uh lets see... well like if you rest your thumb on the pickup, your plucking fingers are probably directly over the pickups... try just moving them to the side so the strings don't hit the pickups

Of personal experience its alot easier to keep it on the A because of the steady A0's all along the first part. You know it goes like:

I started learning this song from the day I started learning bass. It took me about 8 months (I think) to be able to nail it.

I generally practice most days for an hour or two in the evenings. It's fun to just pick it up and jam for a bit.

Most of the time was needed to get enough stamina in my arms to play the song all the way through without my hands crapping out. Learning the song itself wasn't that difficult though...
