also you say "assault weapon ban" the military defines an "assault rifle as a SELECT fire rifle utilizing mid calibur rifle amunition" that is the MILITARY definition of an assault rifle. where "select" fire means its capable of switching from semi auto to full auto at the flip of a switch. and those weapons are effectively already banned from civilian use. so an AR-15 would not be an assault rifle because it is not capable of shooting full auto

But on what are you judging that statement? The US only has .04 murders per 1000 people, most of which take place in the cities without guns. Even Canada is only at .014 per 1000 so I'm not seeing a pandemic of gun violence. Places like Columbia and Africa where the rates are .6 and .4 are bad. Very few countries have murder rates lower than the states with well armed US citizens, rivalling even Canada in places like Toronto and Quebec where gun ownership is almost nil.

In summation I posit that responsible citizens are responsible enough to own firearms, where as the significantly lower number of irresponsible citizens are not and are easily kept in check by both the law, and armed citizens. In addition, an armed citizenry is a preventative measure for tyranny, without a substantial risk of revolution there is no discouragement to tyranny. Tyrants aren't always foreign, remember, the Germans voted Hitler into office where he quickly took the peoples guns.
