it actually started out as a school for children (for the blind i think),then the children grew up.... and there was no where for them to go, i believe it then changed to a mental institution. But since it was totally self contained, and self sufficient, it was considered a village in its own rite. i suppose it can be considered either... an institution, or a village... thats usually dependent on the fact that they supplied their own power for the entire village.

your wrong, it was not a true village. letchworth was an instituition, for the feeble-minded and disabled. It was an asylum of sorts.

churches, post office, maintenance department, bakery, library, hospital etc.. were closed down, everyone seemingly just picked up and walked out....
