  • Just excellent.Great arrangement too.Thankyou for your contribution to the Bach variations.

  • I've been playing this composition for many years now (really, many years).... and now that I watch this video it seems like I haven't even learned it yet! This guy is so damn good!!

  • this guy is spectacular.

  • WOW!

  • Kaori Muraji does indeed do an excellent version. She is good at touching the soul. Unless I am mistaken, she chose the David Russell transcription for her recording. I love the playing of so many of these young guitarists from around the world, but if they are Apollo, Russell is Zeus.

  • Nobody is going to come close to this version. Don't be silly. This is David russel playing! Show some respect.

  • great version !but you should heard the best with Kaori Muraji

  • great version !but you should heard the best on Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring - Kaori Muraji

  • Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring - Kaori Muraji

  • perfect,

  • is there any way to find a transcription for this very arrangement on intenet?

    the best i heard btw

  • nice nice nice nice,,,,,,,bravvo

  • Sounds laboured and choppy .

  • @poupee58 that's because the nature of the instrument is that every note is articulated. playing something like this (actually anything) on guitar requires very high accuracy

  • Well done chap!

  • this is fucking hard to play

  • damn, i´d love to get my hands on that arrangement...

    very nice!

  • Really good performance

  • Perfection.

  • Youre my Guitar Hero!

  • The best arrangement of this work for guitar I've ever seen so far.

  • excellent

  • rich sound, absolute control, wise performance on a composition from outer space.

  • Thanks for the respons!Yes,i look upon musicians as doctors of the soul.

  • gipcarp you have to agree the tool is very importnat too in bringing out the beauty of it

  • toque magistral.. es un artista diferente..

  • Such a "tool" spends a large part of their life to deliver to believers like you this music.

This music was created by two people: the composer and the interpreter. It wouldn't exist without either.

  • It is the most wonderful thing i´ve heard, that simultaneus main melody with the discantus(the pianoversion has the bass notes, though)Has mr. Russel any note.book released?

  • what tuning is this song mine says dgdgbf wtf is this write ??? =)

  • DADGBE

  • nah, thats not write

  • Beautiful.

  • David Russell for my money is one of the best Classical guitarist that exists today. He is great at interpreting the soul of the music and adding his own flare. Parkening is at the top as well. His religious conversion only deepened the soul of his music.

  • May I ask what his conversion was to and what he was previous to the conversion?

  • Around 20 years ago Parkening became a born again Christian, he was previusly not religious at all. It is interesting that after his convertion he has become one of the most avid Bach enthusiasts, because he now feels that not only can he appreciate Bach's genius from the strictly musical sense, but can now in fact relate to the motivating force in Bach's own life:"...The glory of God".

  • This gives me feelings of absolute joy and bliss.

Genius performance of a genius composition!

    Thank you, Mr. Russell!!

  • Listen to Parkening´s version on YOUTUBE. The young Parkening was something beyond belief (even compared to today´s best players) in terms of tone, technique and interpretation. Something went wrong in his career...a religious conversion took place and he never played the same again. However, he certainly has his place alongside Russell and the other fine players cited herein.

  • i know exactly what you mean, it kind of made him brain dead when it comes to interpretation

  • Is this drop D tuning?

  • yes

  • it's called scordatura (see Wikipedia)

  • scordatura (literally Italian for "mistuning", doesnt necessary indicate whether its truly drop D. There could be many tunings used.

  • Yes indeed, but this is drop D. I have the sheet music for the arrangement and it's a drop D.

  • How can i get the sheet music for this?

  • @gipcarp i wonder the same. I have a copy but this looks like it could be a different arrangement than what i have, considering the tuning is different.

  • how come this arrangement is in g and rick fosters is in c, i will need to learn both now , bum

  • It's not important at all who is the best.

There are a lot of excelent guitar players, just like David Russell. I like him a lot, but also Eduardo Baranzano, Alvaro Pierri...

    And thats about classical music.

They certainly can't play some popular music as the original people, and im not talking just flamenco style, that its different in technics, but also south american folkore (folclore) or tango.

For that see Juan Falu, Juanjo Dominguez, Cacho Tirao...

  • Ive always noticed how he plays with the middle joint of his thumb... The "rules" say you should not do that.... But what matters is the music so in the end who cares!! But it is interesting to watch his right hand compared to other players

  • I've never noticed before, but Russell has a really long pinky finger.

  • Wow. Hope everyone can appreciate how difficult this arrangement is...he connects melodic lines so smoothly over a bitch of accompaniment. wow/

  • ya, exactly, alot harder than ripping scales

  • Right!

The hardest pieces are the slow ones, where lines must be connected and made musical. I'm sure this one ranks right up there as one of the most difficult and what we see in Russell's performance is just the tip of the iceberg - many many hours surely were dedicated at home!

  • anyone going to kings place this thursday to see him?

  • Great!!!Absolutely Fantastic.

