  • i remember the Jesus movement back then

  • I can't tell you how many times I've seen this film. The first time I saw it in the theatre in '73. I'm not terribly religious - don't let the religious theme prevent you from watching it - it's a great movie with an AMAZING soundtrack.

  • 2:59 to 3:04 is a great use of foreshadowing

  • Woooow isn`t he a handsome, gorgeus jesus!!! The most handsome Jesus i`ve ever seen!!!!!

  • WEABOO BULLSHIT

  • Such a great screenplay - so creatively written.

  • absolute genius. the film itself is brilliantly directed, every moment exudes cool. without the music though it would be nothing. I don't know much about Weber, I do not enjoy musicals in general - - this music is just phenomenal. It's relentless.

  • 4:21-4:41=Epic

You rock, Ted Neeley!!!!! Best Jesus ever (after the real one, of course :))

  • @TheaterRaven There was never a real one.

  • @phallictractor Um, yes, there was. Regardless of people's religious beliefs, or lack thereof, Jesus of Nazareth did in fact historically exist.

  • @TheaterRaven actually that is incorrect, show me one contemporary of that time period speaking about jesus, there was a forged writing that people claimed was joseephus, all others were atleast 60 or more years later.

  • @phallictractor I can't remember where I read it, but there was a document written by a Roman official (again, this was looking back years after it happened) where Jesus' crucifixion, as a historical event, is briefly mentioned.

Regardless of our differing views, let's just agree that we both came here because we enjoy this musical. :) Good day to you.

  • @TheaterRaven You're right about the historical mention of Jesus. And it makes sense that so little survives. The Romans would have considered him a nuisance at the time but not someone to write about.

  • @TheaterRaven Plus Jesus' people would have been used to passing down stories orally. It was only later that things about him were written down.

  • @phallictractor Whether he was a real person or not, it's the teachings associated with him that are truly important.

  • This will be back on broadway in march 2012.

  • I remember hearing this song for the first time on cassette when I was 7 or 8 and didn't know what to think; is this song freaky or cool? I still get a weird feeling from this song but I love it. There isn't a single song in this musical I don't like and I'm not religous in any way.

  • @MichaelMorbius4ever thats just the thing...you don't have to be religious to appreciate the music!

  • came for the songg

  • @grandsaga No that's the 2000 version.

You think they could of found people that could actually fucking sing!

  • I agree with you man. I share this account...

  • A great film

  • Why does Pilate always look like he's played by a gay dude?

  • @Behaviordoc2 I know, in every rendition I've seen he's always effeminate. I think maybe the actually historical person probably was. The only exception was Mel Gibson's "Passion of the Christ"

  • I have the vinyl album of the original.

  • Man didn't invent machine guns until the 1860s. The Romans couldn't have them in Jesus' time.

  • @JGCooney This was originally a musical, which meant that when they put on a show, they use whatever was on hand to put on the sets. That meant that if they had machine gun props, or 70's clothes, they'd use them.

  • @killerpacdot You do know this isn't a student film made in someone's basement, right? The fact that it is a musical doesn't mean it didn't have a budget or a director and crew of designers working for a specific look. They didn't use machine guns because they were 'on hand,' they used them to create a very specific and menacing look for the Romans, however anachronistic. It isn't meant to be historically accurate or taken literally, it is visual symbolism.

  • @raukoiel Touché, salesman, touché.

  • @JGCooney There are also planes and tanks in the movie. And scaffolding. And look at all the costumes. It's all very stylized. :)

  • Hair, Godspell, JC Superstar & Tommy. The great era of the rock operas - what a trip they were. I hope that those under 30 can appreciate these for what they were. I knew one of the actors on this film & it was a rough shooting. Most scenes had to be done in the early AM as the heat reached 100 deg plus in no time & several dancers collapsed from heat exhaustion throughout the shoot. Of course, it was all worth it, as the film shows.

  • @forestkaat i have heard of Hair, Godspell, and JC Superstar, but what is Tommy? Is there some videos from it on You Tube?

  • @JGCooney The Who's Tommy. There are videos on Youtube for sure. Its great.

