yes there are some wonderful players out there but this is the guvner toots.he impressed charlie parker way back at the start and has knocked everybody out since.ask quincey. his command of his instrument is awesome.he is responsible for bringing this little harp alongside the tenor...trumpet...trombone...etc...as a major frontline horn.toots is tops.many thanks.
to answer risque, one of the very finest harmonica players in the world is a woman who presently lives in Sydney Australia. She is French. Her name is Christelle Berthon. check her out on youtube. Her version of Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder is absolutely top shelf complexity and difficulty. she's up there with Dennis Greunling and Jason Ricci as skilled harp players. dont miss her stuff.
Toots' playing on Rogier van Otterloo's "Dat Mistige Rooie Beest" from the "Turks Fruit" soundtrack is the most haunting beautiful chrom harp sound ever.
Just Think About It! The harmonica can play any piece written for music that any other instrument can play; however, the harmonica can play musical sounds that no other instrument can play. So small and simple; but so complex in musical reality.
strange... Toots has been asked by some the best musicians in the world, and by some of the greatest moviemakers as well, to play with them or for them on that piece of shit harmonica; And maybe you're right about the instrument, but doesn't it make Toots even greater, to think that he can make such great sounds come out of that little piece of metal?!
... played with: Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespîe, Stanley Clark, Billie Joel, Zucchero, Nick Cave, Charlie Parker, Peggy Lee, Miles Davis, Paul Simon, Dinah Washington, Benny Goodman, Oscar Peterson, Shirley Horn... and so many more; are you saying all those people were wrong and you are right, Rainbowaffles??
Yeah,, it's heavy and full of complex touches, and the harmonics on the third octave are difficult to come by. But I'm looking forward to buying one for when i travel without my saxophone ;-)
@TonyOnTheRise I disagree; I play the harmonica (both diatonic as chromatic), I also play guitar, a bit of piano... there are other instruments, like violin or harp, those are harder.
@surrealIdeal I guess we can say any instrument can be difficult. Some people have an affinity for a certain instrument over others. I play harmonica, guitar, a little piano and some pan flute. I picked up the guitar pretty quickly, and found the harmonica tougher to learn and teach, because you can't see whats happening inside the mouth also the note arrangement is so weird and limited. With practice and dedication we all eventually get pretty good. The piano is hard I must say.
Far. What an imbecile. What is a good instrument? Double kick on drums? Yeah lets learn to do that bullshit when half the people can't use a single one properly. The harmonica is a fucking tops instrument.
I heard one of his recordings on the radio when I was 14, totally blew my mind. Luckily, I was living in NYC at the time (they have one of the best library system in the nation), so that same day I eagerly went to the library to get more of his music.............. been a fan ever since.
Thank you so much for your amazing blues chromatic harmonicaplaying, I am a big fan of you! You play the blues just fantastic, my compliments for the other musicians too ofcourse, we wish you a lot of succes with all your performances in the future.
I play the chromatic myself, please visit our channel chrismayka on YouTube, thanks in advance.
We wish you a blessed and beautiful upcoming Easter weekend.
Dearest greetings Chris - The Netherlands - YouTube chrismayka.
A+....u should hear the sophisticated lady CD, with Shirley horn singing...dude does these quick mind blow'n runs....& plays in & out of some serious chord changes!
I know one on diatonic harmonica who play very well and has a youtube account, search on google for harpqueen she's called christelle something. But generally speaking look at the great instrument players, how many are women??? I can think of many as wonderful female singers, but the great musicians of history are not women!
@alliax oh really? Perhaps that's because 'historically' men thought women as no more 'worth' than their shoes ...just as some men in certain countries today still consider and treat women as chattel: too busy bearing children and scrubbing floors to 'indulge' in the pastime of composing music or playing instruments. Hermine Deurloo and Michal Adler (just to name two) can outplay most men (including you) on their chromatic harmonicas. Forget history, nowadays women are brilliant musicians!
@risqueclay what a question. :) Why not? I'm a woman and I've played harmonica since I was 4. I gave it up for a long time ..played piano instead - and now have come back to it..chromatic harmonica. I'm no pro, but there are brilliant women professional harmonica players both chromatic and diatonic out there. Michal Adler of Israel, the aforementioned Hermine Deurloo, too many others to name - do a google search, you'll find them. In China, harmonica is taught in school, both to girls and boys.
@ElizabethGS I meant no disrespect by my question. I've been playing around with a harmonica and I think it is such a great (and very portable) instrument. It would be an excellent instrument to be taught in schools. I will google this and thank you for your response.
@risqueclay Thanks for a nice response. You originally meant why were there not women players? ;) There really was a 'gender gap'...the harmonica being considered a boy's instrument - and girls and women not steered to it unless they had a family member who encouraged them to play. A few took it up on their own. Men traditionally look on the Blues diatonic world as their own very 'masculine' territory, although many women today have made themselves known: Annie Raines, Cheryl Arena, etc.
Of course there is. Christelle Berthon! christellester. I love her musik as well, but this here is another kind. She plays diatonic 10holes Harp, not chromatic like him, and she plays differend styles very well. I love this Instrument!
