Third crazy playoff year in row for Western Conf. Top 4 teams lost in 1st round, #5 & #7 teams lost in 2nd round, & #6 team lost in Conf Final. So, teams with home-ice lost 6 out of 7 series in West. Third year in row that team from Eastern Conf won Game 7s in both Conf Final and Cup Final. Canes got best of all worlds by getting home-ice when Buff beat Ott in 2nd round & Sabres got hit with all those injuries. Just enough for Rod & his crew of lucky bastards to take Cup. Only kidding, Canes.
@oilersandguitars Not really. After looking at the roster from '06 when the Canes won, I see that apart from Staal and Ward, the only other player from that Cup-winning team is Chad LaRose. That's only three players. Of course Staal and Ward were and are two of our best players, and Chad Larose is decent, but I think I can objectively say that the Canes are a very different team now. So are the Oilers; I think you guys could be pretty good in a season or two with guys like Nugent-Hopkins.
@ckendall67 Look dude, I'm a huge 'Canes fan, but I don't bash fans of the franchise. I'm happy that we have a team in Carolina, but show some respect for the history of the franchise and for the fans who had their team taken away from them. The Whalers didn't win the Cup, but their fans have the right to be proud of the franchise as well. If you want to be dismissive of the Whalers for never winning a Cup, you should be dismissive of Canes greats like Ron Francis for never winning a Cup.
@CoandCaSSTB Yeah, the current can't compare at all to the '06 team. We've got a couple of stars (Skinner, Staal, Ward), and some promising young defensemen (Faulk, McBain). Hopefully Muller can turn this team around, but Rutherford needs to go out and get us a couple more legitimate top-6 caliber guys before we have much chance of getting back into the postseason. Also, weren't we were the 2nd seed in the East in '06, not 3rd?
@xXLightningFan9864Xx Sure, the Canes were fortunate that Roloson got hurt, but you seriously can't go putting an asterisk next to their Cup victory just because of that. The Canes were a great team that year, and injuries are a poor excuse for losing. The Canes had the deeper team in the end; we'd been playing our backup (Ward) since Game 3 of the first round against the Habs due to Martin Gerber's poor play.
i'm a huge hurricanes fan, but when you compare the roster from 06 to today, the difference in depth is amazing. Brind'amour, Recchi, Cullen, Weight, Williams, Cole, Wallin. etc. the 06 canes were a championship level team... and its unfortunately going to be a while before they get to that level again.
the hurricanes deserved to be there. and deserved to win. 3rd in the east during that post season (same as boston, who won this year). and were first in the league at more than one point, if i'm not mistaken, during the regular season too. Everyone played with class. It was a clean win and a deserving one.
I know exactly how the old Whalers fans feel. I am a Browns fan. Our franchise was stolen (Modell was offered to be a part of the gateway project, but refused) in 1995 he moved the team to Baltimore and in 2001(i think ) they won the superbowl and we have done absolutely nothing since coming back in 1999. I offer most gracious condolences to those Hartford fans (from someone who has been there) and if it makes any difference, I had the most fun of my entire life watching them win that cup
@niosa5 Once again, the Hartford Whalers and Carolina Hurricanes are two completely different teams. The Canes have sucked since 1997 when they moved to NC? 3 Division titles, 2 conference titles, and a cup in 14 years is not sucking my friend. Also, it looks like we took out a "great hockey team" when the STANLEY friggin CUP was on the line, didn't we? GO CAROLINA HURRICANES!
@niosa5 I love how you've lost the argument, and now you're resulting to talking about how other teams whooped our asses while I made it painfully obvious we destroyed your team in season play. Go Canes! 2006 Stanley Cup Champions.
@niosa5 First of all... the Canes have only been around for 14 years. The Hartford Whalers were a different team and a different franchise. The Oilers have been around for 30 something years. You tell me who had more time to win multiple championships. Sucking since 2006? Last time I recalled, the Canes have either missed the playoffs by a slim margin or made deep championship runs (2008 2009). Meanwhile, the Oilers have been BOTTOM feeders. Scoreboard. Who won the cup? Go Canes!
@niosa5 Nice spelling of the Hurricanes there. Oh, you're an Oilers fan? Haha you guys have been like the last place team since then. We won the cup. We're the better team. End of story. GO CANES!
the horn went off at 0:04 seconds left in the game. (or at 7:09 on youtube) I wish the Oilers won this one... ah well we'll be back. Oilers still got 5 vs 1 cup. Go Oilers!
@RandomActsCorp The Hurricanes weren't even around to win that many cups! And before you say they were the Hartford Whalers... different team, different franchise.
That was an awesome game, from Cam Wards countless amazing saves, the RBC center rocking the roof off or the utter victory felt by Canes nation when Brindy lifted the cup. That was magic.
Yes, I was at that game. The noise was absolutely deafening. And when Williams broke away for the empty net goal, I thought the arena was gonna collapse. It was a "religious" experience.
Sorry folks, but these are NOT the Hartford Whalers, the Whalers never did ANYTHING to deserve any credit, but since moving to Raleigh, the franchise has had more success. Can't you folks just accept that for once?
@ckendall67 Raleigh has become the most successful non traditional market in all of hockey, and people just can't accept that especially when they're waiting for their northern city's first cup.... GO CANES!
@wtighe02 Notice in the description how I don't go without mentioning the Whalers. Also notice how when I put this together I omitted Bettman's "shpeal" about how the move to Raleigh worked.
@Railfan2103 I wish Bettman would just skip the speeches and just hand out the cup. You would think he'd wanna get that done as quick as possible so he doesn't have to get booed for too long.
I was so sad that Edmonton lost after the season they had. They were the comeback kids that year. If Rollie the Goalie hadn't gotten injured they would have had it.