  • I love how 70's this is..... It's awesome

  • MADISON SCOUTS!!!!!

  • What wonderful visuals from director Robert Stigwood, often looked down upon because of the superficiality of the movie behind the imagergy. JCS continues to be condemned as anti-semetic (the black hats of the priests?) Funny thing, he brought Fidler on the Roff on-screen two years earlier. This movie's imagery takes you back to 1973, even though it is (at times) a period piece.

  • A 70's musical masterpiece...

  • This is the Real One

  • I'm not very religious but this movie is just so amazing and it can be entertaining and educational even if you aren't very religious.

  • this movie confuses me are the people on the bus reliving the last few days of christ?

  • The beginning is a very delicate time...

  • Was in this production and performed it during Holy Week in a church. This music still gets stuck in my head all the time. :D

  • anybody know if this out on a video?

  • The Overture is, in my opinion, the best recording on the movie soundtack. The rest of the songs sound as if they were recorded with vocal and music out of sync.

  • is a beutiful song

  • strong and rytmic very good i like very much play wiyh guitar

  • WOW, had not seen this in a very long time. Thanks for postin it. I need to watch the whole thing

  • Thanks again Rick for posting this great intro to JCS. Miss you Ric. What are you doing these days? Email me sometime- God Bless - Stargazer/Sharonlee

  • Thanks again Rick for posting this great intro to JCS. Miss you Ric. What are you doing these days? Email me sometime- God Bless - Stargazer/Sharonlee

  • There is something so organic, so incredibly creative about this film- it just leaves me speechless.

  • Best screen adaptation of the musical. No question about it.

  • I didn't used to like this.... but now it's kinda catchy!! x

  • :) this is well good!

  • @andrew34430 I heard there's supposed to be a remake.

  • 2:49-2:54

    THAT'S MAH PILATE!!!!!! :D

Sorry, had to, that moment was so epic

  • @Sandra3594 What Do You mean By THAt, ha, THAT is Not An ANNNNSWEEER! Your DEEP in Trouble Friend... ....LOL

  • @AbdullahIbnBilal1 lol, I LOVE how he sings that :D

  • The most erroneous retelling I have ever come across

Why would Judas dislike this video? The entire movie praises him

  • The most erroneous retelling I have ever come across

  • the spirit of Judas apparently is the one who disliked this video

  • @hamdinger125 I think that's because the music was made way before the film, so the directors couldn't ask for specific music. They had to fit it as best they could with the music they had. Though I agree it doesn't fit very well, but the score is incredible :)

  • Anyone who dislikes this FAILS.

  • this my gentlemans, its pure quality.

  • this my gentlemans, its pure quality.

  • I love this overture- really really love it. However, the lighthearted action of the cast setting up for the film doesn't really match the very dramatic and foreboding tone of the music. At least not until towards the very end.

  • Best part is at 4:43 - 4:50 , 4:54- 5:02

The echoing of the voices is so sad and it always just makes me a little sad the way it gets quiet and the voices sing that slowly..its just sad in my opinion

  • Thanks!

  • i watched this after i watched all of marilyn manson's anti christsuper star cuz i didnt get his music but these are so cool (and im jewish)

  • Zero dislikes! Holy...um...cow! That proves it: 1973 rules and 2000 drools...'nuff said. ;)

  • I really love this film...Carl Anderson and Ted Neely are awesome :D

  • that area...is that where the Real story actually took place? if so then.....damn

  • the first time i watched the movie i thought: WTF? did they had a bus in the period that jesus lived?

  • @muzieksamurai

It's supposed to be a movie within a movie. This part shows the crew and cast getting ready to film, and the ending shows the crew and cast leaving

  • @muzieksamurai They also had Tanks and Jets =D

  • about 37 years ago this movie was actually one of the sparks in the sea of darkness which was my life (and my siblings life) from aug 73 thru sept 75. it was and has been a help for me.

    John B.

  • A TRULY GREAT FILM??????????? PLEASE TELL ME YOUR JOKING!!!!

THE 1973 FILM WAS A DISASTER!!!! THE 2000 FILM WAS A THOUSAND TIMES BETTER.