David Russell is undoubtely one of the Great Masters of the Guitar!

  • man, paco is a good player , but we are talking about diferent kind of music!!!!!!

  • Paco is deffinetly a great flamenco-guitarist, he can switch from a difficult chord to another without one single dead note. But for classical he is, still great, but not the best. This David Russel was superb, but my vote goes to the young Andrés Segovia. And the big guitar-composers, Francessco Tárrega and Fernando Sor, is said to have been incredible. To bad there isn´t any recordings fron that time (around the

    18:th century.)

  • barrios mangore, best player and best composer there ever was

  • so beautiful!! Thanks!!!

  • excellent arrangement! The guitar sounds a bit dull but the tune fits very nicely for guitar.

  • Fantástico! Se não me engano o Alexandre Lagoya toca um arranjo semelhante onde na parte dos acordes a melodia continua também. Alguém por favor me arruma esse arranjo ou diz como conseguir!

  • very nice, where can i get this transcription?

  • This is fantastic, inspirational for myself and other learning guitarists. Thankyou

  • Awesome!!! My absolute favorite classical guitar recording is Russell's Bach CD...I love it!!!

  • Nobody has mentioned Parkenings version. It is a very rich and thourough arrangement. I think I like it a little better.

  • why can't we see more of your bach performances, this sounds lyrical and absolutely perfect..

  • Where can I find the music sheet for this piece? thanks!

  • All of David Russell's published arrangements can be purchased from Doberman*Yppan. Go to David Russell's website and, on the left side of the screen, click on "Editions". This should take you to Doberman*Yppan's site where you'll find David's arrangements. In fact, once there you'll find a choice at the top of the screen for the "David Russell Series". This piece is published together with Sleeper's Awake, and the edition is very nice, except that it's bound so that you have to turn pages.

  • Correction: Go to David Russell's website (the home page), and click on "Editions" on the left side of the screen. This will take you to another part of David Russell's site. On the left side of this new page you will find a link to Doberman*Yppan's site. There you will find Russell's many superb arrangements, including this one.

  • thanks, i've found it, I placed the order but unfortunately there was no reply...

  • As I recall, I had some trouble when I ordered also. It was a long time ago so I don't remember the specifics anymore, but I do remember placing the order and not being sure that it went through. So I contacted them and it was resolved.

  • Thank you. This is the best arrangement I have heard so far. It captures most of the voices and has beautiful harmonies.

  • Great stuff from David (and JSB)

  • Beautyful music and full control of the technical difficulties. He really uses the special guitar sound.

  • you are a fag

  • This guitar sounds so beautifully.

  • Suave, preciso, musical......gran técnica y mejor sonido;todo muy bien balanceado!!!Es una estupenda interpretación!!!

  • YES DROP D IS HOW IT IS MEANT TO BE PLAYED

  • THANKS FOR POSTING IN CAPS!! "Typical classical version"? As opposed to the actual fully realiZed Cantata? Anyway, there is nothing typical about his arrangement or performance. I've read through many arrangements for guitar for this, and Russells is by far the most technically difficult....though hearing him play it certainly doesn't sound like it!

  • he plays on drop D tuning?

  • TYPICAL CLASSICAL VERSION

  • I think that the only sense in which this arrangement can be called "typical" is in reference to the key it is in, for there are many others in the key of G, some with drop D tuning (e.g. Anton Stingl), some with standard tuning (e.g. David Dolata). Beyond that, this piece is *far* from typical! It is a masterpiece, not only for its richness (each triplet has 5 or 6 notes, on average), but for the fact that he manages to weave in the second melody without breaking the flow of triplets!

  • I agree.

  • That's astonishing how he manages to sustain the different melody lines coherent and distinct from each other.

  • Lipati on piano is brill, but this is as close as it get on guitar, nice job Dave!

  • I can play a version of this tune but no where near as good as david russell,if any one thinks its ok I would love a rating , thanks ,mikegroocockguitar.

  • Good, but I much prefer Leo Kottke's version. Hopefully someone will stick that on You Tube

  • Effortless! You see/hear something played like this and you want to kick your own ass for not being able to play it nearly as nicely.

  • This man should be knighted by the queen. He deserves more recognition. Can anyone lead me to find classical music in guitar tabliture?

  • More recognition? David Russell is known as one of the world's top classical guitarists.

  • but why everyone put him under John Williams

  • 'cause John William's technique is exceptional.

  • Because John Williams Is The Guitar.

  • awesome!

  • Superb! Both, music and guitar player.

  • I used to (and still really do) worship Rick Foster's version but this is a very close second

  • hermosoooooooooo grande bach

  • Lol Didn't realize it was david russell

  • is it me or you play this tune with your Low E string tuned down to D? most versions i've seen of this were in standart tuning. Nice job though, i must say.

  • very very good. i like bach

  • Beautiful....Beautiful.....You have god hand

  • Awesome!

  • Very nicely played.
