This performance was fantastic... When I saw it at the cinema you could've heard a pin drop. Carey Mulligan is so perfectly expressive and the piano arrangement is beautiful.
"Shame" is among the most stunning films I've experienced. It is brilliant. I saw it twice, and plan to see it a third time. As director McQueen probably intended, the Chelsea scenes with the store "Bed, Bath and Beyond" in the distant background created an apt alternative title for this movie. Carey Mulligan's arresting song underscores the film's message about deeper and lasting impact that comes from fractured relationships — especially if the most fractured relationship is with oneself.
I usually don't empathize with movie characters, but when Brandon began to cry, I felt so much sympathy for he and Sissy. VERY powerful scene. The song is a perfect match: the lyrics reflect determination, innocence perhaps, and the promise of a better future. Did it remind him of his childhood, and the abuse he and Sissy almost surely endured? There was no mention of parents in the movie; no mention of other relatives. All they really had was each other.
Cheap movies make you cry with pitty or a simple happy conclusion. good movies make you cry when a character has earned your investment and care then sees tragedy or success. Great movies make you cry with scenes like this. I don't care if the oscars or anybody else for that matter passes up on this movie, It'll stay with me and I will treasure it. Thank you Steve, Michael, Carey and everyone else.
These feelings are why we still go to the movies. Wish me luck as a filmmaker it's getting harder and harder to retain the real. This movie made me feel all sorts of things. Completely emotional. Fantastic.
okay...im not the only one...was thinking "c'mon now carey, i ain't got enough tissue in my purse right now"...i was 'Beautifully DEVASTATED" by that arrangement/performance!!!
There's definitely sadness...disillusionment...weariness...loneliness...a little girl's fright...and I can imagine a facade that is no longer kept up by the person behind it but is still up solely by being stuck to the face for too long.

does anyone know the really dancing song that came on in the movie in the scene where his boss asks that grey suited blonde girl for a dance?

You can really understand her pain and sadness ,they come out from every single word of this beautiful but melancholic song.

Saw "Shame" today. This made me tear up a little. Truly haunting. Almost unbearable.

Congrats to pianist. Gorgeous sequence of haunting, cascading chords at the 3.39 point. It will be a "Shame" if this song doesn't win some awards.

I think this scene moved me more than the whole entire movie, who was quite disappointing. But those 5 minutes are simply breath taking.

Liza who? Frank...what's his name?
This is such a beautiful song. Too bad most people come away talking about something else after seeing this film. Way to own it, Carey!

Not sure if I hear hopelessness in the song.

Maybe that IS hopelessness? It's possible....
