@snarfeater Torque is power from the engines, but not at the wheels. Even 500lb/ft isn't enough to get a car moving very quickly which is why all cars have gears. The quicker the engine is reving the more it can be geared and the more torque ends up in the tires.
More torque is more hp at low revs which is good for normal driving (noise, economy...), but doesn't do much for speed.
Because it is light it accelerates quickly, but at high speed aerodynamics take over, that's the illusion.

@KJaySloan Well I find that 4 cylinders have plenty of torque. For instance they put a 2.2 liter 4 cyl in the Saturn Vue, and that SUV like vehicle will drive around 5 heavy people with the back full of stuff without a problem, and when that vehicle is empty it does move with speed.
@stevenmorookian16 It really depends no the four cylinder engine you're referring it. that 2.2L in the vue is designed for that car so it needs torque. The engines in S2Ks are designed more for the track which is why they have almost zero torque (something they tried to adress with the 2.2L engine) down low and all of their power up high, for the street this doesn't really make sense because you're not going to be driving around revving to 7K wherever you go. It's not the size, it's how u use it
I currently have an s2000 that I got when they first came out, with a little over 300,000 (yes, 300,000) miles on it. all the honda dealerships ive been to say it has more miles than any s2000 theyve ever seen. though this is not because they dont last, most people simply just dont drive them as much as i do. But to answer your question, if taken care of they can last a long, long time.
True Honda's are over engineered, a single cam can handle 300-400 hp on stock internals, pretty remarkable, and all it needs is oil change, and service every 50k miles or so, my friend has a crx with 380k, burns no oil, mechanically sound, and runs better the older it gets, its what they were designed to do, nothing compares in terms of reliability.
@dan8852 - highest hp/liter is wrong statement, The EJ20 Impreza 2.0 and 4G63 Evo 2.0 were pumping out 280, so 140hp/liter, by the time the AP1 S2000 was released, with 120hp/liter but, you'd be right to say highest hp/liter in a naturally aspirated car, definitely. Its a technical masterpiece ^.^
Also, fact, the McLaren F1 is still the fastest naturally aspirated production car, everyone else faster used forced induction.

If you change the timing belt every 40k or so, adjust the valves and keep the fluids good, a Honda will go over 500k or more easy.

@snarfeater Torque is power from the engines, but not at the wheels. Even 500lb/ft isn't enough to get a car moving very quickly which is why all cars have gears. The quicker the engine is reving the more it can be geared and the more torque ends up in the tires.
More torque is more hp at low revs which is good for normal driving (noise, economy...), but doesn't do much for speed.
Because it is light it accelerates quickly, but at high speed aerodynamics take over, that's the illusion.

I have never considered my car "fast" mainly due to the fact that where I live I see C6 Corvettes and C6 Z06's everywhere. not to mention the numerous E92 M3, E63/C63, etc. Even though I can smoke most of the cars I see normally, I still can't beat the cars I named. The engines in S2Ks are designed more for the track which is why they have almost zero torque (something they tried to adress with the 2.2L engine) down low and all of their power up high, for the street this doesn't really make sense because you're not going to be driving around revving to 7K wherever you go. It's not the size, it's how u use it

I currently have an s2000 that I got when they first came out, with a little over 300,000 (yes, 300,000) miles on it. all the honda dealerships ive been to say it has more miles than any s2000 theyve ever seen. though this is not because they dont last, most people simply just dont drive them as much as i do. But to answer your question, if taken care of they can last a long, long time.

True Honda's are over engineered, a single cam can handle 300-400 hp on stock internals, pretty remarkable, and all it needs is oil change, and service every 50k miles or so, my friend has a crx with 380k, burns no oil, mechanically sound, and runs better the older it gets, its what they were designed to do, nothing compares in terms of reliability.

@dan8852 - highest hp/liter is wrong statement, The EJ20 Impreza 2.0 and 4G63 Evo 2.0 were pumping out 280, so 140hp/liter, by the time the AP1 S2000 was released, with 120hp/liter but, you'd be right to say highest hp/liter in a naturally aspirated car, definitely. Its a technical masterpiece ^.^
Also, fact, the McLaren F1 is still the fastest naturally aspirated production car, everyone else faster used forced induction.
