I met Sensei Kanazawa late 1980's and can say he is one of the best and technically strong masters of his era. He graded me when I was a 7th Kyu. Nobody took their eyes of him when he demonstrated the Kata's.
@HOHORUS I'm not sure who did, but usually a Budo master of very high ranking, be it Aikido, Judo, Kendo, Kyudo, Naginata-Do, Karate-Do, etc. and himself or herself a recognized authority of the same organization OR an authorized member from the Dai NIppon Butokukai (google it) are the ones who give recognition to such rankings. Funakoshi himself had have the Shotokan recognized by the Dai Nippon Butokukai so as to authenticize his school as legitimate hall for Budo training in Japan.
@HOHORUS Also, I know you mean no disrespect, but its kind of unfair to compare Kanazawa to Osaka sensei. You have to understand, Kanazawa was more than a decade senior to Osaka when he was still in the JKA. Kanazawa's style is born from the original JKA early 50's to mid 60's flavor. By the 70's, Osaka's generation, JKA Karate had evolved based on experience of JKA instructors teaching a decade earlier. If you study Kagawa's (late 70's to mid 80's) style, it is a progression from Osaka's.
@HOHORUS The clearest distinction which accents the point I'm making can be seen when the kata performance of Funakoshi himself (tekki performance on you tube) is compared to Kanazawa's kata. In truth, to say which is "better" is always arguable because beauty always lies in the eyes of the beholder. However, the difference between the two is evidence of the "progression" I'm talking about. Another example: current boom in MMA has Shotokan dojos rethinking kata practice.
This rendition of Tekki Shodan is quite old and sensei Kanazawa was a lower grade at the time (4th or 5th Dan I think). The fact that you did not consider the time factor of this recording, renders your statement fallacious.
it is derived from naihanchi of okinawan karate and was the basis of wado, shotokan and shitoryu versions. it has been called tekki because gichin funakoshi of shotokan had to rename it as to give a more japanese flavor.
Kanazawa Sensei has the most deceptively powerful techniques of any of the Japanese instructors with whom I have trained (14.) I observed him put his fist through a chunk of wooden beam and also shatter a makiwara; yet his movements are smooth & economical. Also, his mind is quick and strategic rather than simply aggresive. More imortantly, his character & behavior are superior to many, including some who post here.
When you know what you're talking about, then you may question me! There is no proof other what Kanazawa says! Kanazawa broke from the JKA as many of the first generation who trained under Nakayama did. If you know anything, you'd know that there are numerous Shotokan schools in Japan that claim to be Funakoshi't successor. That's why they say that they're the legitimate successor to Funakoshi. Egami's Shotokan's punch is totally different from JKA and it's offshoots. So who changed it? Get real
Kanazawa did NOT train under Funakoshi! Where are the photos of him with Funakoshi? What exactly is the proof? Master Egami trained under Funkoshi's son, as most of the JKA did! Funakoshi would not "teach" them, but would come in and observe the class and how the instructor was teaching. By the time Kanazawa was training, Funakoshi was in his eighties. This myth has been propagated by the JKA to make themselves seem more "legitimate" than the other Shotokan associations. How can these people lie
Royajin, Kanazawa Sensei was NEVER a direct pupil of Funakoshi, but trained under Nakayama Sensei.Nishiyama and Okazaki were his seniors, but both of them still recognized Nakayama as Funakoshi's successor as the Head of Shotokan (JKA) Unfortuanately, many of great JKA instructors (including Kanazawa) started their own organizations. But the good thing is that all of them (except Shotokai) are preserving the true spirit of Shotokan.
Chosen for what??? That's a LIE!! Funakoshi chose and installed Nakayama as the head of Shotokan. There is NO evidence whatsoever (except in the propaganda of Shotokai practitioners) that Egami had any special status with Funakoshi. And besides, Egami astrayed so far from Funakoshi's teachings that Shotokai has no connection whatsoever with Shotokan nor with what Funakoshi was trying to accomplish.
ok maybe funakoshi didn't choose egami, but he also didnt choose nakayama, because nakayama didnt follow the philosophy of funakoshi, for example funakoshi said that there is no competition in karate and karate cannot be a sport
@PanicusVulgaris I have to disagree with you on some points, Panicus. Before I go on, I'd like to point out that my source of info is Harry Cook's "Shotokan Karate: A Precise History", and "Kanazawa, 10th Dan: Recollections of a Living Karate Legend - The Early Years (1931-1964)". Funakoshi never named Nakayama as head of the Shotokan. JKA was never the original dojo. Isao Obata was Nakayama's Senior and JKA co-founder but left because of early politics and JKA attitude on tournaments.
