There are some incredibly immature people on this planet!!! You take images of an stunningly beautiful planet and you make crass comments about gender or turn it into a stab at religion. It has nothing to do with either of these things. Grrr.
@firewallx totally. everyone talks about transforming mars one day. but you have it right; mars has very weak (or no) magnetic field. so how in the hell do you expect protection from dangerous radiation from outer space?
Contrary to popular belief its our atmosphere that sheilds us from cosmic rays not the magnetic field (which only really sheilds things about the equator). As for solar radiation -- well it is alot further from the sun so there should be a corresponding decrease in that too. So once Mars has an atmosphere things should be good (obviously atmosphere AND magnetic field would be better but a thick enough atmosphere alone is workable).
thank you. you mentioned solar radiation; what about solar flares? pardon my ignorance on the matter but wouldn't a sufficiently strong and 'well-timed' (for the lack of a better word) solar flare not be able to reach mars and cause damage? i'm guessing the topic of transforming mars wouldn't be talked about as much as it is if scientist didn't think it was possible in the future. i'm just curious on the matter.
It would take around 300 days to get to Mars. You need a lot of supplies etc. Then enough fuel to launch back if you wanted the astronauts back. So a round trip is looking to be almost 2 years in travelling.
yes .. but a well timed solar flare would also cause chaos on earth (so far we have been relatively lucky). I think the point is in terms of solar radiation the extra distance mitigates the lack of magnetic field. In terms of cosmic rays the atmosphere is the big blocker anyways. - also we are talking waaaay distant future; by then we should be alot better at predicting these things (we are talking many hundred years to thicken up the atmosphere to protect from cosmic rays)
very true. solar flares have caused extensive damage in terms of electrical grids and communication. yeah, im guessing all those things will be taken into consideration and like you said, it will be waaaay in the distant future. it certainly is a very exciting prospect. what i wouldn't give to live in those times. hopefully by then, though, we will have learned to live in harmony with the planet as to not make the same mistakes on another. cheers!
Mars sould be terraformed but there is a problem there is no more magnetic field protecting mars and when it shut around 4 billion years ago the solar wind blow off the atmosphere of mars and its gravity is not enough strong to keep a ticker atmosphere so i dont think that mars is viable to terraform ...sadly .... i wish venus have change place with mars 4 billion years ago ..no green house effect same gravity and mass as earth and maybe have evolve like it :( (sorry for my english)
I think more people would watch these videos if there was some sort of scientific talking in the backround explaining the planet or some other thing to say.
I rather not, but I think more people would watch if they had a better music producer for theese videos, cause this just destroys the experiense.. mute ftw.

I may be ignorant here but why couldn't they reach Mars? That was a danger on the moon so why wouldn't Mars have it? There is no ozone.
