@TheJomogogo He stepped down for a while, but came back. He can be compared to Valdimir Putin. Dmitry Medvedev is the president of Russia, but Putin controls Russia.
@TheJomogogo To say Mao killed people is inaccurate. Governement policies combined with natural disasters killed 20-30 million during the Great Leap Forward, a very unfortunate event that Mao apologized profusely for and gave up power for about ten years afterward. The Cultural Revolution, again, was Mao serving as the "single spark lighting a prairie fire", not Mao ordering this or that., His control over the two events that killed people during his reign was minimal at best.
@PhatFarm60 Hardly. Stalin was a Megalomaniac, a paranoid dictator to whom the people meant nothing. While Mao was only democratically elected once (in 1949), he cared deeply about the people and the cause of the revolution. He took it too far, certainly, to the point where people died because of a combination of unfortunate factors. (primarily local officials lying to the central gov't about famine and encouraging them to ship more grain to the cities while the countryside had none)
wow its interesting how people always talk about how communism killed millions of people when technically theres never been a commmunist society ever.people need to understand it was all socialism, state capitalism fascism etc.also CAPITALISM HAS KILLED MORE PEOPLE it holds the record mainly cause of its cleansing of the native americans.wow an entire peoples murdered all in the name of greed, privateproperty, freedom, exploitation etc.wow you capitalist.i choose liberty over freedom any day
@jpop31 Yes and Lenin set russia to free and hitler made germany strong.Never mind that millions died in proccess. That was just an accident.Or maybe it was a imperialist conspiracy that caused these millions to die :P Pol poth didnt kill anyone, americans secretly sneaked into cambodia and did all the killings without the full knowledge of pol poth.
@generalsubutai In your logic i can claim that Hitler saved lives to by making Germany strong again. The war was entirely conspired by allies and soviets and Germany was simply forced to enter the war they can not win.Jews congress declared war on Germany in 1933.

Mao was a monster, one of the greatest of modern times. He held on to power through fear and brainwashing. His "New Democracy" politcal theroies led to China's downfall into starvation, and economic ruin. The cultural revolution was the last nail in the coffin; the proud and diverse cultural heritage and traditions of the Chinese people and of Tibet/Mongolia and other regions were destroyed(some too priceless to replace or reclaim). No ignorant person can tell me otherwise, he was horrible.
Pre- mao atleast one province in china suffered from a famine every single year since we've been recordin that kindov information, under mao there where two famines, on of which is grosely over exagerated. The pre mao life expectancy in china, 35 after mao 60, literacy rate was in the thirties after mao in the 80's. o yeah and if you don't know what foot binding is, its because mao did away with that barborous tradition.
Don't even start with "Mao improved life for the average Chinese peasant" nonsense. He sent the entire country into chaos, destroyed centuries of tradition and culture. Doing away with superstition and abuse of women as an accuse to protect his name is completely unrelated to the fact that he was more backward in his ideology then his so called enemies. He wanted to be worshipped like a demi-god. Life expectancy?, 25-30 million people died of starvation during "the great leap forward"
Many scholars place deaths under Mao to be higher than any leader in the 20th century. I know you'll lecture me about pre-revolutionary China... but the simple fact is one form of slavery isn't greater then another. Infact, all the damage he did to China's already turbulent history did far more damage then good.
It's like my comparing pre-Soviet Russia ro post Soviet Russia, neither form of government was positive and both victimized the people in the end.
the only "scholars" who still have thier death toll so high for the great leap forward are generally anti-Maoist and are simp;y trying to advance thier own point of view, for example Jade Chung puts the death toll at 70 million in her book Mao the untrue story. read Mobo Gao, "the battle for china past" it shows how population fluctuation in certain provinces were manipulated to get the highest death tolls possible.
@RedStarOverFlorida So you think historians have some kind of agenda? That's like when the reactionaries say the American media is liberal-biased, even though their corporations own the media and the media is too worthless to be biased anyway.
Learn your facts. The 30 million was divided between the executions of the early 50's, the the famine caused by the Great Leap Forward, and the deaths caused by the Cultural Revolution. The famine was most certainly not intentional; the Great Leap Forward was his attempt to jump straight to communism skipping socialism. It's failure caused him to lose power and he did not regain it until 1966. He actually encouraged women to have large families and increased the population.
Over the course of his rule Mao raised the life expectancy of his people by over 20 years, increased literacy rate from 20% to 70%, enormously improved the equality of the sexes, and advanced China's industrialization. This far eclipses the 30 million who died because of him; and frankly, violence and death is an inevitable part of any real revolution.
Put stalin and mao together, and you've got 2 guys responsible for the death of 155.000.000 of their own people, they invented gulag's to get rid of every opponent. Wanna hear more??
Yes, Mao was a wise men. Mao is the greatest... he led the cultural revolution.. He did many great things to China. He abolished slavery, he abolished western imperial pigs, He gave pride to all 56 ethnic groups in China. As a farm boy to a great leader, he was a great man.
@niamtxiv Yes, very great indeed, very greatly evil. Did you know that during the 1950's and 1960's, for one example, the Hui Muslim ethnic group was forced to raise swine and have pig styes in their villages?
A great offence to any Muslim. The 'Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution' was a big and terrible mistake, failure.
Even the M-L in the Soviet Union condemned the crazyness of your so called hero.
@sjolinpeter The Soviets were not really involved in China. The Soviets relinquished control of their spheres of influence after Mao took over. Port Arthur was given back to the CCP after WWII. Mao also retook several disputed territories that he claimed had been a part of the Qing Dynasty in Manchuria. Mao also convinced the Soviets to give part of the Trans-Siberian Railroad to China. The Soviets just wanted to establish good relations with the CCP. However, by 1962, about 20 years after WWII,
@sjolinpeter the Sino-Soviet split occured when China became more and more bold and challenged Soviet authority. The Soviets never really had that much influence in China. Mostly, they just sent advisors and military equipment to aid the CCP in the early years of the Chinese Republic.