  • @helives1954 o_o please tell me YOUR jokeing...

  • @toamatoro614 NO I AM NOT AND TO BE TRUTHFUL ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER DIDN'T LIKE IT EITHER. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT, THAT IS THE REASON HE DIDN'T ALLOW ANY MORE OF HIS MUSICAL TO BE TURNED INTO FILMS . UNTIL "JOSEPH'S AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAM COAT" AND LATER "SUPERSTAR" , "EVITA" AND "PHANTOM" BUT AS I SAID BEFORE EVERY ONE IS ENTITLED TO AN OPINION. I SHALL RESPECT YOURS EVEN THOU I DISAGREE

HAVE A GREAT EASTER!!! AND GOD BLESS

  • @helives1954 Well i respect your opinion i just dont see how the other is better...i mean....its just....well....weird.

  • That they are in character the minute they exit the bus is the best use of identification I have ever seen. They in fact took a legend and made it both relatable in any time frame but they also made the human relationships tower beyond play acting.

  • I love sitting at bus stops with my friend;

Me: I wonder where the bus is...

    Friend: Idk

    *Bus shows up*

    Friend: oh there it is

Me: TED NEELY TED NEELY CARL ANDERSON!!!! WAVE TO ME.

    Friend: its a school bus...

  • @ 4:27 That would be a great ring tone. Does anyone know if they have that as a ring tone? Because that would be EPIC!

  • It moves me. Always.

  • I love this musical. It.s clasiic :))

    Love, Peace and... Jesus :D

  • The guitar at the beginning sounds a LOT like Ritchie Blackmore..It's even said to be that Deep Purple played a bit in the intro.

  • @fodnis3 I saw Deep Purple on the House of Blue Light tour back in the 80's around Easter and I think in the middle of Strange Kind of Woman, Ian Gillian started to sing a bit of Superstar and the whole band went right into the song, pretty awesome to see him do the song he did on the original (non-broadway cast) album with DP backing him!

  • @jennifersman He didn't sing Superstar...

  • @theanimal6592 what I meant was, Ian Gillian was in the first recorded version of this musical when it was done just as an album it hadn't become a play yet. He was closely assocaited with it for a time and in the 80's he sang a bit of this song in while he was with Deep Purple. OK, wasn't neccesarily the song his character did but it was cool nonetheless

  • 2:42 allright cowboy! Yiiiihaaaaaaah

  • 2:53 - Pontius Pilatus at 12 o'clock!

  • Caiaphas and Annas are, after Jesus and Judas, the best characters :D

  • A truly great film, way before its time I am going to Amazon to get a copy too

  • A truly great film, way before its time

  • But this movie doesn't bing miracles and no resurrection but a puppet depiction of the last days of Christ on earth. Just like an animated cartoon character series such as Beanie & Cecil. This movie influenced by Bumday Monday of January 1973 that started two years earlier from February, March and November in 1971. This movie is inconclusive about the life of Jesus not showing miracle events but a "show-off" puppet full of lies as an alternative to the actual four gospels.

  • @romanlove56 what the hell is wrong with you? seriously!

  • @romanlove56 Sounds like you're missing the point. The message this story is giving isn't anti-christian at all. It's pointing up issues in the New Testament that normally are looked over.- such as the apparent romanticizing of Jesus as a divine figure by his disciples. Jesus is portrayed as a very wise and kind prophet of God, but rather than deify him, this musical (with fantastic performances) looks at his more human side. If you want something else, go watch King of Kings or the Passion.

  • @KingPiccoloDaimao I heard they even wrote a book! ;)

  • @romanlove56 Wrong. I posted this to Krilehor22 as well: "The Temple and Lepers?" Healing. Praying to God in the Garden, and God showing him his death on the cross? Supernatural. Foretelling Peter's denial and Judas' betrayal? Not just a man.

I agree they wanted to show the more human side to Jesus, but they still kept Jesus in his proper place as the son of God.