@PanicusVulgaris JKA started in 1949, with Funakoshi as head. However, the original dojo was already established by then. Funakoshi had into'd Karate to mainland Japan in 1922, but had to share teaching space with a famous Kenjitsu instructor (Hiromichi Nakayama). His students decided to chip in for a formal dojo, hence the Shoto-Kan was built in 1936. Shigeru Egami started training in Karate in Waseda University in 1932. Nakayama started training in Takushoku University in the same year.
@PanicusVulgaris After Funakoshi died, the Shotokan splintered into many groups, with University dojos siding either with the JKA or the original Shotokan dojo (Shoto-kai). Egami, head of the Shotokai started to distort Funakoshi's teachings a few years later (1960's).
@PanicusVulgaris Kanazawa split off the JKA and formed SKIF in 1978, almost a decade before Nkayama passed away in 1987. According to Kanazawa, he did not want to split off. In his book, he said he wanted to simply resign his post as head of JKA in Europe and concentrate on teaching at a smaller scale. He was shocked to find a letter from Nakayama demanding his total resignation from the JKA. But then with my experience with the JKA and non-JKA dojos, Karate politics is always about control.
@Bassai, looks to me that your info is reliable and precise, thank you for the info and my apology for wrong post. I believed that Kanazawa Sensei was one of a few who split after Nakayama's death. About Egami I never cared very much, for a simple reason - in my humble opinion the Shotokai as it is today (which means Shotokai as Egami created it) is far, far away from Funakoshi's teachings. As for Kanazawa, I admire his skills and his character, no matter what organization he belongs to.
@PanicusVulgaris You are right about Shotokai. Some will blast e about my opinion, but I think that its a true distortion of what Funakoshi's (Gichin and Gigo's) Karate. I heard from another Japanese teacher (non-JKA) in NY that in the 60's Egami grew ill and was hospitalized. When he returned to the dojo he wass a changed man and he implemented more esoteric ideas to Karate (involving fluid ki) into the Kihon and Kata.
franvanqueens, Kanazawa sensei NEVER stated that he trained under Funakoshi! Some ill informed fans of him might have stated so, but he can not be responsible for other people's statements. He trained mostly under late Nakayama Masatoshi Sensei, whom Funakoshi installed as his successor. It wasn't until 1987, when Nakayama Sensei passed away, that Kanazawa started his own association. In no way is he stating that his Shotokan is THE Shotokan.Rather, he teaches his own undertanding of Shotokan.
Whilst the practioner looks good to the untrained eye, there are a number of changes to this kata that are incorrect. Unfortunately the improperly trained don't see them, but see only what they think is correct due to his stature in the karate world. One must learn to look beyond hype and p.r. blurbs to get to the real excecution. Kanazawa has made a huge following, but that has nothing to do with correct excecution of techniques.
Normally there isn't, but Kanazawa is not normal: he's a legend! He's the only 10th Dan, after Nakayama. He trained from Funakoshi, the Shotokan founder! - If you watch his kata execution, you can just imagine why he is a reference for the whole World... Thanks Sensei - OSS
actually he isnt but he calls him self one because he is at the level him and sensi hazard traned together and they told me that the reason why they dont grade for there tenth dan is cuz they want one of there peers to do it first thats what him and sensi hazard told me and yes ive metHirokazu Kanazawa
I'm just sitting here thinking about how lucky we all are to have this here on you tube. This really is the "good stuff." This is how all us Shotokan karateka learn. Don't get sucked into the MMA, boxing, or kickboxing hype. Us Shotokan guys don't believe in fighting, but really do train for it. Don't conform. Keep perfecting what you know. Thank you Master Kanazawa. We appreciate what you do, and hope to do the ass kicking rather than get our asses kicked. os. Dai kyu soku Kai. Kia!!!
Rei. Good luck. Just give him what he wants. He must feel that you are ready. Remember Dojo Kun #3, "endeavor." Easy for me to say...LOL You are so lucky to train under him. He is a true master. I watch his katas over and over again. I wish I could do katas like that. Maybe one day... I've only been training in shotokan for six years, so I'm still a beginer, maybe intermediate... Again... Good luck. Either way you are still so ahaead of the game by training under Master Kanazawa. Rei.
This IS shotokan. Not flashy, but powerful. When the foot lands, the hand lands. The idea is to develop muscle memory, so that every technique lands with power. 1. Where are the proofs that Kanazawa did not train under Funakoshi?
2. And why should that be a myth by the JKA, Kanazawa is (today) in the SKIF.
3. Funakoshi's son died 1945, Kanazawa is born in 1931 and he started to train Karate at university. So he could not train under Funakoshi's son.
4. Everyone says that Kanazawa trained under Nishyama, Nakayama and was one of the last students of Funakoshi. Why should that be a lie?
