  • I just wanted to thank you... I had never played this game before and I just tried it... and it is soooo fun!! and very challenging lol. For sure I am not using a code, even dough I dont have time I will finish it eventually... or die a lot. AWESOME REVIEW... a fan from Chile :)

  • i remember been a little disappointed for the nes version didn´t have the awesome arcade ost of this game....it is not bad at all i must say...

  • SHE LIVES IN GTA IV LAND

  • POPPYCOCK! i have finished Contra (or probotector for me cos im british :P) thousands of times and NEVER without the konami code (i got close though, up the beginning of level 7 i think). Its acceptable for Konami 8 and 16 bit games because they are so hard and stupidly unforgiving in places.

oh yeah and you're awesome :D

  • This game has a fantastic soundtrack and sound effects. The lag is actually somewhat beneficial. It acts as a sort of inintended bullettime. The perspective sets it apart from all other SHMUP style games. The boss battles are at least as memorable as those from later SHMUP games like Sub-Terrania, Gradius III, or Einhander (each of which brought their own innovations to the genre).

  • I think you play games to have fun, so if you want to use codes or cheats that's what is fun for you. If you like challenge that's great too.

  • I always play through the game once blindly before really going into it. No cheats, no strategy guide. No GameFaqs. My first file usually sucks butt.

  • what irks me is when i see reviewers doing games using a game genie.... it's one thing if it was programmed into the game, quite another if it's a complete override.

  • looks better than ZANAC That Game SU... its ok

  • Hehe, I love Gyruss too. I once played an Atari version and I'd try to perfect the bonus stages.

  • The beginning reminds me somewhat of charlie the unicorn...

  • It's strange that Z never played an similar game; i saw this design at was instantly thinking "oh, it plays like tempest... cool!". well, you aren't as restricted on the places in the circle to place your ship, but this inward, escape point design is the same...

Oh, first letter had even tempest mentioned *gg*

  • I plqyed Gyruss a lot and never got to stage 19... never thought about a code.

Interesting side note on codes: Certain games (e.g. Vectorman for Genesis) would throw a little tease at you. When you use the code and beat the game it says "Congratulations. Now play without cheating!"

  • @kennedy5414 here's a double fuck you because I'M A FUCKING DUDE

  • 6:48 sounds wrong when taken out of context. Lol.

  • dork

  • This game was one of my ultimate obsessions before the 16-bit era. Unique for a SHMUP. Epic soundtrack is epic. This game was sp0ofed in 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' as 'They Came from Uranus'. Nothing wrong with using the code. Clever how they used a variation of the Konami code that was inverted. I always felt a sense of accomplishment when I beat Gyruss. And I love floating brain bosses!

  • @ironeli101 Wow, what a clever thing to say. What a clever girl you are!

  • oh my god youre real? a girl talking about NES wooooooooow

  • get a life

  • tempest

  • this game has alot of the same sound effects that are in the NES teenage mutant ninja turtles IV the arcade game

  • @GAMESofthe90S tmnt 4 is on snes

  • @zeldamaster52

    also on NES

  • This and Time Pilot were the last games Yoshiki Okamoto created for Konami before he got fired and moved to Capcom to create some games for them, most notably the Final Fight and Street Fighter franchises.

  • i still have this game, and plenty others for my nes!! the only thing is i don't have the front load version, i have the top load version which, i think, is a little bit better!!

  • im not a gamer but i wouldnt use codes its gives ppl the easy way out

  • back in the time of the nes and sega systems, it was always always about "The Code" especially konami games!! up down up down left right left right B A select start!! I love that code!!

  • You mean up up down down left right left right B A Start?

  • No, i don't mean that!! i know what i'm talking about!!

  • Agreed Pluto is a planet. Screw the people who say it is not.

  • Pluto's a dog not a planet...Kidding anyway yeah Pluto is a planet screw people saying it's a dwarf moon or whatever.

  • i'm not that great at games so i could never get much further than l13 or l14, but I was always playing the coin-op version. Never saw the Nintendo version until this vid.

Fire up mame and check out the coin op version and you will be HOOKED!

  • i use codes AFTER best effort attempts and BEFORE reaching for anxiolytics.

  • i like you're megaman lego head

  • tempest moves in a circular motion like gyruss

and cheating shud only be used after playing the game many times without, and never in multiplayer

  • The only games I used a code on were GTA and Pokemon Red, but, that was long after I beat them many times. I mainly did it because I wanted to see what it looked like.

