I play a Selmer Mk VI with a custom modified 5* Link. I'd put that mouthpiece up with any. Funny, when I play it somehow doesn't come out like when Nick plays. Guess I'll have to buy a Keilwirth… or maybe find out what dimension Mr. Brignola came from and move there. I've been around a while and NOBODY comes close to Nick Brignola on Bari.
wow. what a command of the hard bop idiom. Brignola's got to be the most neglected player of recent decades. He's a giant: so musical, superb tone, and he gets around the big horn like nobody else, Mulligan and Pepper Adams included. Anyone want to venture what his best 2 or 3 CDs are?
Great stuff! My dad's cousin played in Nick Brignola's big band back in the 70s - he was a sax player named Chick Esposito, and he did some arrangements for the group. I'm trying to track down some of those arrangements, so if anyone happens to know any info, I would really appreciate it!
made the switch from alto to bari (well i still play alto in my ska band) and the size is the only bad part. the thing is huge, but it's so much better than alto.
I wish I had his tone. Its perfect, never drops a note, and isn't fuzzy about anything. All the jumps he does come out clean, and I can't say enough for what he's doen for the instrument. He'll be sorely missed.
Nick is one of the few bari players that I've seen that plays the black Selmer. Gives new meaning to "heavy metal". I know, because his is a twin to my big bad ax. Gotta love the tone and this guys musical sense. Well worth the listen.
honestly, in my opinion, Nick is the best bari player as far as technique goes. Amazing soloist. Im very jealous of anybody whos been able to see him in concert. May he rest in peace.
My harmony teacher at berklee told me he hardly practiced... after a tour was over he'd put his sax back in the closet and wouldn't pick it up till his next gig.
no way!? Thats awesome! there IS hope for me after all... Well, if I'm good enough to make all state, I must be well on my way to not practicing my way to the top, lol.

Neither do I practise (But I play tenor and soprano, not baritone). I don't even warm up before a gig. I just go straight in to the first set. It feels totally unfamiliar after a month of not playing at all and the fingers are so stiff; but after the first number everything is fine. I've got more interesting things to do than to sit practising.
Anybody that honestly says that they "dont practice" and considers themselves to be a "musician" should be euthanized (put to death for you retards) because you are a waste of life. Being a musician is not something to take lightly, its a lifetime of practicing/self-discipline/torture, its not just fucking around with an instrument in your hands! The people that behave the way you do make a mockery of the work that professional musicians do. So please, do the world a favor and NEVER PLAY AGAIN!!
Such a strong sound. Mulligan is a good bari-saxophonist, but...sorry, Jerry.

I played bass with Nick in the '70's. He was the best. For what it's worth he claimed he never practiced and played a Fibercane 5 reed.

Great player. Never knew he was a doubler though. I'd like to hear him on clarinet and sop sax.
