I think because noise canceling works via circuitry that adds an inverse sound wave of what it hears around you to what you're listening to to cancel it out. Crazy, but it seems to work. I have some cheapo type noise canceling ear phones, and there are actually little mics on the outer housing of the cups to pick up outside sounds. HArd to explain but cool.