  • It's been about 20 years or so, but I owned this game on the Atari 2600. I don't think I ever played the NES version, however.

  • pluto will always be a planet. those scientists can kill themselves

  • Also, we should do Youtube Poops based on Little Miss Gamer (hopefully Z won't mind us doing some).

  • A game should be fun before anything else. Sometimes a code helps the game be fun again when it gets too frustrating so I don't mind when there are codes used. You're still enjoying the game, you're just enjoying it differently. So if you have time then do it without the code but yeah... your friend has a good point about there just not being enough time to do that as compared to when we were all kids.

  • A note on fear...

Some people get a rush when they get terrified... I know a few people who acyually LOOK for screamers just for a cheap thrill. I love a good zombie horror game myself, but sometimes it's just too grotesque...

  • Well,I think Gyruss is Virtual Console now.

  • OMG! SEVERBOT HEAD IN BACKROUNFD

  • actually gyruss reminds me a lot of tempest. Ironic that it was mentioned in the video

  • 11:19 they look like miney unacrons

  • little miss gamer should have her own account....on youtube...

  • I think that you should only use a code when you're really desperate (like how I use the Konami code 4 Contra)

BTW love that Servbot cap in the background :P

  • Cheating without playing the game through makes it less enjoyable. Thats what I learned about with some of my older games, so recently i've been replaying them without codes because the tiredness factor has worn off.

  • thanx for the scientific explanation about neptune being farther away from the sun than pluto

  • Gosh, she's so adorable. Totally jealous that she's married.

  • How did you know that she is married where did you find that out!!

  • I saw it on another of her videos.

The fact that she enjoys StarTropics and is a retro gamer is enough to make me wish I were married to her. Sigh...

  • Burger Time freaked me out too as a kid! I still don't know why. I think I just don't like being chased, because Lode Runner freaked me out as well. I always thought the enemies were pale guys with really deep creepy eyes sunken into their heads, as oppose to just being guys with helmets on.

  • I say you should only cheat after you've either beaten the game once or gotten as far as you possibly can, like you and stage 19.

  • ^_^; Oh my! Are... I mean, do you have a boyfriend? I think gamer girls are the biggest turn on ^_^;

  • She's married.

  • Epic burn.

  • Flirting nerds! Does it get any more disgusting!?

  • @AGrayPhantom lolz There are a lot of gamer girls where I live, me included XD

  • @AGrayPhantom I hope to god this guy was kidding.

  • @werebee Why?

  • @AGrayPhantom Mainly the smiley faces.

  • @werebee Hm? I'm totally 100% serious. I mean, I didn't really believe she'd reply, but yeah, she's my type.

  • I laugh out loud at every video you post....in a good way.

  • another great viideo Z. I agree with the idea of using codes to make an old game seem new, I think of codes as a way to extend the fun. I remember I couldn't get past Mike Tyson in Punch-out and my friend came over and put in a code, and next thing I knew that punk had gotten farther than me and he had never played it before.

    Keep up the great work.

  • Yeah well Double Dragon 3 has that problem where when there's too much stuff on screen, the characters start blinking a bit.

  • That isn't Gyruss, it's some sort of mutated Gyruss offspring. The true Gyruss doesn't have bosses.

  • Well it was common for NES games to change their arcade counterparts. Tecmo completely flipped Rygar and Ninja Gaiden upside-down when they came to the NES.

  • I was wondering what was hard about Level 19 until I saw it.

Good god.... those arms. I should get it and play it.

  • i wish i had a game genie im stuck on a level of the american versoin of super mario bros. 2 and im on the last level

  • Use peach, and just dance around , throwing his turnips back at him

  • when I was a kid, I used codes for wacraft 2, my father and uncle would really bother me a lot because of it, then I just thought it out for myself, cheating takes the fun out of it :\ also it takes away any bragging rights xD. I never ever cheated again ^^

  • I only use codes when i'm frustrated.

  • I scored 2,243,250 points on this game. Awesome video!

  • I've never played this version of Gyruss. The graphics look a little different than the arcade - almost updated. The ship looks cool. :)

I have nothing against codes, but I do agree that you should play it without the code first.

