 times and after that the rat rode on the cats back and they played together.

I have three little girls that I love to death, Willow, Daisy and Lilly. Willow is so mellow, but the other two are all over, haha. I think its because she was a breeder before I got her, and maybe the babies mellowed her out.

My rat Yuka used to do this, but she recently passed of a tumor in her

abdomen. It had an opening in it and it caused her lungs/abdomen to fill

up with liquid so she had to be put down.

She's not dying.... my rat does the same thing if you rub her cheeks and neck like this person is doing to Kaylee... she absolutley loves it and it makes her sleepy. When I finish rubbing her cheeks she pops right up and is all hyper again. They like to be massaged and rubbed! :)

@TheKenfig when cornered, the first thing a domestic rat will do is pee. i have no idea what a wild rat would do except bite whatever came near them. the only reason they would go for your jugular is if it were the closest thing to them. and while wild rats in areas infested by wild rats have been known to bite humans as they sleep, those are wild rats. anyone with brains would stay away from wild animals, including wild rats. but most misconceptions about pet rats are from hollywood.

@angelratgirl Wild rats do go for your jugular, though it's not from any knowledge of it, they simply attempt to attack towards the light and looking up the light is roughly where your head is :) hence where the myth comes from. Just thought you might find that interesting :P but i agree with what you say.

Very sweet. I've only owned male rats myself, and while they are very hyper in their early years, once they pass the 18month mark, they tend to slow down, and stay 'cuddled' for much longer periods of time :D