  • Actually while the events were portrayed we never observed mystical interference or magical properties ourselves. The predictions, the foreshadowing with humanist portraits, all remained largely within the role of a human perspective. They isolated these events to him and did not overlay voices or supernatural visions for this reason. While clearly there are particular moments of clairvoyance they are not made concrete by the film, it is all inclusive in being both theological and secular

  • @tiemedown Disagree: when it comes to your argument, are you suggesting that it is within a normal human's ability to predict a specific person (Peter) to deny knowing Jesus three times? Pilate's dream was a moment of clairvoyance that was made concrete by the film - why else would they include it in the film? And that's the overall question when dealing with the belief that JC Superstar is a "secular" portrayal: why include anything supernatural if the goal is to deny the supernatural?

  • My point is that the supernatural is kept from the rest of the cast at large. While there are clearly moments of clairvoyance, they were not driven by a deity or personality. My argument is that all supernatural events are filtered through human perceptions of dreams and images. The film was directed by an atheist who wanted to allude to spirituality without infusing manifested physical changes ie miracles. In this way with relationships taking center stage it can be considered humanist

  • 1973's "BRING AROUND THE ROSIE" Movie of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

during overture the crew arrives in a bus, others arrives with a truck loads of tent and equipments to erect a set location, use elephants to put up a tent, get the switch to turn on, they dress in their charactors, make-ups, dancing for the show, Neeley is to put on a white robe he is about to wear and wig his hair as he bearded up as he rose up and lifted up his hand as the show is about to begin.

  • After watching your uploads all the way through for the second time, I went over to Amazon and got the DVD. My old tape cassette of JCS is buried away in a box somewhere, and I want this to be a current part of my life again, as it is a more vibrant and soulful reinforcement of my faith than anything I have encountered in a long time.

  • @Vesnicie

    Nice sentimenand TY☺

    ♫Ric♫

  • @Vesnicie

Have u realized that this musical is the most ateist adaptation of the whole Jesus-story?

  • @Krilehor22 No, I hadn't "realized"--mostly because I disagree with your assessment. Faith is not always straightforward and it certainly isn't lacking in nuance and uncertainty. Aren't uncertainty and doubt, as embodied here in the character of Judas, what we all struggle with in our attempts to reach out to the Divine? It is quite possible to be both faithful and discerning, a point which is brought out beautifully in this musical.

  • @Vesnicie Have you noticed then there is no "miracle", "healing" or things like that in the movie?

This is all about how it _really_ happened, without god, without anyhing above normal. Just a really grasping man with a really lieable and followable philoshopy. I like the film really much, apart from the fact that im an ateist, cause it shows the things in a way that even i can beleive it happened in reality. Without this "supernatural" religious stuff.

  • @Krilehor22 whether you are religious, spiritual, atheist, it doesn't matter....everyone can appreciate Jesus Christ Superstar!...if nothing, for the music itself!

  • @Krilehor22 "The Temple and Lepers?" Healing. Praying to God in the Garden, and God showing him his death on the cross? Supernatural. Foretelling Peter's denial and Judas' betrayal? Not just a man.

I agree they wanted to show the more human side to Jesus, but they still kept Jesus in his proper place as the son of God.

  • @Vesnicie I agree...its the most humanistic portrayal of the story of Jesus.

  • @Vesnicie Let this reinforce our faith that kindness for the sake of kindness is all that matters - not because of some hope for supernatural reward.

  • @Vesnicie Amen to that, brother

  • @Vesnicie

I have the same feeling. Hope future generation won't forget what we believe and fight for.

  • @Vesnicie Well said - this rock opera was a ground-breaker in its own time. Its informal message may have seemed entertaining and simple, but then, it also proved for some (I for one) an extremely powerful eye-opener to anyone listening to the actuality of its lyrics - stimulating something of a soul-searching experience.

  • This is one of my favorite movie intros of all time. It doesn't get better than when Heaven on Their Minds riff starts up and they pan down on them taking the Cross off the bus. Man, awesome.

Going to see this on stage in MN in a month, can't wait!

  • Not a single dislike.

  • After going through the entire show and rewatching this opening, I realized the entire show only uses about 6-7 different melodies to form its songs. Even so, the songs are all very memorable and unique. Just a little something that I found awesome :)

  • that riff at 3:01 cannot not be fked with.