  • Nice to see that some people aren't all like "OMG YOU USE A CHEAT COED YOU SUXXORS PLAY ZA GAME PROPERLYYYYY!"

  • Codes arent that bad.

  • So, did you beat it?

  • I have absolutely nothing against codes, cheats etc. unless you're playing competitively or use them to gain an unfair advantage over other people e.g. in multiplayer games.

After all games are about fun and you as the customers decide what fun means to you. One gamer will find it enjoyable to play his or her ass off to master a game, another one will want to see as much of a given game in as little time as possible - you decide. =)

  • Gyruss was first released in arcades in 1983.

  • Little Miss Gamer, I heard that you mentioned the NES game Nightshade in one of your videos. Which one was it?

  • She didn't actually, HVGN just mentioned her because she reviews good games as opposed to most angry reviewers.

  • Oh..

  • Still, I don't think that she'd review it since I guess that she hasn't played much of Nightshade (if she's even heard of it).

  • use teh coed...

  • Codes are needed some times. Terminator 2 for Sega Genesis has a bug where you can't I REPEAT CAN'T beat the truck level. No matter how much you protect the truck about 3/4ths of the way through it will just explode for no reason. You can look it up, it's a known bug, Game Genie is the only way to skip that level and see the rest of what would be an awesome game.

  • Any idea if the code works on the Xbox Live version?

  • Well my opinion on codes is a game is as fun as you make it. I don't really use codes at all except in Grand Theft Auto games because it makes the games for myself way more enjoyable. Also as for a scary game I would say the Silent Hill series is freaky. I really enjoy Resident Evil 4 and don't find it scary at all but Silent Hill games freak me out.

  • i use cheats all the time, but only cheats that make a game more enjoiable, like the mortal kombat blood kode and the metroid justin baily code, not stuff like the zelda 2nd quest cod that gets you further in the game.

  • first part was funny

  • i love this nostalgic video game shit

  • cheat if you want to. some people are not good at games and some don't have time to play them so whatever it shouldn't be a big deal.

  • You are right. Using cheats is ok. Life is more then getting through a game. Play for fun not for challenge!

  • some like both, cant stipulate why folks play games..

  • Around 11:04 you said that you hope this game is released on the Wii's Virtual Console in order for people to experience the game without the lags. I'm sorry to say that the games on the Virtual Console, although emulated, try to stay as close to the original version as possible and I believe this includes the lags and the disappearing sprites when too much stuff is on the screen. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • i do believe this game is on the gba on the konami classics collection

  • little miss gamer, u r so sweet, i really hope i get a gf as fun and cute as u 1 day, lol :)

  • dude you went all emo and shiz. calm down, and be polite, guys like u end up making girls like her disappear.. quickly.

  • I wish there was a code I could punch into my computer that makes Z's top magically disappear

  • it did

  • The Stage 19 boss looks exactly like the enemies from Stage 5 of Gradius.

  • It also looks like the first boss from Life Force.

  • She drops an s-bomb at 7:12

  • Little miss gamer, you NEED to have your own channel.. I couldnt care less about PBC productions, just you!

  • Yeah, clever comments like these are sure to make Z happy. :|

  • ^

    Fuck YEAH Captain S!

  • @TheDarkSiNs what did you say

  • Metroid next!

  • i cant wait till this comes out for vc, can some one tell me if this it out yet for vc

  • I would recomend codes if your a noob or you dont want to get blisters on your thumbs

  • you should get a turbo controller so you dont have to tap the buttons

  • Zombies? Resident Evil 4?

    What?

  • I love your show ^^ Keep up the awesome work

  • I got Gyruss on C64...

One of the best space game ever, with an awesome soundtrack!

    Arcade version is great too.

  • I'd find a copy if my NES worked...

  • That was sweet how she ended it with the game over tune of the game. I remember renting Gyruss when I was like about 12years old I got far on it cause I was really good but couldn't beat it though.

  • Erhm... Tempest?

  • Wow, she's cute.

  • Definitely going to find a copy of Gyruss, now. I love a challenge on my nintendo. Great review.

  • loook a server bot head thing !!

  • USE THE CODE!!!

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

nice preview at the beginning... XD LOL ;P

  • i thought that they had given up on captain s!

sweet i didnt know they were actually making season 2!

  • hehe Uranus

  • The viewer's letters section was a really nice touch, but the main feature just went way too slow.