  • Best version on YouTube! Thank you very much!

  • Es mi opera rock favorita.

  • Do you have Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Donny Osmond?

  • Masterpiece.

  • Listen to that bass and guitar at 3:04. Straight up awesome, 70's and full of soul/groove. I love it!!

  • @poohdami YES! My favorite part of the Overture, so cool and powerful at the same time when you add in the orchestra

  • i love this intro, its soo deep.

  • This is so great, it just makes you forget about that OTHER play webber made....

    Ugh....Cats.........

  • @DaKilla27 tell me about it...I don't understand the obsession with Cats....I think its absolutely dreadful in comparison! Not even in the same league, yet its so popular! :S

  • Such a funky intro.

  • JCS has got to be one of the most AMAZING rock performances ever put down on paper...hands down!

  • What absolute perfection! When you get it right, you know it, and this particular version of the musical is beyond amazing. It came out way before I was born (like 11 years before)...but I've loved it every since I was a small kid. The hippie culture infused rock opera by the genius which is Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, is definitely a classic. I love the part when the cross is raised and the orchestra goes crazy! One of my fav ALW musicals of all time!

  • That's the Art

  • Kudos for uploading the best versions of these songs.lol.

All the other JCS videos on youtube are pretty low quality.

  • Thanks so much Allykins☺

    ♫Ric♫

  • @RlCBNH No no no. Thank you :)

It's nice being able to listen to the songs and watch the ideos without having to drag out the dvd.lol. And you allow me to do that :)

  • I have to admit that the idea of showing the actors getting ready definitely works.

  • @boomshanka it certainly does...very effective!

  • @ted

    >just put on a robe...

  • you can only make the origianal and only the one that stands out the best and that is this one

  • the overture sounds like if its a different mix or take compare to the original soundtrack album

  • Bought the album on LP nice to have, but it's not the same.

  • pontius pilate is such a queen. :D

  • @Spazzbert

This probably is one of the reasons why he is my FAVOURITE

  • @Spazzbert no, you are thinking of herod.

  • @AntaresInScorpius

No I'm not. But Herod's pretty fabulous too.

  • The 2000 version was garbage.

  • Incredible Overture!

Incredible Musical - one of the very best in my opinion. Many outstanding and emotionally charged tracks in a classic sountrack.

    Great movie! :)

  • @raveninsg I agree.................

  • Can you imagine if they re-made this movie today????? Somebody has to do it. It'd have like rap and Lady Gaga in it. I can see Coolio in it.

  • first time seeing the movie's version of overture...i saw the play in 2008 and the overture had some guy get killed @ the beginning then Jesus resurected him...why did they start the movie up like this though? is it just to show the cast setting up and prepping for the movie and who is who? and some are in cloaks from Jesus' time but why are some in modern clothes? jw...I do love the movie and play and the cast <3

  • @hatsunemiku444 This is actually the openning scene in the movie, kid. It shows the actors as they prepare for their roles. One of the coolest opennings in movie history. Artists iin the 60s and 70s were probably the most imaginative in their field. While today's crop are just "copy-pasted" from earlier times. Just try and watch JCS that was re-made in 2000 i think. Man, that really stunk!

  • Who was that woman who kissed Annas at 2:40-2:42?

  • This movie IS my childhood... not kidding. My friends and I would reenact several scenes of this movie, and it was a blast. The music is absolutely amazing... I'm thinking about having our band play part of this song at our next show (where the guitar kicks in at 3:03).

  • Hi Ric--Sorry if this has been asked before, but do you plan to reupload the 2000 videos as well?

Thanks for these again, too, by the way!

  • @siseo05

I am checking on the copyright issue. The 2000 version is owned by the Really Useful Group (RUG) and they appear to be very protective of that version.

    Stay tuned.

    ♫Ric♫

  • @RlCBNH god knows why they would! that version is quite frankly BULLSHIT! the original shits all over it!

  • @siseo05 This one is way better aqnyway ;-)

  • @Gsuswalks True, but I have this one on DVD, and I'd never seen the 2000 version before.

  • From all the JCS this is still the best opening.

  • Finally, I've been looking all over for good versions of these vids.