  • Watching the girl is like watching what you thought girls would be like back when you were four years old in the eighties and everything you knew about girls you saw on children's programming on television. It's retro, without being retro, because it never existed except in your mind.

Girls in the eighties were totally cooler, as this video shows.

  • Even a Virtual Console re-release won't fix the game's slowdown unfortunately.

  • Still, I would buy this version on the Virtual Console if it's released, because it's a bit different from the arcade version that I have on Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advance for Game Boy Advance.

  • I actually saw this game at an old game store... for Atari and Colecovision! No joke. I was tempted to buy, but each ran like 25$!

  • I agree with you, I don't use cheats, but I kinda see that... LMG played the game for over 5 years... normally people can beat a game very fast, max 6 months, but 5 years?

Her friend that just started playing the game and instantly uses the code... or the guy who send the email in the Star Tropics review about DMC3. I guess they got it wrong and didnt even give it a try! That's bad

Butt little miss gamer tried and tried and tried, I'd let her use it

  • Yeah really. Anyone who can't beat Contra without cheating is a total wuss and I have no respect for them. In fact, we should probably just round them all up and kill them. Seriously, who needs to cheat to beat such an easy game? Only a loser.

P.S. I am being sarcastic and you, sir, are an idiot.

  • I have it XBOX Live. Its one of my favorite games of all time.

  • use codes i don`t even care

  • I say if it's built into the game, go for it if you need it! But I stop at using cheat devices, best enjoy the game on it's own merits, Contra code or not.

  • Her voice reminds me of Shyna Nera Shyna from Silhouette Mirage.

  • Im wondering what was that White nintendo cartridge in the opening credits?

  • There's a gold Zelda cart there, the rest are Nintendo Gray.

  • You've never played Tempest? I find that hard to believe. That was probably the first game were you moved rotating around the screen.

  • "Where can I find a woman like that."

She is not only adorable, she does great

game vids. A male gamers dream girl no

doubt! That voice is just way cute.

I think see needs to do voice overs in

some of those Cartoon Network japan deals.

  • Maybe she's Jackie Powers.

  • i like the looong reviews, very personal and informative. fun to see a female perspective on gaming. I hope you keep the reviews coming!

  • You ... wouln't happen to be doing voice work for R5 central by any chance?

  • YOU ROCK

  • awesome game. Cant screw attack help funding with Captain S?

  • Tempest was one of the first games that play like that. Tempest is par with Missile Command.

  • wow, this game is like Tron but super improved

  • Cool, I always thought Gyruss was underrated especially the NES version.

  • Alright, she's going to review Boogerman!!!

  • good graphics for a nes game

  • kirby kicked ass

  • Oh man, Z I can't believe you didn't mention that Flushing Meadows was featured in the climax of the movie Men in Black!

  • I never played Gyruss, but I'll pick it up next time I'm at the used game store.

  • Well it was good for it's time..but Gradius became better..as did R-Types...and that one SNK shooter on the GBA/Arcade. Then there was R-Type Final which was pretty sweet..much better then Gradius V.

  • well for one, I did not hear of this game. Was it for nintendo? I missed where you said what console is it for. ALso rez 4 you should have someone do a review of it because I love that game, and I can see why you would get freaked out at it because I jump fromt ime to time and love the feeling. Also I do remeber being around when they said pluto became a plant and now they say its not? I think they need to make up thers minds.

  • My brother-in-law and I were crazy over Gyruss. I downloaded it on Xbox Live the instant it was available, but alas, it's the arcade version, which is good, but I haven't seen any bosses and only a few enemy types :(

I'm watching for a VC release, I would like very much to play this again.

  • Gyruss huh? I think I missed this one... and since it´s a typical space-shooting game, I really want to test this one! So.. yes.. good idea... I´ll test this and see what it might bring. Great review btw. =)

  • She is soooo nice. :-)

  • Awesome

  • Gyruss is fun. Yes I'm an abuser of "The code". Hell I use it in Contra. I'm the type of gamer who's easily frustrated, so whatever. But I guess codes programed into the game is ok, but Gamesharks and Action replays are for wussies!

Good show! You're still adorable! ;)

  • Probably at the time it was made Neptune was further than Pluto.

  • Oh wait, I just saw that. Next time I should watch the whole video before I post.

  • But you know pluto isnt a planet
